Flavor SU(3) symmetry and QCD factorization in and decays
Using flavor SU(3) symmetry, we perform a model-independent analysis of
charmless decays. All the relevant
topological diagrams, including the presumably subleading diagrams, such as the
QCD- and EW-penguin exchange diagrams and flavor-singlet weak annihilation
ones, are introduced. Indeed, the QCD-penguin exchange diagram turns out to be
important in understanding the data for penguin-dominated decay modes. In this
work we make efforts to bridge the (model-independent but less quantitative)
topological diagram or flavor SU(3) approach and the (quantitative but somewhat
model-dependent) QCD factorization (QCDF) approach in these decays, by
explicitly showing how to translate each flavor SU(3) amplitude into the
corresponding terms in the QCDF framework. After estimating each flavor SU(3)
amplitude numerically using QCDF, we discuss various physical consequences,
including SU(3) breaking effects and some useful SU(3) relations among decay

Hadronic Charmed Meson Decays Involving Tensor Mesons
Charmed meson decays into a pseudoscalar meson P and a tensor meson T are
studied. The charm to tensor meson transition form factors are evaluated in the
Isgur-Scora-Grinstein-Wise (ISGW) quark model. It is shown that the
Cabibbo-allowed decay is dominated by the
W-annihilation contribution and has the largest branching ratio in
decays. We argue that the Cabibbo-suppressed mode
should be suppressed by one order of magnitude relative to . When the finite width effect of the tensor resonances is taken
into account, the decay rate of is generally enhanced by a factor of
. Except for , the predicted branching ratios
of decays are in general too small by one to two orders of magnitude
compared to experiment. However, it is very unlikely that the
transition form factors can be enhanced by a factor of within the
ISGW quark model to account for the discrepancy between theory and experiment.
As many of the current data are still preliminary and lack sufficient statistic
significance, more accurate measurements are needed to pin down the issue.Comment: 11 page

Enhanced Decay, Inclusive Production, and the Gluon Anomaly
The experimental hint of large is linked to the
penguins via the gluon anomaly. Using running in the
-- coupling, the standard penguin alone seems
insufficient, calling for the need of dipole at 10% level from new
physics, which could also resolve the and charm counting
problems. The intereference of standard and new physics contributions may
result in direct CP asymmetries at 10% level, which could be observed soon at B

Test of Factorization Hypothesis from Exclusive Non-leptonic B decays
We investigate the possibility of testing factorization hypothesis in
non-leptonic exclusive decays of B-meson. In particular, we considered the non
factorizable \bar{B^0} -> D^{(*)+} D_s^{(*)-} modes and \bar{B^0} -> D^{(*)+}
(\pi^-, \rho^-) known as well-factorizable modes. By taking the ratios
BR(\bar{B^0}-> D^{(*)+}D_s^{(*)-})/BR(\bar{B^0}-> D^{(*)+}(\pi^-,\rho^-)), we
found that under the present theoretical and experimental uncertainties there's
no evidence for the breakdown of factorization description to heavy-heavy

Ultrathin compound semiconductor on insulator layers for high performance nanoscale transistors
Over the past several years, the inherent scaling limitations of electron
devices have fueled the exploration of high carrier mobility semiconductors as
a Si replacement to further enhance the device performance. In particular,
compound semiconductors heterogeneously integrated on Si substrates have been
actively studied, combining the high mobility of III-V semiconductors and the
well-established, low cost processing of Si technology. This integration,
however, presents significant challenges. Conventionally, heteroepitaxial
growth of complex multilayers on Si has been explored. Besides complexity, high
defect densities and junction leakage currents present limitations in the
approach. Motivated by this challenge, here we utilize an epitaxial transfer
method for the integration of ultrathin layers of single-crystalline InAs on
Si/SiO2 substrates. As a parallel to silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology14,we
use the abbreviation "XOI" to represent our compound semiconductor-on-insulator
platform. Through experiments and simulation, the electrical properties of InAs
XOI transistors are explored, elucidating the critical role of quantum
confinement in the transport properties of ultrathin XOI layers. Importantly, a
high quality InAs/dielectric interface is obtained by the use of a novel
thermally grown interfacial InAsOx layer (~1 nm thick). The fabricated FETs
exhibit an impressive peak transconductance of ~1.6 mS/{\mu}m at VDS=0.5V with
ON/OFF current ratio of greater than 10,000 and a subthreshold swing of 107-150
mV/decade for a channel length of ~0.5 {\mu}m
TeraHz tuning of whispering gallery modes in a PDMS, stand-alone, stretchable microsphere
We report on tuning the optical whispering gallery modes in a poly dimethyl
siloxane-based (PDMS) microsphere resonator by more than a THz. The PDMS
microsphere system consists of a solid spherical resonator directly formed with
double stems on either side. The stems act like tie-rods for simple mechanical
stretching of the microresonator over tens of microns, resulting in tuning of
the whispering gallery modes by one free spectral range. Further investigations
demonstrate that the whispering gallery mode shift has a higher sensitivity
(0.13 nm/{\mu}N) to an applied force when the resonator is in its maximally

Using B_s^0 Decays to Determine the CP Angles \alpha and \gamma
Dighe, Gronau and Rosner have shown that, by assuming SU(3) flavor symmetry
and first-order SU(3) breaking, it is possible to extract the CP angles \alpha
and \gamma from measurements of the decay rates of B_d^0(t) --> \pi^+\pi^-,
B_d^0 --> \pi^- K^+ and B^+ --> \pi^+ K^0, along with their charge-conjugate
processes. We extend their analysis to include the SU(3)-related decays B_s^0
--> \pi^+ K^-, B_s^0(t) --> K^+ K^- and B_s^0 --> K^0 {\bar K^0}. There are
several advantages to this extension: discrete ambiguities are removed, fewer
assumptions are necessary, and the method works even if all strong phases
vanish. In addition, we show that \gamma can be obtained cleanly, with no
penguin contamination, by using the two decays B_s^0(t) --> K^+ K^- and B_s^0
--> K^0 {\bar K^0}.Comment: 28 pages, LaTe
Randomised, non-comparative phase II study of weekly docetaxel with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil or with capecitabine in oesophagogastric cancer: the AGITG ATTAX trial
BACKGROUND: Docetaxel administered 3-weekly with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil leads to better survival than does standard therapy in patients with oesophagogastric cancer, but leads to high rates of haematological toxicity. Weekly docetaxel is associated with less haematological toxicity. This randomised phase II study tested weekly docetaxel-based combination chemotherapy regimens, with the aim of maintaining their activity while reducing toxicity. METHODS: Patients with histologically confirmed metastatic oesophageal or gastric carcinoma were randomised to receive weekly docetaxel (30 mg m(-2)) on days 1 and 8, cisplatin (60 mg m(-2)) on day 1, and 5-fluorouracil (200 mg m(-2) per day) continuously, every 3 weeks (weekly TCF, wTCF); or docetaxel (30 mg m(-2)) on days 1 and 8 and capecitabine (1600 mg m(-2) per day) on days 1-14, every 3 weeks (weekly TX, wTX). RESULTS: A total of 106 patients were enrolled (wTCF, n=50; wTX, n=56). Response rates, the primary end point, were 47% with wTCF and 26% with wTX. Rates of febrile neutropenia were low in each arm. Median progression-free and overall survival times were 5.9 and 11.2 months for wTCF and 4.6 and 10.1 months for wTX, respectively. CONCLUSION: Weekly TCF and TX have encouraging activity and less haematological toxicity than TCF administered 3-weekly. Weekly docetaxel-based combination regimens warrant further evaluation in this disease
Consensus report from the 8th International Forum for Liver Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
ObjectivesThe 8th International Forum for Liver Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), held in Basel, Switzerland, in October 2017, brought together clinical and academic radiologists from around the world to discuss developments in and reach consensus on key issues in the field of gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI since the previous Forum held in 2013.MethodsTwo main themes in liver MRI were considered in detail at the Forum: the use of gadoxetic acid for contrast-enhanced MRI in patients with liver cirrhosis and the technical performance of gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI, both opportunities and challenges. This article summarises the expert presentations and the delegate voting on consensus statements discussed at the Forum.Results and conclusionsIt was concluded that gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI has higher sensitivity for the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), when compared with multidetector CT, by utilising features of hyperenhancement in the arterial phase and hypointensity in the hepatobiliary phase (HBP). Recent HCC management guidelines recognise an increasing role for gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI in early diagnosis and monitoring post-resection. Additional research is needed to define the role of HBP in predicting microvascular invasion, to better define washout during the transitional phase in gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI for HCC diagnosis, and to reduce the artefacts encountered in the arterial phase. Technical developments are being directed to shortening the MRI protocol for reducing time and patient discomfort and toward utilising faster imaging and non-Cartesian free-breathing approaches that have the potential to improve multiphasic dynamic imaging.Key points⢠Gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI provides higher diagnostic sensitivity than CT for diagnosing HCC. ⢠Gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI has roles in early-HCC diagnosis and monitoring post-resection response. ⢠Faster imaging and free-breathing approaches have potential to improve multiphasic dynamic imaging
