Numerical Models of Viscous Accretion Flows Near Black Holes
We report on a numerical study of viscous fluid accretion onto a black hole.
The flow is axisymmetric and uses a pseudo-Newtonian potential to model
relativistic effects near the event horizon. The numerical method is a variant
of the ZEUS code. As a test of our numerical scheme, we are able to reproduce
results from earlier, similar work by Igumenshchev and Abramowicz and Stone et
al. We consider models in which mass is injected onto the grid as well as
models in which an initial equilibrium torus is accreted. In each model we
measure three ``eigenvalues'' of the flow: the accretion rate of mass, angular
momentum, and energy. We find that the eigenvalues are sensitive to r_{in}, the
location of the inner radial boundary. Only when the flow is always supersonic
on the inner boundary are the eigenvalues insensitive to small changes in
r_{in}. We also report on the sensitivity of the results to other numerical
parameters.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, to appear in v573 n2 pt1 ApJ July 10,

A Mid-Infrared Study of the Young Stellar Population in the NGC 2024 Cluster
We present the results of the first broadband 10.8 um survey of the NGC 2024
cluster. The mid-infrared data were combined with our previously published JHKL
photometry in order to construct spectral energy distributions for all detected
sources. The main scientific goals were to investigate the nature of the young
stellar objects (YSOs) in the cluster, and to examine the efficiency of
detecting circumstellar disk sources from near-infrared JHKL color-color
diagrams. Out of 59 sources surveyed having K-band magnitudes K < 10.5, we
detected 35 (~59%) at 10 um. Combining these detections, and upper limits for
the non-detections, with existing JHKL data, we identify 1 Class I, 6 flat
spectrum, 28 Class II and 5 Class III sources. We find a circumstellar disk
fraction for NGC 2024 of ~85% +/- 15%, which confirms earlier published
suggestions that the majority, if not all, of the stars in NGC 2024 formed with
disks, and these disks still exist at the present time. In addition, all but
one of the disk sources identified in our survey lie in the infrared excess
region of the JHKL color-color diagram for the cluster. This demonstrates that
JHKL color-color diagrams are extremely efficient in identifying YSOs with
disks. Of the 14 sources with K - L colors suggestive of protostellar objects,
\~29% are protostellar in nature, while ~7% are true Class I YSOs. This may be
due to extinction producing very red K - L colors in Class II YSOs, thus making
them appear similar in color to protostars. This suggests caution must be
applied when estimating the sizes and lifetimes of protostellar populations
within star forming regions based on K - L colors alone. Finally, we calculate
the luminosities of the Class II YSOs in NGC 2024, rho Oph and Taurus and
discuss the results.Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, paper to appear in March A
A DNA methylation signature in the stress driver gene Fkbp5 indicates a neuropathic component in chronic pain
BACKGROUND: Epigenetic changes can bring insight into gene regulatory mechanisms associated with disease pathogenicity, including chronicity and increased vulnerability. To date, we are yet to identify genes sensitive to epigenetic regulation that contribute to the maintenance of chronic pain and with an epigenetic landscape indicative of the susceptibility to persistent pain. Such genes would provide a novel opportunity for better pain management, as their epigenetic profile could be targeted for the treatment of chronic pain or used as an indication of vulnerability for prevention strategies. Here, we investigated the epigenetic profile of the gene Fkbp5 for this potential, using targeted bisulphite sequencing in rodent pre-clinical models of chronic and latent hypersensitive states. RESULTS: The Fkbp5 promoter DNA methylation (DNAm) signature in the CNS was significantly different between models of persistent pain, and there was a significant correlation between CNS and peripheral blood Fkbp5 DNAm, indicating that further exploration of Fkbp5 promoter DNAm as an indicator of chronic pain pathogenic origin is warranted. We also found that maternal separation, which promotes the persistency of inflammatory pain in adulthood, was accompanied by long-lasting reduction in Fkbp5 DNAm, suggesting that Fkbp5 DNAm profile may indicate the increased vulnerability to chronic pain in individuals exposed to trauma in early life. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our data demonstrate that the Fkbp5 promoter DNAm landscape brings novel insight into the differing pathogenic origins of chronic pain, may be able to stratify patients and predict the susceptibility to chronic pain
Giant Thermoelectric Effect from Transmission Supernodes
We predict an enormous order-dependent quantum enhancement of thermoelectric
effects in the vicinity of a higher-order `supernode' in the transmission
spectrum of a nanoscale junction. Single-molecule junctions based on
3,3'-biphenyl and polyphenyl ether (PPE) are investigated in detail. The
nonequilibrium thermodynamic efficiency and power output of a thermoelectric
heat engine based on a 1,3-benzene junction are calculated using many-body
theory, and compared to the predictions of the figure-of-merit ZT.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Infrared and Raman screening of seized novel psychoactive substances:a large scale study of >200 samples
The potential of IR absorption and Raman spectroscopy for rapid identification of novel psychoactive sub- stances (NPS) has been tested using a set of 221 unsorted seized samples suspected of containing NPS. Both IR and Raman spectra showed large variation between the different sub-classifications of NPS and smaller, but still distinguishable, differences between closely related compounds within the same class. In initial tests, screening the samples using spectral searching against a limited reference library allowed only 41% of the samples to be fully identified. The limiting factor in the identification was the large number of active compounds in the seized samples for which no reference vibrational data were available in the libraries rather than poor spectral quality. Therefore, when 33 of these compounds were independently identified by NMR and mass spectrometry and their spectra used to extend the libraries, the percentage of samples identified by IR and Raman screening alone increased to 76%, with only 7% of samples having no identifiable constituents. This study, which is the largest of its type ever carried out, therefore demon- strates that this approach of detecting non-matching samples and then identifying them using standard analytical methods has considerable potential in NPS screening since it allows rapid identification of the constituents of the majority of street quality samples. Only one complete feedback cycle was carried out in this study but there is clearly the potential to carry out continuous identification/updating when this system is used in operational settings
A Serpin shapes the extracellular environment to prevent influenza A virus maturation
Interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) act in concert to provide a tight barrier against viruses. Recent studies have shed light on the contribution of individual ISG effectors to the antiviral state, but most have examined those acting on early, intracellular stages of the viral life cycle. Here, we applied an image-based screen to identify ISGs inhibiting late stages of influenza A virus (IAV) infection. We unraveled a directly antiviral function for the gene SERPINE1, encoding plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1). By targeting extracellular airway proteases, PAI-1 inhibits IAV glycoprotein cleavage, thereby reducing infectivity of progeny viruses. This was biologically relevant for IAV restriction in vivo. Further, partial PAI-1 deficiency, attributable to a polymorphism in human SERPINE1, conferred increased susceptibility to IAV in vitro. Together, our findings reveal that manipulating the extracellular environment to inhibit the last step in a virus life cycle is an important mechanism of the antiviral response
The Mineralogical Record of Oxygen Fugacity Variation and Alteration in Northwest Africa 8159: Evidence for Interaction Between a Mantle Derived Martian Basalt and a Crustal Component(s)
A prominent geochemical feature of basaltic magmatism on Mars is the large range in initial Sr isotopic ratios (approx. 0.702 - 0.724) and initial epsilon-Nd values (approx. -10 to greater than +50). Within this range, the shergottites fall into three discreet subgroups. These subgroups have distinct bulk rock REE patterns, mineral chemistries (i.e. phosphate REE patterns, Ni, Co, V in olivine), oxygen fugacity of crystallization, and stable isotopes, such as O. In contrast, nakhlites and chassignites have depleted epsilon-Nd values (greater than or equal to +15), have REE patterns that are light REE enriched, and appear to have crystallized near the FMQ buffer. The characteristics of these various martian basalts have been linked to different reservoirs in the martian crust and mantle, and their interactions during the petrogenesis of these magmas. These observations pose interesting interpretive challenges to our understanding of the conditions of the martian mantle (e.g. oxygen fugacity) and the interaction of mantle derived magmas with the martian crust and surface. Martian meteorite NWA 8159 is a unique fine-grained augite basalt derived from a highly depleted mantle source as reflected in its initial epsilon-Nd value, contains a pronounced light REE depleted pattern, and crystallized presumably under very oxidizing conditions. Although considerably older than both shergottites and nahklites, it has been petrogenetically linked to both styles of martian magmatism. These unique characteristics of NWA 8159 may provide an additional perspective for deciphering the petrogenesis of martian basalts and the nature of the crust of Mars
The politics of in/visibility: carving out queer space in Ul'yanovsk
<p>In spite of a growing interest within sexualities studies in the concept of queer space (Oswin 2008), existing literature focuses almost exclusively on its most visible and territorialised forms, such as the gay scene, thus privileging Western metropolitan areas as hubs of queer consumer culture (Binnie 2004). While the literature has emphasised the political significance of queer space as a site of resistance to hegemonic gender and sexual norms, it has again predominantly focused on overt claims to public space embodied in Pride events, neglecting other less open forms of resistance.</p><p>
This article contributes new insights to current debates about the construction and meaning of queer space by considering how city space is appropriated by an informal queer network in Ulâianovsk. The group routinely occupied very public locations meeting and socialising on the street or in mainstream cafĂ©s in central Ulâianovsk, although claims to these spaces as queer were mostly contingent, precarious or invisible to outsiders. The article considers how provincial location affects tactics used to carve out communal space, foregrounding the importance of local context and collective agency in shaping specific forms of resistance, and questioning ethnocentric assumptions about the empowering potential of visibility.</p>
A Medium-Resolution Near-Infrared Spectral Library of Late Type Stars: I
We present an empirical infrared spectral library of medium resolution
(R~2000-3000) H (1.6 micron) and K (2.2 micron) band spectra of 218 red stars,
spanning a range of [Fe/H] from ~-2.2 to ~+0.3. The sample includes Galactic
disk stars, bulge stars from Baade's window, and red giants from Galactic
globular clusters. We report the values of 19 indices covering 12 spectral
features measured from the spectra in the library. Finally, we derive
calibrations to estimate the effective temperature, and diagnostic
relationships to determine the luminosity classes of individual stars from
near-infrared spectra.
This paper is part of a larger effort aimed at building a near-IR spectral
library to be incorporated in population synthesis models, as well as, at
testing synthetic stellar spectra.Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures; accepted for publication at ApJS; the spectra

Taking the Measure of the Universe: Precision Astrometry with SIM PlanetQuest
Precision astrometry at microarcsecond accuracy has application to a wide
range of astrophysical problems. This paper is a study of the science questions
that can be addressed using an instrument that delivers parallaxes at about 4
microarcsec on targets as faint as V = 20, differential accuracy of 0.6
microarcsec on bright targets, and with flexible scheduling. The science topics
are drawn primarily from the Team Key Projects, selected in 2000, for the Space
Interferometry Mission PlanetQuest (SIM PlanetQuest). We use the capabilities
of this mission to illustrate the importance of the next level of astrometric
precision in modern astrophysics. SIM PlanetQuest is currently in the detailed
design phase, having completed all of the enabling technologies needed for the
flight instrument in 2005. It will be the first space-based long baseline
Michelson interferometer designed for precision astrometry. SIM will contribute
strongly to many astronomical fields including stellar and galactic
astrophysics, planetary systems around nearby stars, and the study of quasar
and AGN nuclei. SIM will search for planets with masses as small as an Earth
orbiting in the `habitable zone' around the nearest stars using differential
astrometry, and could discover many dozen if Earth-like planets are common. It
will be the most capable instrument for detecting planets around young stars,
thereby providing insights into how planetary systems are born and how they
evolve with time. SIM will observe significant numbers of very high- and
low-mass stars, providing stellar masses to 1%, the accuracy needed to
challenge physical models. Using precision proper motion measurements, SIM will
probe the galactic mass distribution and the formation and evolution of the
Galactic halo. (abridged)Comment: 54 pages, 28 figures, uses emulateapj. Submitted to PAS
