    A clickable oxysterol photolabel retains NMDA receptor activity and accumulates in neurons

    Oxysterol analogs that modulate NMDA receptor function are candidates for therapeutic development to treat neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the cellular actions of these compounds are still unclear. For instance, how these compounds are compartmentalized or trafficked in neurons is unknown. In this study, we utilized a chemical biology approach combining photolabeling and click chemistry. We introduce a biologically active oxysterol analog that contains: (1) a diazirine group, allowing for the permanent labeling of cellular targets, and (2) an alkyne group, allowing for subsequent in situ visualization using Cu2+ catalyzed cycloaddition of an azide-conjugated fluorophore. The physiological properties of this analog at NMDA receptors resemble those of other oxysterols, including occlusion with other oxysterol-like compounds. Fluorescent imaging reveals that the analog accumulates diffusely in the cytoplasm of neurons through an energy-independent mechanism. Overall, this work introduces a novel chemical biology approach to investigate oxysterol actions and introduces a tool useful for further cell biological and biochemical studies of oxysterols.</p

    Hamiltonians for the Quantum Hall Effect on Spaces with Non-Constant Metrics

    The problem of studying the quantum Hall effect on manifolds with nonconstant metric is addressed. The Hamiltonian on a space with hyperbolic metric is determined, and the spectrum and eigenfunctions are calculated in closed form.     The Hyperfine Spin Splittings In Heavy Quarkonia

    The hyperfine spin splittings in heavy quarkonia are studied using the recently developed renormalization group improved spin-spin potential which is independent of the scale parameter μ\mu. The calculated energy difference between the J/ψJ/\psi and the ηc\eta_c fits the experimental data well, while the predicted energy difference ΔMp\Delta M_p between the center of the gravity of 13P0,1,21^3P_{0,1,2} states and the 11P11^1P_1 state of charmonium has the correct sign but is somewhat larger than the experimental data. This is not surprising since there are several other contributions to ΔMp\Delta M_p, which we discuss, that are of comparable size (1\sim 1 MeV) that should be included, before precise agreement with the data can be expected. The mass differences of the ψηc\psi'-\eta_c', Υ(1S)ηb\Upsilon(1S)-\eta_b, Υ(2S)ηb\Upsilon(2S)-\eta_b', and BcBcB_c^*-B_c are also predicted.Comment: 17 page

    Muon spin relaxation (MuSR) measurements in iron oxy-pnictide systems have revealed: (1) commensurate long-range order in undoped LaOFeAs; (2) Bessel function line shape in La(O0.97F0.03)FeAs which indicates possible incommensurate or stripe magnetism; (3) anomalous weak magnetism existing in superconducting LaOFeP, Ce(O0.84F0.16)FeAs, and Nd(O0.88F0.12)FeAs but absent in superconducting La(O0.92F0.08)FeAs; and (4) scaling of superfluid density and Tc in the Ce, La, and Nd-FeAs superconductors following a nearly linear relationship found in cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures (color

    Micro-Hall Magnetometry Studies of Thermally Assisted and Pure Quantum Tunneling in Single Molecule Magnet Mn12-Acetate

    We have studied the crossover between thermally assisted and pure quantum tunneling in single crystals of high spin (S=10) uniaxial single molecule magnet Mn12-acetate using micro-Hall effect magnetometry. Magnetic hysteresis experiments have been used toinvestigate the energy levels that determine the magnetization reversal as a function of magnetic field and temperature. These experiments demonstrate that the crossover occurs in a narrow (~0.1 K) or broad (~1 K) temperature interval depending on the magnitude and direction of the applied field. For low external fields applied parallel to the easy axis, the energy levels that dominate the tunneling shift abruptly with temperature. In the presence of a transverse field and/or large longitudinal field these energy levels change with temperature more gradually. A comparison of our experimental results with model calculations of this crossover suggest that there are additional mechanisms that enhance the tunneling rate of low lying energy levels and broaden the crossover for small transverse fields.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Clinical and Financial Outcomes Due to Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Surgical Site Infection: A Multi-Center Matched Outcomes Study

    The clinical and financial outcomes of SSIs directly attributable to MRSA and methicillin-resistance are largely uncharacterized. Previously published data have provided conflicting conclusions.We conducted a multi-center matched outcomes study of 659 surgical patients. Patients with SSI due to MRSA were compared with two groups: matched uninfected control patients and patients with SSI due to MSSA. Four outcomes were analyzed for the 90-day period following diagnosis of the SSI: mortality, readmission, duration of hospitalization, and hospital charges. Attributable outcomes were determined by logistic and linear regression.In total, 150 patients with SSI due to MRSA were compared to 231 uninfected controls and 128 patients with SSI due to MSSA. SSI due to MRSA was independently predictive of readmission within 90 days (OR = 35.0, 95% CI 17.3-70.7), death within 90 days (OR = 7.27, 95% CI 2.83-18.7), and led to 23 days (95% CI 19.7-26.3) of additional hospitalization and 61,681(9561,681 (95% 23,352-100,011) of additional charges compared with uninfected controls. Methicillin-resistance was not independently associated with increased mortality (OR = 1.72, 95% CI 0.70-4.20) nor likelihood of readmission (OR = 0.43, 95% CI 0.21-0.89) but was associated with 5.5 days (95% CI 1.97-9.11) of additional hospitalization and 24,113 (95% 4,521-43,704) of additional charges.The attributable impact of S. aureus and methicillin-resistance on outcomes of surgical patients is substantial.     Simple matrix models for random Bergman metrics

    Recently, the authors have proposed a new approach to the theory of random metrics, making an explicit link between probability measures on the space of metrics on a Kahler manifold and random matrix models. We consider simple examples of such models and compute the one and two-point functions of the metric. These geometric correlation functions correspond to new interesting types of matrix model correlators.
