Internet of Things of Trees - Conversational objects via SMS protocols

    Get PDF
The paper describes a ‘work in progress’ to develop a system to enable users to engage with the historical and environmental story behind veteran trees in Hampstead Heath in the spirit of the Internet of Things. Unlike other ‘Internet of Trees’ projects, this study focuses on story telling rather than sensor networks. Building on previous work, conversational agents (‘chatbots’) are used as proxies for the trees to enable a two-way narrative exchange between the user and the ‘tree’. Two interaction pathways are proposed (direct SMS and web-based geofencing) and the technical development of both approaches is described, as well as ethnographic studies undertaken on Hampstead Heath to elicit engaging content for the chatbot. An initial deployment of the SMS-based interaction at Tate Exchange, a project space within Tate Modern, London is discussed and a preliminary evaluation presented

Currently enzymes become a need of food and non-food industries. Alpha amylase (a-1,4 glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.1) is an enzyme that hydrolyses starch into oligosaccharides and dextrin. The enzyme has been commercially available which mostly produced by Bacillus spp. The bacterium used in thisexperiment was Bacillus sp SW2, which was isolated from Composting Unit at Bumi Serpong Damai, Tangerang. The aim of this experiment was to find the most appropriate starch as an carbon source for enzyme production. The starches observed were tapioca, potato, and cornstarch at concentration of5%. The fermentation was conducted in shaking incubator, in 125 ml Erlenmeyer at 60°C, various pHs, and agitations. The pHs observed were 6, 7.5, 8 and 9 while the rates of agitation applied were 150, 200, and 250 rpm. The results showed that the highest enzyme activity was 20.99 Unit/ml, whichwas reached after 42 hours of fermentation using cornstarch, pH 8 and 200 rpm agitation

Although still not present at an equal proportion to men, women are becoming increasingly present in the labor force in the United States. It may be important to consider the possible effect that women\u27s increased labor force participation has for the community. More specifically, this research aims to examine the effects of women\u27s increased labor force participation on voluntary participation in rural communities. Data from a survey completed in 2004 was used to explore the present topic of women volunteers in rural communities. Questionnaires were sent by mail to 15,000 residents of Iowa. Theories relating to this area of research were examined and tested to gain a better understanding of the roles of women in small communities. Limited evidence was found in favor of both human capital and role overload perspectives

Online repurchasing intention is important because it can increase company profit. The study was conducted to determine the effect of altruism, perceived ease of use, reputation on online repurchasing intention in transportation GO-JEK.The research was conducted at the Yogyakarta, samples taken as many as 100 people with accidental sampling method. The data collection is done by distributing questionnaires using a scale of 1-10 points to measure 16 indicators. The results of this study indicate the results for the variable altruism positive effect on online repurchasing intention, perceived ease of use positive effect on online repurchasing intention, reputation positive on online repurchasing intention. For the determinantion of the results of this test is 12,4% on online repurchasing intention

The willingness to boycott among Malaysian Muslims

    Get PDF
The phenomenon of consumer boycotts has been in existence in the marketplace menacing businesses and organizations since more than a century ago (Smith & Li, 2010).Yet, the rightful and deserved attention in understanding consumer boycotts were acknowledged by academicians and researchers only within the last past decade.Consumer boycott is a form of economic as well as social threat that may threaten the brand image (Klein, Smith & John, 2004) and corporate image of a firm (Lindenmeier, Tscheulin & Drevs, 2012) on a smaller scale. But on a larger scale, consumer boycotts if not carefully dealt with, may affect the host country's economy and its image. As such, the threats and occurrences of boycott can possibly upset the efforts in attracting and retaining investments in a country. Consequently, it is suffice to state that boycott is a situation where marketers, businesses, organizations or firms would want to avoid at all cost (Klein et al, 2004). Based on previous empirical researches, there are various psychological (Klein et al, 2004; Smith & Li, 2004) and social motivations underlying a boycott; as the nature of boycott is diverse (Friedman, 1985); nonetheless, boycotts are often used widely as a "coercive marketplace tactic" (John & Klein, 2003) to achieve certain instrumental or expressive goals (Friedman, 1985)

Through a behavioral approach the child will interact with peers, interaction with peers is needed by children so that all activities in school can run as desired. Prosocial in children must be fostered early on. The research conducted was Classroom Action Research, data analysis using quantitative data analysis techniques with research subjects children aged 5-6 years at TK Aisyiyah III Pekanbaru City. the results of this study can be concluded that the prosocial behavior of B3 TK Aisyiyah III group can be improved through a behavioral approach ( reinforcement techniques). Increased child prosocial behavior can be seen in the results of pre-action research obtained 45% are in undeveloped criteria. In the first cycle meeting 2 was obtained 59% which is in the criteria began to develop. In the second cycle meeting 2 obtained 76% of children are in the criteria of developing according to expectations. The study was stopped until the second cycle because it met the criteria for success indicators that is at least 70% of children whose prosocial behavior developed as expected

Future Substitutes for Diesel Fuel in U.S. Truck and Railroad Freight Transportation

    Get PDF
This paper explains why diesel fuel is the preferred fuel in freight transportation. It identifies possible substitute fuels for motor carriers and railroads that are currently available and under development. It identifies which of these substitutes are likely to be used in the near and medium term years and the circumstances under which they will be used. The paper discusses which fuel efficiency measures have been successfully adopted by railroads and motor carriers. Finally, it suggests opportunities for transportation researchers to evaluate investment options to improve fuel efficiencies in freight transportation
