    New Physics and CP Violation in Hyperon Nonleptonic Decays

    The sum of the CP-violating asymmetries A(Lambda_-^0) and A(Xi_-^-) in hyperon nonleptonic decays is presently being measured by the E871 experiment. We evaluate contributions to the asymmetries induced by chromomagnetic-penguin operators, whose coefficients can be enhanced in certain models of new physics. Incorporating recent information on the strong phases in Xi->Lambda pi decay, we show that new-physics contributions to the two asymmetries can be comparable. We explore how the upcoming results of E871 may constrain the coefficients of the operators. We find that its preliminary measurement is already better than the epsilon parameter of K-Kbar mixing in bounding the parity-conserving contributions.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    Final-State Phases in Charmed Meson Two-Body Nonleptonic Decays

    Observed decay rates indicate large phase differences among the amplitudes for the charge states in DKˉπD \to \bar K \pi and DKˉπD \to \bar K^* \pi but relatively real amplitudes in the charge states for DKˉρD \to \bar K \rho. This feature is traced using an SU(3) flavor analysis to a sign flip in the contribution of one of the amplitudes contributing to the latter processes in comparison with its contribution to the other two sets. This amplitude may be regarded as an effect of rescattering and is found to be of magnitude comparable to others contributing to charmed particle two-body nonleptonic decays.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures, to be submitted to Phys.     Final-State Phases in BDπ,DπB \to D \pi, D^* \pi, and DρD \rho Decays

    The final-state phases in BˉDπ,Dπ\bar{B} \to D \pi, D^* \pi, and DρD \rho decays appear to follow a pattern similar to those in DKˉπD \to \bar{K} \pi, Kˉπ\bar{K}^* \pi, and Kˉρ\bar{K} \rho decays. Each set of processes is characterized by three charge states but only two independent amplitudes, so the amplitudes form triangles in the complex plane. For the first two sets the triangles appear to have non-zero area, while for the DρD \rho or Kˉρ\bar{K} \rho decays the areas of the triangles are consistent with zero. Following an earlier discussion of this behavior for DD decays, a similar analysis is performed for B decays, and the relative phases and magnitudes of contributing amplitudes are determined.     Reducible connections and non-local symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations

    We construct the most general reducible connection that satisfies the self-dual Yang-Mills equations on a simply connected, open subset of flat R4\mathbb{R}^4. We show how all such connections lie in the orbit of the flat connection on R4\mathbb{R}^4 under the action of non-local symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations. Such connections fit naturally inside a larger class of solutions to the self-dual Yang-Mills equations that are analogous to harmonic maps of finite type.Comment: AMSLatex, 15 pages, no figures.     Possibility of extracting the weak phase γ\gamma from ΛbΛD0\Lambda_b \to \Lambda D^0 decays

    We explore the possibility of extracting the weak phase γ\gamma from pure tree decays ΛbΛ(D0,D0ˉ,DCP0)\Lambda_b \to \Lambda (D^0, \bar{D^0}, D^0_{CP}) in a model independent way. The CP violating weak phase γ\gamma can be determined cleanly, without any hadronic uncertainties, as these decay modes are free from the penguin pollutions. Furthermore, neither tagging nor time dependent studies are required to extract the angle γ\gamma with these modes.Comment: 12 pages, LaTex, Minor changes in the text, version to appear in Phys.     It is believed that the production rate of D0K0Kˉ0D^0\to K^0\bar K^0 is almost solely determined by final state interactions (FSI) and hence provides an ideal place to test FSI models. Here we examine model calculations of the contributions from s-channel resonance fJ(1710)f_J(1710) and t-channel exchange to the FSI effects in D0K0Kˉ0D^0\to K^0\bar K^0.     Elastic and inelastic SU(3)-breaking final-state interactions in B decays to pseudoscalar mesons

    We discuss all contributions from Zweig-rule-satisfying SU(3)-breaking final state interactions (FSIs)in the B -> PP decays (neglecting charmed intermediate states), where PP=pi pi, pi K, KK, pi eta (eta'), and K eta (eta'). First, effects of SU(3) breaking in rescattering through Pomeron exchange are studied. Then, after making a plausible assumption concerning the pattern of SU(3) breaking in non-Pomeron FSIs, we give general formulas for how the latter modify short-distance (SD) amplitudes. In the SU(3) limit, these formulas depend on three effective parameters characterizing the strength of all non-Pomeron rescattering effects. We point out that the experimental bounds on the B -> K^+K^- branching ratio may limit the value of only one of these FSI parameters. Thus, the smallness of the B -> K^+K^- decay rate does not imply negligible rescattering effects in other decays. Assuming a vanishing value of this parameter, we perform various fits to the available B -> PP branching ratios. The fits determine the quark-diagram SD amplitudes, the two remaining FSI parameters and the weak angle gamma. While the set of all B -> PP branching ratios is well described with gamma around its expected SM value, the fits permit other values of gamma as well. For a couple of such good fits, we predict asymmetries for the B -> K pi, pi^+ eta (eta'), K^+ eta (eta') decays as well as the values of the CP-violating parameters S_{pi pi} and C_{pi pi} for the time-dependent rate of B^0(t) -> pi^+ pi^-. Apart from a problem with the recent B^+ -> pi^+ eta asymmetry measurement, comparison with the data seems to favour the values of gamma in accordance with SM expectations.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figure

    Using data collected with the BESII detector at e+ee^{+}e^{-} storage ring Beijing Electron Positron Collider, the measurements of relative branching fractions for seven Cabibbo suppressed hadronic weak decays D0KK+D^0 \to K^- K^+, π+π\pi^+ \pi^-, KK+π+πK^- K^+ \pi^+ \pi^- and π+π+ππ\pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^-, D+K0ˉK+D^+ \to \bar{K^0} K^+, KK+π+K^- K^+ \pi^+ and ππ+π+\pi^- \pi^+ \pi^+ are presented.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Moving towards adaptive search in digital libraries

    Search applications have become very popular over the last two decades, one of the main drivers being the advent of the Web. Nevertheless, searching on the Web is very different to searching on smaller, often more structured collections such as digital libraries, local Web sites, and intranets. One way of helping the searcher locating the right information for a specific information need in such a collection is by providing well-structured domain knowledge to assist query modification and navigation. There are two main challenges which we will both address in this chapter: acquiring the domain knowledge and adapting it automatically to the specific interests of the user community. We will outline how in digital libraries a domain model can automatically be acquired using search engine query logs and how it can be continuously updated using methods resembling ant colony behaviour. © 2011 Springer-Verlag
