    Semilocal Generic Formal Fibers

Let T be a complete local ring and C a finite set of incomparable prime ideals of T. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for T to be the completion of an integral domain whose generic formal fiber is semilocal with maximal ideals the elements of C. In addition, if char T = 0, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for T to be the completion of an excellent integral domain whose generic formal fiber is semilocal with maximal ideals the elements of C.Comment: 15 page

Scalar field phase dynamics in preheating

We study the model of a massive inflaton field ϕ\phi coupled to another scalar filed χ\chi with interaction term g2ϕ2χ2g^2\phi^2\chi^2 for the first stage of preheating. We obtain the the behavior of the phase in terms of the iteration of a simple family of circle maps. When expansion of the universe is taken into account the qualitative behavior of the phase and growth number evolution is reminiscent of the behavior found in the case without expansion.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX; submitted to the Proceedings of Eleventh Marcel Grossmann Meetin

New World and Mediterranean wine tourism: A comparative analysis

    Get PDF
This is a theoretical paper providing a comparative overview of wine tourism in the New World and Europe – particularly the Mediterranean region. The review is timely because while there has been substantial wine tourism research in Anglophone countries, less has occurred in Europe, despite the fact that it has such a long history of wine production. The paper suggests a series of differences between the two areas based on both structural factors affecting the context in which wine is produced. These contextual factors relate both to wine supply and to demand, and include production factors, appellation systems, attitudes to business, producer commitment, consumption patterns, the search for experience, and the stimulus to wine tourism. The paper also considers aspects of the practice of wine tourism, including events, education and the cellar door experience, before offering some underlying themes and areas for future research

The Teaching and Learning of Esperanto

One of the first tasks faced by Zamenhof, the inventor of Esperanto (1887), was establishing its status as a living language, achieved in part by teaching the language to others, in part by translation and literary creation, and in part by forming a community of users. One of the earliest learners, Leo Tolstoy, emphasized its ease of learning, and both the early history of the language and contemporary experience show that the receptive and productive skills entailed in learning the language are unusually mutually reinforcing. In formal language-learning situations, students are able to reach an acceptable level of proficiency relatively quickly, allowing them to put the language to practical use. They are also able to learn on their own. Ease of learning builds confidence, so that Esperanto constitutes a good introduction to language study in general, even though the language is more complex linguistically than it may appear at first sight. The language also helps the learning of cultural sensitivity. In recent years, electronic aids to teaching and learning have proliferated and there are many resources available to the teacher and learner

The Love Effect: Crossing Our Divides Together Into Flourishing

NPO Statement: In a polarized, “us” versus “them” society: How do we embrace and cultivate the richness of ourselves, recognize the goodness of “others,” and come together as one diverse human family; wherein, we grow into greater individual and collective flourishing? Key Benefits or Insights from Research: The clearest, most helpful insight from my research and reflection is that “strengthening” one’s ability to be in relationships, is much like strengthening one’s muscles. Getting stronger physically, isn’t easy. It takes sweat, perseverance, and effort. You have to wisely push your limits in safe and healthy ways. Relationships, especially when it comes to difference and bridging divides, are much the same. A person must mindfully grow their ability to lovingly be with otherness—whether it’s political, religious, racial, or otherwise. When we do it well, it can leave you, metaphorically, out of breath, bent over, and spent. Yet, also feeling more alive and radiant. Vocational Context: I currently teach yoga, both online and in person. Part of this includes being a mentor for Blissology, an international yoga community that does a lot of online training. I also write, primarily online. After getting this doctorate, I will add life coaching and spiritual direction certificates to my resume. Description of the Project: The foundation of the project is a book, titled The Love Effect. Love, quite simply, brings out the best in ourselves and others. Its hallmarks of gratitude, curiosity, understanding, grace, compassion, vulnerability, presence, laughter, nonjudgment, and kindness, heal, nourish, and draw people together. After the book is published, I will use it to create communal workshops, shape coaching and direction sessions, and hopefully craft an interactive college course
