This report describes a systematic dog survey program that was performed by Humane Society International (HSI) in Haryana state, India, in June and October 2014. This survey was conducted in support of the National Rabies Control (NRC) program, with its primary goals being to: (1) Collect baseline data prior to initiation of a program of humane dog population management (DPM) and rabies control, (2) Establish a standardized survey framework for future monitoring of DPM program impact, and (3) Generate a population size estimate for street dogs to assist in strategic and logistic planning for the DPM and NRC programs in Haryana. Data collection activities occurred during two periods. The first was initiated in early June, 2014, continuing until the onset of monsoon season in late June. Data collection resumed in late September, 2014, continuing through the first week of October. This report covers the basic analysis of data collected during these two periods

This report presents the detailed results from two additional surveys which HSI conducted in July and August 2017. Street dog surveys were conducted across all twelve wards in Vadodara using the methodology already implemented in 2014 to reassess the composition and sterilization rate in the street dog population. Extensive household surveys across six of the twelve wards (ward 1, 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9) were conducted to estimate the total private dog population and to explore dog demographics. Data included how private dogs contribute to the street dog population and a study of the human-dog relationship as a driver of street dog and private dog population dynamics. The household survey further included KAP (Knowledge, Attitude and Practices) questions assessing the level of rabies knowledge, bite wound treatment knowledge and bite treatment practices as well as practices and attitudes towards street dogs

Humane Society International (HSI) conducted two dog population surveys in all wards of Nainital (human population of 41,377). One was a street dog survey and the other was a survey of the private (pet) dog population. The survey generated an estimate of the street dog population of 770 dogs (19 street dogs per 1,000 people; 7.0 street dogs per km). Results from the household survey generated an estimate of the private dog population of 2,155 dogs (21.38 % dogs owning households and 0.23 dogs per household). Sterilization rates among private dogs were relatively high. Forty (42.6%) of the 94 dogs were sterilized. Eleven of the 40 sterilized dogs were sterilized at the ABC facility run by HSI India in Nainital. The monitoring street count surveys estimate an average density of 7.0 adult roaming dogs per km of street in the early morning of which 45.3% are female. None of the females were spayed and none of the males were castrated. Almost one third (29.4%) of the adult females were lactating. Most private dogs (72%) had received a rabies vaccination in the last 12 months. About 3.3% of households reported that someone in the household had experienced a dog bite in the last 12 months

This baseline survey was conducted on the 27th and 28th of November, 2017 to generate a dog population size estimate and collect baseline data on the composition of the dog population. We estimate that there are 48 street dogs in the Kalhaar Bungalows area (all the sectors of Kalhaar Bungalows). This translates to about 6 dogs per 100 residents in the Kalhaar Bungalows area. Sterilization rates were high with 90% of the dogs being sterilized and 84% of the female population. The street dog survey was conducted by walking along all the streets of the Kalhaar Bungalows. We teamed-up with local volunteers, who were aware of the location of each dog. A Sight Re-sight experiment was also conducted using photographs of 14 dogs with unique markings encountered on the first day. On the second day photographs were compared and matched if possible to generate a detectability. The resulting detectability of 0.9285 is very high. Body condition scores were overall good with no dogs showing signs of malnutrition or low body weight. Although November is the peak of the dog breeding season India, we only found one lactating female with days old puppies (pups are not included in the estimate because pups survival is very low). Skin conditions were absent except for one male dog who showed a skin infection
