From Ethnographical Subjects to Archaeological Objects: Pierre Loti on Easter Island (Rapa Nui)
In 1872 French sailor Pierre Loti visited the desolate Pacific island of Rapa Nui. Descriptions in his diary and drawings were published and received great public interest. Here were all the ingredients to satisfy nineteenth century ideas of the exotic: remote, tropical, cannibal inhabited, strange rituals and frenzied dancing, and in addition – the ruins of an ancient and unknown civilisation. But Loti had visited the island almost at the end of its occupation by its indigenous people. The large stone statues had not been erect for some time, even though he recorded them as being so, and its population had been decimated. So Loti’s graphic and written descriptions were embellished for his audience, a fact that is almost as interesting as the real fate of Rapa Nui.Fil: Schavelzon Chavin, Daniel Gaston. Terracotta Pipes with Triangular Engravings
The discovery of two smoking pipes from seventeenth-century contexts in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is used to suggest the presence in colonial times of a new set of stylistic norms derived from African traditions that are expressed at a regional scale not only in smoking pipes, but in a variety of items of material culture. These terracotta pipes, recovered at BolÃvar 373 and the Liniers House sites, are characterized by their particular geometric decorative pattern, achieved by engravings and incisions. Similar specimens were found elsewhere inBuenos Aires, as well as in Cayastá (province of Santa Fe,Argentina) and Brazil.Fil: Zorzi, Flavia. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Understanding how different personality models can predict non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors
The current study seeks to examine the role of maladaptive personality traits and personality functioning’s relationship with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) engagement and suicidal behavior. Specifically, this study examined the validity of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) in predicting historical and prospective self-harm behavior in comparison to the Five Factor Model. This study recruited 400 female participants, ages 18-24, who completed a battery of measures about personality functioning, traits, self-harm, and suicidal history. Two weeks after the initial assessment, participants completed a follow-up survey to assess their NSSI behavior over the past two weeks. Through point-biserial correlations, this study found that Criterion A and B of the AMPD were related to self-harm. Through a series of logistic regression analysis, Criterion A and B, together, did not increment the prediction of self-harm or suicide. In respect to this study, AMPD was the best fitting model compared to the FFM in predicting historical NSSI and suicide. In addition, we found that adding Criterion A of the AMPD combined with the FFM traits led to an increase in explained variance of NSSI; yet the AMPD was the best fit model for lifetime prevalence of suicidal behavior. Overall, through the examination of the relation between the AMPD from the FFM in predicting self-harm behavior, this study allows for a more comprehensive understanding of how Personality Functioning and personality traits are related to self-harm behavior

Fil: Schavelzon Chavin, Daniel Gaston.
