    LIMO EEG: A Toolbox for hierarchical LInear MOdeling of ElectroEncephaloGraphic data

    Magnetic- and electric-evoked brain responses have traditionally been analyzed by comparing the peaks or mean amplitudes of signals from selected channels and averaged across trials. More recently, tools have been developed to investigate single trial response variability (e.g., EEGLAB) and to test differences between averaged evoked responses over the entire scalp and time dimensions (e.g., SPM, Fieldtrip). LIMO EEG is a Matlab toolbox (EEGLAB compatible) to analyse evoked responses over all space and time dimensions, while accounting for single trial variability using a simple hierarchical linear modelling of the data. In addition, LIMO EEG provides robust parametric tests, therefore providing a new and complementary tool in the analysis of neural evoked responses

    HIV/AIDS prevalence among South African health workers

    Introduction. Studies on HIV prevalence among health workers usually focus on occupational exposure to HIV. Little is known about HIV prevalence in this group. However, it is expected that HIV prevalence among health workers will reflect prevalence in their society. Objective. To determine HIV prevalence among South African health workers. Method. A stratified cluster sample was drawn of 5% of health facilities in South Africa (N = 222) representative of the public and private health sectors in South Africa. The sample was designed to obtain a nationwide representative sample of medical professionals and non-professional health workers. A subsample comprising health workers in four provinces was tested for HIV status. The Orasure HIV-1 device in combination with the Vironostika HIV UNI-Form II plus O enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits were used to collect oral fluid specimens for HIV testing. Results. Based on a sample of 721 health workers and a response rate of 82.5% (or 595 respondents), the study found that an estimated 15.7% (95% confidence interval (CI): 12.2 - 19.9%) of health workers employed in the public and private health facilities located in four South African provinces, were living with HIV/AIDS in 2002. Among younger health workers, the risk is much higher. This group (aged 18 - 35 years) had an estimated HIV prevalence of 20% (95% CI: 14.1 - 27.6%). Non-professionals had an HIV prevalence of 20.3%, while professionals had a prevalence of 13.7%. Conclusion. HIV prevalence among health workers in South Africa is high; this calls for the introduction of antiretroviral programmes targeting them. In addition, there is a need for the development of new policy regarding placement of infected health workers in tuberculosis (TB) wards, coupled with vigorous human resource planning to replace the health workers likely to die from AIDS.     Analysis of Clean Transition Metal Surfaces by Core Level Spectroscopy

    The shifts in the binding energy of core electrons detected by high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are a very sensitive probe of the chemical bonding of the excited atom. Since the surface atoms have their geometrical environment perturbed, their core levels are shifted from their bulk positions. A very large number of experiments have been performed on the 4f core level positions of tantalum and tungsten for various orientations of the surface plane. Systematic trends have been put forward and explained by theoretical models. Furthermore, the analysis of the angular variation of the core level line intensities gives structural information when compared with theoretical calculations. In the case of W(100) a single scattering theory is sufficient to reproduce experimental data. Finally we show that, in some particular cases, the core level lineshapes may differ strongly from a Doniach Sunjic model. The temperature dependence of their widths due to core hole-phonon coupling can be reproduced within the independent boson theory

    In situ relationships between microbiota and potential pathobiota in Arabidopsis thaliana.

    A current challenge in microbial pathogenesis is to identify biological control agents that may prevent and/or limit host invasion by microbial pathogens. In natura, hosts are often infected by multiple pathogens. However, most of the current studies have been performed under laboratory controlled conditions and by taking into account the interaction between a single commensal species and a single pathogenic species. The next step is therefore to explore the relationships between host-microbial communities (microbiota) and microbial members with potential pathogenic behavior (pathobiota) in a realistic ecological context. In the present study, we investigated such relationships within root-associated and leaf-associated bacterial communities of 163 ecologically contrasted Arabidopsis thaliana populations sampled across two seasons in southwest of France. In agreement with the theory of the invasion paradox, we observed a significant humped-back relationship between microbiota and pathobiota α-diversity that was robust between both seasons and plant organs. In most populations, we also observed a strong dynamics of microbiota composition between seasons. Accordingly, the potential pathobiota composition was explained by combinations of season-specific microbiota operational taxonomic units. This result suggests that the potential biomarkers controlling pathogen\u27s invasion are highly dynamic
