Deuterium Abundance in the Most Metal-Poor Damped Lyman alpha System: Converging on Omega_baryons
The most metal-poor DLA known to date, at z = 2.61843 in the spectrum of the
QSO Q0913+072, with an oxygen abundance only about 1/250 of the solar value,
shows six well resolved D I Lyman series transitions in high quality echelle
spectra recently obtained with the ESO VLT. We deduce a value of the deuterium
abundance log (D/H) = -4.56+/-0.04 which is in good agreement with four out of
the six most reliable previous determinations of this ratio in QSO absorbers.
We find plausible reasons why in the other two cases the 1 sigma errors may
have been underestimated by about a factor of two. The addition of this latest
data point does not change significantly the mean value of the primordial
abundance of deuterium, suggesting that we are now converging to a reliable
measure of this quantity. We conclude that = -4.55+/-0.03 and
Omega_b h^2 (BBN) = 0.0213+/-0.0010 (68% confidence limits). Including the
latter as a prior in the analysis of the five year data of WMAP leads to a
revised best-fitting value of the power-law index of primordial fluctuations
n_s = 0.956+/-0.013 (1 sigma) and n_s < 0.990 with 99% confidence. Considering
together the constraints provided by WMAP 5, (D/H)_p, baryon oscillations in
the galaxy distribution, and distances to Type Ia supernovae, we arrive at the
current best estimates Omega_b h^2 = 0.0224+/-0.0005 and n_s = 0.959+/-0.013.Comment: 13 pages, 8 Figures. Revised version following referee's comments.

Rhyolitic Melt Production in the Midst of a Continental Arc Flare-Up - The Heterogenous Caspana Ignimbrite of the Altiplano-Puna Volcanic Complex of the Central Andes
The ~5 km3, 4.54 to 4.09 Ma Caspana Ignimbrite of the Altiplano-Puna Volcanic Complex (APVC) of the Central Andes records the eruption of an andesite and two distinct rhyolitic magmas. It provides a unique opportunity to investigate the production of silicic magmas in a continental arc flare-up, where small volumes of magma rarely survive homogenization into the regional magmatic system that is dominated by supereruptions of monotonous dacitic ignimbrites.
The fall deposit and thin flow unit that record the first stage of the eruption (Phase 1) tapped a crystal-poor peraluminous rhyolite. The petrological and geochemical characteristics of Phase 1 are best explained by partial melting of- or reheating and melt extraction from a granodioritic intrusion. Phase 2 of the eruption records the emplacement of a more extensive flow unit with a crystal-poor, fayalite-bearing rhyolite and a porphyritic to glomeroporphyritic andesite containing abundant plagioclase-orthopyroxene-Fe-Ti oxide (norite) glomerocrysts. The isotopic composition of Phase 2 is significantly more “crustal” than Phase 1, indicating a separate petrogenetic path. The mineral assemblage of the noritic glomerocrysts and the observed trend between andesite and Phase 2 rhyolite are reproduced by rhyolite-MELTS based models.
P-T-H2O estimates indicate that the main (Phase 2) reservoir resided between 400-200 MPa, with the andesite recording the deeper pressures and a temperature range of 1060 to 920 °C. Rhyolite phase equilibria predict an estimated temperature of ~775 °C and ~5 wt% H2O. Pressures derived from phase equilibria indicate that the rhyolite was extracted directly from the noritic cumulate at ~340 MPa and stored at slightly shallower pressures (200-300 MPa) prior to eruption. The rhyolite-MELTS models reveal that latent-heat buffering during the extraction and storage process results in a shallow liquidus during the extensive crystallization that produced a noritic cumulate in equilibrium with a rhyodacitic residual liquid. Spikes in latent heat facilitated the segregation of the residual liquid, creating the pre-eruptive compositional gap of ~16 wt% SiO2 between the andesite and the Phase 2 rhyolite.
Unlike typical APVC magmas, low ƒO2 conditions in the andesite promoted co- crystallization of orthopyroxene and ilmenite in lieu of clinopyroxene and magnetite. This resulted in relatively high Fe concentrations in the rhyodacite and Phase 2 rhyolite. Combined with the co-crystallization of plagioclase, this low oxidation state forced high Fe2+/Mg and Fe/Ca in the Phase 2 rhyolite, which promoted fayalite stability. The dominance of low Fe3+/FeTot and Fe-Ti oxide equilibria indicate low ƒO2 (ΔFMQ 0 - ΔFMQ -1) conditions in the rhyolite indicate that the low oxidation state was inherited by the Phase 2 rhyolite from the andesite.
We propose that the serendipitous location on the periphery of the regional thermal anomaly of the Altiplano Puna Magma Body (APMB) permitted the small volume magma reservoir that fed the Caspana ignimbrite eruption to retain its heterogeneous character. This resulted in the record of rhyolitic liquids with disparate origins that evaded assimilation into the large dacite supereruption-feeding APMB. As such, the Caspana Ignimbrite provides a unique window into the multiscale processes that build long-lived continental silicic magma systems
The Correlation Between Poverty and Access to Essential Surgical Care in Ghana: A Geospatial Analysis.
BACKGROUND: Surgical disease burden falls disproportionately on individuals in low- and middle-income countries. These populations are also the least likely to have access to surgical care. Understanding the barriers to access in these populations is therefore necessary to meet the global surgical need. METHODS: Using geospatial methods, this study explores the district-level variation of two access barriers in Ghana: poverty and spatial access to care. National survey data were used to estimate the average total household expenditure (THE) in each district. Estimates of the spatial access to essential surgical care were generated from a cost-distance model based on a recent surgical capacity assessment. Correlations were analyzed using regression and displayed cartographically. RESULTS: Both THE and spatial access to surgical care were found to have statistically significant regional variation in Ghana (p < 0.001). An inverse relationship was identified between THE and spatial access to essential surgical care (β -5.15 USD, p < 0.001). Poverty and poor spatial access to surgical care were found to co-localize in the northwest of the country. CONCLUSIONS: Multiple barriers to accessing surgical care can coexist within populations. A careful understanding of all access barriers is necessary to identify and target strategies to address unmet surgical need within a given population
The optical counterpart of the bright X-ray transient Swift J1745-26
We present a 30-day monitoring campaign of the optical counterpart of the
bright X-ray transient Swift J1745-26, starting only 19 minutes after the
discovery of the source. We observe the system peaking at i' ~17.6 on day 6
(MJD 56192) to then decay at a rate of ~0.04 mag/day. We show that the optical
peak occurs at least 3 days later than the hard X-ray (15-50 keV) flux peak.
Our measurements result in an outburst amplitude greater than 4.3 magnitudes,
which favours an orbital period < 21 h and a companion star with a spectral
type later than ~ A0. Spectroscopic observations taken with the GTC-10.4 m
telescope reveal a broad (FWHM ~ 1100 km/s), double-peaked H_alpha emission
line from which we constrain the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor to
be K_2 > 250 km/s. The breadth of the line and the observed optical and X-ray
fluxes suggest that Swift J1745-26 is a new black hole candidate located closer

Human Ubc9 Contributes to Production of Fully Infectious Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Virions
Ubc9 was identified as a cellular protein that interacts with the Gag protein of Mason-Pfizer monkey virus. We show here that Ubc9 also interacts with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Gag protein and that their interaction is important for virus replication. Gag was found to colocalize with Ubc9 predominantly at perinuclear puncta. While cells in which Ubc9 expression was suppressed with RNA interference produced normal numbers of virions, these particles were 8- to 10-fold less infectious than those produced in the presence of Ubc9. The nature of this defect was assayed for dependence on Ubc9 during viral assembly, trafficking, and Env incorporation. The Gag-mediated assembly of virus particles and protease-mediated processing of Gag and Gag-Pol were unchanged in the absence of Ubc9. However, the stability of the cell-associated Env glycoprotein was decreased and Env incorporation into released virions was altered. Interestingly, overexpression of the Ubc9 trans-dominant-negative mutant C93A, which is a defective E2-SUMO-1 conjugase, suggests that this activity may not be required for interaction with Gag, virion assembly, or infectivity. This finding demonstrates that Ubc9 plays an important role in the production of infectious HIV-1 virions
Depression, stigma and social isolation: The psychosocial trifecta of primary chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, a cross-sectional and path analysis
OBJECTIVE: Depression is common in individuals with chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CCLE). However, how CCLE may impact patients\u27 psychological well-being is poorly understood, particularly among disproportionally affected populations. We examined the relationships between depression and psychosocial factors in a cohort of predominantly Black patients with primary CCLE (CCLE without systemic manifestations).
METHODS: Cross-sectional assessment of individuals with dermatologist-validated diagnosis of primary CCLE. NIH-PROMIS short-forms were used to measure depression, disease-related stigma, social isolation and emotional support. Linear regression analyses (É‘=0.05) were used to test an a priori conceptual model of the relationship between stigma and depression and the effect of social isolation and emotional support on that association.
RESULTS: Among 121 participants (87.6% women; 85.1% Black), 37 (30.6%) reported moderate to severe depression. Distributions of examined variables divided equally among those which did (eg, work status, stigma (more), social isolation (more), emotional support (less)) and did not (eg, age, sex, race, marital status) significantly differ by depression. Stigma was significantly associated with depression (b=0.77; 95% CI0.65 to 0.90), whereas social isolation was associated with both stigma (b=0.85; 95% CI 0.72 to 0.97) and depression (b=0.70; 95% CI0.58 to 0.92). After controlling for confounders, stigma remained associated with depression (b=0.44; 95% CI0.23 to 0.66) but lost significance (b=0.12; 95% CI -0.14 to 0.39) when social isolation (b=0.40; 95% CI 0.19 to 0.62) was added to the model. Social isolation explained 72% of the total effect of stigma on depression. Emotional support was inversely associated with depression in the univariate analysis; however, no buffer effect was found when it was added to the multivariate model.
CONCLUSION: Our findings emphasise the psychosocial challenges faced by individuals living with primary CCLE. The path analysis suggests that stigmatisation and social isolation might lead to depressive symptoms. Early clinical identification of social isolation and public education demystifying CCLE could help reduce depression in patients with CCLE

Analysis of macroautophagy related proteins in G2019S LRRK2 Parkinson's disease brains with Lewy body pathology
LRRK2, the gene encoding the multidomain kinase Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2), has been linked to familial and sporadic forms of Parkinson's disease (PD), as well as cancer, leprosy and Crohn's disease, establishing it as a target for discovery therapeutics. LRRK2 has been associated with a range of cellular processes, however its physiological and pathological functions remain unclear. The most prevalent LRRK2 mutations in PD have been shown to affect macroautophagy in various cellular models while a role in autophagy signalling has been recapitulated in vivo. Dysregulation of autophagy has been implicated in PD pathology, and this raises the possibility that differential autophagic activity is relevant to disease progression in PD patients carrying LRRK2 mutations. To examine the relevance of LRRK2 to the regulation of macroautophagy in a disease setting we examined the levels of autophagic markers in the basal ganglia of G2019S LRRK2 PD post-mortem tissue, in comparison to pathology-matched idiopathic PD (iPD), using immunoblotting (IB). Significantly lower levels of p62 and LAMP1 were observed in G2019S LRRK2 PD compared to iPD cases. Similarly, an increase in ULK1 was observed in iPD but was not reflected in G2019S LRRK2 PD cases. Furthermore, examination of p62 by immunohistochemistry (IH) recapitulated a distinct signature for G2019S PD. IH of LAMP1, LC3 and ULK1 broadly correlated with the IB results. Our data from a small but pathologically well-characterized cases highlights a divergence of G2019S PD carriers in terms of autophagic response in alpha-synuclein pathology affected brain regions compared to iPD
