    Design Economic Policies that do not Create Bumpy Recovery

    This chapter studies how to make sure when the economic performance indicators approach some pre-determined target values due to the effect of adopted policies, the economy also develops reasonably well without experiencing much severe up and-down fluctuations. This problem of concern is resolved by addressing the corresponding problem of pole placement of the general control-theory model of the economic system. This chapter (1) discusses conditions under which the poles of a constant coefficient linear economic system can be arbitrarily placed, (2) provides a way to calculate the matrix of feedback gain that is useful in placing the poles by using the feedback control mechanism so that the resultant constant coefficient linear economic system possesses a good quality stability and fast response speed, and (3) investigates the problem of how to design state or output feedbacks (economic policies) so that the resultant closed-loop economic system will have the pre-determined poles. At the end, some open problems of great importance are posed for future research. This chapter relates the issue of economic policy making and the pole placement of the general control-theory model of the economic system. The results are expected to provide practically useful guidelines

    Application of machine learning for risky sexual behavior interventions among factory workers in China

    IntroductionAssessing the likelihood of engaging in high-risk sexual behavior can assist in delivering tailored educational interventions. The objective of this study was to identify the most effective algorithm and assess high-risk sexual behaviors within the last six months through the utilization of machine-learning models.MethodsThe survey conducted in the Longhua District CDC, Shenzhen, involved 2023 participants who were employees of 16 different factories. The data was collected through questionnaires administered between October 2019 and November 2019. We evaluated the model's overall predictive classification performance using the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. All analyses were performed using the open-source Python version 3.9.12.ResultsAbout a quarter of the factory workers had engaged in risky sexual behavior in the past 6 months. Most of them were Han Chinese (84.53%), hukou in foreign provinces (85.12%), or rural areas (83.19%), with junior high school education (55.37%), personal monthly income between RMB3,000 (US417.54)andRMB4,999(US417.54) and RMB4,999 (US695.76; 64.71%), and were workers (80.67%). The random forest model (RF) outperformed all other models in assessing risky sexual behavior in the past 6 months and provided acceptable performance (accuracy 78%; sensitivity 11%; specificity 98%; PPV 63%; ROC 84%).DiscussionMachine learning has aided in evaluating risky sexual behavior within the last six months. Our assessment models can be integrated into government or public health departments to guide sexual health promotion and follow-up services

    Higher systemic immune-inflammation index and systemic inflammation response index levels are associated with stroke prevalence in the asthmatic population: a cross-sectional analysis of the NHANES 1999-2018

    BackgroundSignificant evidence suggests that asthma might originate from low-grade systemic inflammation. Previous studies have established a positive association between the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and the systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) levels and the risk of stroke. However, it remains unclear whether SII, SIRI and the prevalence of stroke are related in individuals with asthma.MethodsThe present cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 1999 and 2018. SII was calculated using the following formula: (platelet count × neutrophil count)/lymphocyte count. SIRI was calculated using the following formula: (neutrophil count × monocyte count)/lymphocyte count. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient was used to determine any correlation between SII, SIRI, and the baseline characteristics. Survey-weighted logistic regression was employed to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to determine the association between SII, SIRI, and stroke prevalence. The predictive value of SII and SIRI for stroke prevalence was assessed through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, with the area under the ROC curve (AUC) being indicative of its predictive value. Additionally, clinical models including SIRI, coronary heart disease, hypertension, age, and poverty income ratio were constructed to evaluate their clinical applicability.ResultsBetween 1999 and 2018, 5,907 NHANES participants with asthma were identified, of which 199 participants experienced a stroke, while the remaining 5,708 participants had not. Spearman rank correlation analysis indicated that neither SII nor SIRI levels exhibited any significant correlation with the baseline characteristics of the participants (r<0.1). ROC curves were used to determine the optimal cut-off values for SII and SIRI levels to classify participants into low- and high-level groups. Higher SII and SIRI levels were associated with a higher prevalence of stroke, with ORs of 1.80 (95% CI, 1.18-2.76) and 2.23 (95% CI, 1.39-3.57), respectively. The predictive value of SIRI (AUC=0.618) for stroke prevalence was superior to that of SII (AUC=0.552). Furthermore, the clinical model demonstrated good predictive value (AUC=0.825), with a sensitivity of 67.1% and specificity of 87.7%.ConclusionIn asthmatics, higher levels of SII and SIRI significantly increased the prevalence of stroke, with its association being more pronounced in individuals with coexisting obesity and hyperlipidaemia. SII and SIRI are relatively stable novel inflammatory markers in the asthmatic population, with SIRI having a better predictive value for stroke prevalence than SII

    Identification of a Novel Marine Fish Virus, Singapore Grouper Iridovirus-Encoded MicroRNAs Expressed in Grouper Cells by Solexa Sequencing

    BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are ubiquitous non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. An increasing number of studies has revealed that viruses can also encode miRNAs, which are proposed to be involved in viral replication and persistence, cell-mediated antiviral immune response, angiogenesis, and cell cycle regulation. Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV) is a pathogenic iridovirus that has severely affected grouper aquaculture in China and Southeast Asia. Comprehensive knowledge about the related miRNAs during SGIV infection is helpful for understanding the infection and the pathogenic mechanisms. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To determine whether SGIV encoded miRNAs during infection, a small RNA library derived from SGIV-infected grouper (GP) cells was constructed and sequenced by Illumina/Solexa deep-sequencing technology. We recovered 6,802,977 usable reads, of which 34,400 represented small RNA sequences encoded by SGIV. Sixteen novel SGIV-encoded miRNAs were identified by a computational pipeline, including a miRNA that shared a similar sequence to herpesvirus miRNA HSV2-miR-H4-5p, which suggests miRNAs are conserved in far related viruses. Generally, these 16 miRNAs are dispersed throughout the SGIV genome, whereas three are located within the ORF057L region. Some SGIV-encoded miRNAs showed marked sequence and length heterogeneity at their 3' and/or 5' end that could modulate their functions. Expression levels and potential biological activities of these viral miRNAs were examined by stem-loop quantitative RT-PCR and luciferase reporter assay, respectively, and 11 of these viral miRNAs were present and functional in SGIV-infected GP cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provided a genome-wide view of miRNA production for iridoviruses and identified 16 novel viral miRNAs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of miRNAs encoded by aquatic animal viruses. The results provide a useful resource for further in-depth studies on SGIV infection and iridovirus pathogenesis

    Transcriptome analysis of orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) spleen in response to Singapore grouper iridovirus

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Orange-spotted grouper (<it>Epinephelus coioides</it>) is an economically important marine fish cultured in China and Southeast Asian countries. The emergence of infectious viral diseases, including iridovirus and betanodavirus, have severely affected food products based on this species, causing heavy economic losses. Limited available information on the genomics of <it>E. coioides </it>has hampered the understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie host-virus interactions. In this study, we used a 454 pyrosequencing method to investigate differentially-expressed genes in the spleen of the <it>E. coioides </it>infected with Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using 454 pyrosequencing, we obtained abundant high-quality ESTs from two spleen-complementary DNA libraries which were constructed from SGIV-infected (V) and PBS-injected fish (used as a control: C). A total of 407,027 and 421,141 ESTs were produced in control and SGIV infected libraries, respectively. Among the assembled ESTs, 9,616 (C) and 10,426 (V) ESTs were successfully matched against known genes in the NCBI non-redundant (nr) database with a cut-off E-value above 10<sup>-5</sup>. Gene ontology (GO) analysis indicated that "cell part", "cellular process" and "binding" represented the largest category. Among the 25 clusters of orthologous group (COG) categories, the cluster for "translation, ribosomal structure and biogenesis" represented the largest group in the control (185 ESTs) and infected (172 ESTs) libraries. Further KEGG analysis revealed that pathways, including cellular metabolism and intracellular immune signaling, existed in the control and infected libraries. Comparative expression analysis indicated that certain genes associated with mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), chemokine, toll-like receptor and RIG-I signaling pathway were alternated in response to SGIV infection. Moreover, changes in the pattern of gene expression were validated by qRT-PCR, including cytokines, cytokine receptors, and transcription factors, apoptosis-associated genes, and interferon related genes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study provided abundant ESTs that could contribute greatly to disclosing novel genes in marine fish. Furthermore, the alterations of predicted gene expression patterns reflected possible responses of these fish to the virus infection. Taken together, our data not only provided new information for identification of novel genes from marine vertebrates, but also shed new light on the understanding of defense mechanisms of marine fish to viral pathogens.</p

    Cooperative Energy Efficient Management Scheme for Multimedia Information Dissemination

    Information centric sensor network is a promising technology for multimedia sensor network due to the enhancement of transmission rate and reduced latency by using caches. Because of the limited energy in each sensor node, energy efficiency problem is crucial to be considered in information centric sensor network. In this paper, we cope with the energy efficient management problem in such network, in which both transmission energy and caching energy are considered. We derive the exact analytical expression for the energy consumption model in such network and propose cooperative energy efficient management scheme for multimedia information dissemination. We carry out extensive performance evaluations and our results show that the energy consumption can be minimized by cooperatively tuning the key parameters such as the cache size and caching probability
