    Strategies for using cellular automata to locate constrained layer damping on vibrating structures

    It is often hard to optimise constrained layer damping (CLD) for structures more complicated than simple beams and plates as its performance depends on its location, the shape of the applied patch, the mode shapes of the structure and the material properties. This paper considers the use of cellular automata (CA) in conjunction with finite element analysis to obtain an efficient coverage of CLD on structures. The effectiveness of several different sets of local rules governing the CA are compared against each other for a structure with known optimum coverage-namely a plate. The algorithm which attempts to replicate most closely known optimal configurations is considered the most successful. This algorithm is then used to generate an efficient CLD treatment that targets several modes of a curved composite panel. To validate the modelling approaches used, results are also presented of a comparison between theoretical and experimentally obtained modal properties of the damped curved panel

    Characterization studies of Silicon Photomultipliers and crystals matrices for a novel time of flight PET detector

    This paper describes the characterization of crystal matrices and silicon photomultiplier arrays for a novel Positron Emission Tomography (PET) detector, namely the external plate of the EndoTOFPET-US system. The EndoTOFPET-US collaboration aims to integrate Time-Of-Flight PET with ultrasound endoscopy in a novel multimodal device, capable to support the development of new biomarkers for prostate and pancreatic tumors. The detector consists in two parts: a PET head mounted on an ultrasound probe and an external PET plate. The challenging goal of 1 mm spatial resolution for the PET image requires a detector with small crystal size, and therefore high channel density: 4096 LYSO crystals individually readout by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) make up the external plate. The quality and properties of these components must be assessed before the assembly. The dark count rate, gain, breakdown voltage and correlated noise of the SiPMs are measured, while the LYSO crystals are evaluated in terms of light yield and energy resolution. In order to effectively reduce the noise in the PET image, high time resolution for the gamma detection is mandatory. The Coincidence Time Resolution (CTR) of all the SiPMs assembled with crystals is measured, and results show a value close to the demanding goal of 200 ps FWHM. The light output is evaluated for every channel for a preliminary detector calibration, showing an average of about 1800 pixels fired on the SiPM for a 511 keV interaction. Finally, the average energy resolution at 511 keV is about 13 %, enough for effective Compton rejection.Comment: 12 pages, 31 figure

    The study of exotic state Zc±(3900)Z_c^{\pm}(3900) decaying to J/ψπ±J/\psi\pi^{\pm} in the pppp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 1.96, 7, and 13 TeV

    A dynamically constrained phase-space coalescence model plus PACIAE model was used to predict the exotic resonant state Zc±(3900)Z_c^{\pm}(3900) yield, transverse momentum distribution, and the rapidity distribution with ∣y∣<6|y| < 6 and pT<10p_T < 10 GeV/c in pppp collisions at s=1.96,7\sqrt{s} = 1.96, 7 and 13 TeV, respectively. The yield of the Zc±(3900)Z_c^{\pm}(3900) is estimated to be around 10−610^{-6} to 10−510^{-5}. We also present the energy dependence of the transverse momentum distributions and rapidity distributions for Zc+(3900){Z_c^{+}(3900)} and Zc−(3900){Z_c^{-}(3900)}. The production of Zc+(3900){Z_c^{+}(3900)} and its anti-particle Zc−(3900){Z_c^{-}(3900)} is found to be quite similar to each other.Comment: 6 pages,5 figure

    Phosphorylation of HOX11/TLX1 on Threonine-247 during mitosis modulates expression of cyclin B1

We previously reported a predisposition to aberrant spindle assembly checkpoint arrest and heightened incidences of chromosome missegregation in HOX11-overexpressing B lymphocytes following exposure to spindle poisons. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate cell cycle specific expression of HOX11. Results Cell cycle specific expression studies revealed a phosphorylated form of HOX11 detectable only in the mitotic fraction of cells after treatment with inhibitors to arrest cells at different stages of the cell cycle. Mutational analyses revealed phosphorylation on threonine-247 (Thr247), a conserved amino acid that defines the HOX11 gene family and is integral for the association with DNA binding elements. The effect of HOX11 phosphorylation on its ability to modulate expression of the downstream target, cyclin B1, was tested. A HOX11 mutant in which Thr247 was substituted with glutamic acid (HOX11 T247E), thereby mimicking a constitutively phosphorylated HOX11 isoform, was unable to bind the cyclin B1 promoter or enhance levels of the cyclin B1 protein. Expression of the wildtype HOX11 was associated with accelerated progression through the G2/M phase of the cell cycle, impaired synchronization in prometaphase and reduced apoptosis whereas expression of the HOX11 T247E mutant restored cell cycle kinetics, the spindle checkpoint and apoptosis. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that the transcriptional activity of HOX11 is regulated by phosphorylation of Thr247 in a cell cycle-specific manner and that this phosphorylation modulates the expression of the target gene, cyclin B1. Since it is likely that Thr247 phosphorylation regulates DNA binding activity to multiple HOX11 target sequences, it is conceivable that phosphorylation functions to regulate the expression of HOX11 target genes involved in the control of the mitotic spindle checkpoint.Published versio

    Earthquake Forecast via Neutrino Tomography

    We discuss the possibility of forecasting earthquakes by means of (anti)neutrino tomography. Antineutrinos emitted from reactors are used as a probe. As the antineutrinos traverse through a region prone to earthquakes, observable variations in the matter effect on the antineutrino oscillation would provide a tomography of the vicinity of the region. In this preliminary work, we adopt a simplified model for the geometrical profile and matter density in a fault zone. We calculate the survival probability of electron antineutrinos for cases without and with an anomalous accumulation of electrons which can be considered as a clear signal of the coming earthquake, at the geological region with a fault zone, and find that the variation may reach as much as 3% for νˉe\bar \nu_e emitted from a reactor. The case for a νe\nu_e beam from a neutrino factory is also investigated, and it is noted that, because of the typically high energy associated with such neutrinos, the oscillation length is too large and the resultant variation is not practically observable. Our conclusion is that with the present reactor facilities and detection techniques, it is still a difficult task to make an earthquake forecast using such a scheme, though it seems to be possible from a theoretical point of view while ignoring some uncertainties. However, with the development of the geology, especially the knowledge about the fault zone, and with the improvement of the detection techniques, etc., there is hope that a medium-term earthquake forecast would be feasible.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    eViper: A Scalable Platform for Untethered Modular Soft Robots

    Soft robots present unique capabilities, but have been limited by the lack of scalable technologies for construction and the complexity of algorithms for efficient control and motion, which depend on soft-body dynamics, high-dimensional actuation patterns, and external/on-board forces. This paper presents scalable methods and platforms to study the impact of weight distribution and actuation patterns on fully untethered modular soft robots. An extendable Vibrating Intelligent Piezo-Electric Robot (eViper), together with an open-source Simulation Framework for Electroactive Robotic Sheet (SFERS) implemented in PyBullet, was developed as a platform to study the sophisticated weight-locomotion interaction. By integrating the power electronics, sensors, actuators, and batteries on-board, the eViper platform enables rapid design iteration and evaluation of different weight distribution and control strategies for the actuator arrays, supporting both physics-based modeling and data-driven modeling via on-board automatic data-acquisition capabilities. We show that SFERS can provide useful guidelines for optimizing the weight distribution and actuation patterns of the eViper to achieve the maximum speed or minimum cost-of-transportation (COT).Comment: 8 pages, 21 figures, accepted by IROS 202
