Metabolomics on integrated circuit
We have demonstrated a chip-based diagnostics tool for the quantification of metabolites, using specific enzymes, to study enzyme kinetics and calculate the Michaelis-Menten constant. An array of 256×256 ion-sensitive field effect transistors (ISFETs) fabricated in a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process is used for this prototype. We have used hexokinase enzyme reaction on the ISFET CMOS chip with glucose concentration in the physiological range of 0.05 mM – 231 mM and successfully studied the enzyme kinetics of hexokinase in detail. This will promote future research towards multiplexing enzyme-based metabolite quantification on a single chip, ultimately opening a pathway towards a personal metabolome machine
Impact of irreversibility and uncertainty on the timing of infrastructure projects
This paper argues that because of the irreversibility and uncertainty associated with Build - Operate - Transfer (BOT) infrastructure projects, their financial evaluation should also routinely include the determination of the value of the option to defer the construction start-up. This ensures that project viability is comprehensively assessed before any revenue or loan guarantees are considered by project sponsors to support the project. This paper shows that the framework can be used even in the context of the intuitive binomial lattice model. This requires estimating volatility directly from the evolution of the net operating income while accounting for the correlation between the revenue and costs functions. This approach ensures that the uncertainties usually associated with toll revenues, in particular, are thoroughly investigated and their impact on project viability is thoroughly assessed. This paper illustrates the usefulness of the framework with data from an actual (BOT) toll road project. The results show that by postponing the project for a couple of years the project turns out to be viable, whereas it was not without the deferral. The evaluation approach proposed therefore provides a better framework for determining when and the extent of government financial support, if any, that may be needed to support a BOT project on the basis of project economics. The analysis may also be applicable to private sector investment projects, which are characterized by irreversibility and a high rate of uncertainty
The politics of contamination [Review of: P. Cheah (2006) Inhuman conditions: on cosmopolitanism and human rights]
Unusual formation and sub-omohyoid course of external jugular vein.
Variations in the origin and termination of external jugular vein are common and are reported in the past. However, variations in the course of external jugular vein are uncommon. During routine dissection classes for medical undergraduates, we came across the unusual formation and course of right external jugular vein and absence of common facial vein, in an approximately 60-year-old male cadaver of Indian origin. External jugular vein was formed by the continuation of undivided trunk of retromandibular vein. Following its formation, it passed vertically superficial to sternocleidomastoid muscle to the lower part of occipital triangle. In the occipital triangle it pierced the investing layer of deep cervical fascia and passed deep to the inferior belly of omohyoid muscle and coursed through the subclavian triangle. Then, it terminated at the junction of subclavian vein with internal jugular vein. Facial vein joined with submental vein and finally drained into internal jugular vein. Further, the posterior auricular vein and anterior jugular veins were absent. Knowledge about the variations of the retromandibular vein, common facial vein and external jugular vein observed in this study, may be important for the surgeons, to prevent inadvertent injury and excessive bleeding during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
Necessary fictions: indigenous claims and the humanity of rights
Indigenous right insistently challenges the surpassing arrogations of sovereign right. In so doing, it affirms dimensions of being-together denied or stunted in sovereign modes of political formation. This force of Indigenous right is amplified here through legal and literary instantiations. These, in turn, uncover the continuously created and fictional quality of rights, revealing them to be necessary fictions
Epidemiology, Diagnosis And Chemoprophylaxis Of Trypanosoma Evansi Infection In Dairy Cattle
Trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma evansi is considered to be one of
the diseases of economic importance affecting dairy cattle in Malaysia. An
investigation into the epidemiology, diagnosis and chemoprophylaxis of T. evansi
infection in these animals was carried out. F our studies were conducted in this
investigation. In the first study, random blood samples were collected from animals of
different age/physiological status for parasitological, serological, haematological and
biochemical tests between August 1995 and July 1996 The mean prevalence was
highest in the lactating animals ( 134 %) followed by those in the dry herd (88%), late
pregnant animals (81%), early pregnant animals (47 %), calves (03 %) and yearlings
(02%) The mean prevalence was significantly different (p<0.05) between cows and
the other groups (calves and yearlings) Among the cows there was significant
difference in the mean prevalence between the early pregnant and lactating animals
(p<0.05) The association between the prevalence in lactating cows and rain days
was significant (p< 0 05) Infected dry cows had a significant decrease in the PCV,
Hb and albumin levels (p< 0 05) The antigen-detection ELISA was a useful
diagnostic tool for detection of T. evansi infections as it was capable of detecting
9 1 % of trypanosome-positive ammal
Effects of Packing Densities in Plastic Bags on Survival of Larvae and Fry of Helostoma temmincki (C&V)
Helostoma temmincki (C&V) larvae measuring 4.6 ± 0.6 mm total length were packed in
plastic bags with oxygen at stocking densities of 0, 250, 500, 1000 and 1500/liter. Fry measuring 2. 0
cm ± 0.2 were similarly packed at densities of 0, 125, 250, 500 and 750/litre. The fish were observed
for mortality 10 minutes, 24 hours and 48 hours after packing. The water quality parameters - temperature,
dissolved oxygen, ammonia-N, dissolved carbon dioxide, pH and alkalinity - were determined
at 0 hours for control bags only and for all bags at 48 hours after packing. There was no mortality
in all bags 10 minutes after packing. After 24 hours, mortality of larvae packed at 500, 1000 and
1500/litre was less than 2% whereas no mortality was observed in the bags with fry. At 48 hours,
mortalities of larvae were similar (P > 0.05) in all bags and were less than 2%. Mortalities of fry
packed at 125, 250 and 500/litre were similar (P> 0.05) and less than 2%, whereas mortality of fry
packed at 750/litre was significantly different (P < 0.05)
