Implementation of Particle Flow Algorithm and Muon Identification
We present the implementation of the Particle Flow Algorithm and the result
of the muon identification developed at the University of Iowa. We use Monte
Carlo samples generated for the benchmark LOI process with the Silicon Detector
design at the International Linear Collider. With the muon identification, an

A Phase I Study of Abiraterone Acetate Combined with BEZ235, a Dual PI3K/mTOR Inhibitor, in Metastatic Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer.
Lessons learnedThe combination of standard dose abiraterone acetate and BEZ235, a pan-class I PI3K and mTORC1/2 inhibitor, was poorly tolerated in men with progressive mCRPC.Although the clinical development of BEZ235 has been discontinued in prostate cancer, agents that more selectively target PI3K-AKT-mTOR signaling may have a more favorable therapeutic index and should continue to be explored.BackgroundAndrogen receptor (AR) and phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) signaling are two commonly perturbed pathways in prostate cancer. Preclinical data have shown that the two pathways compensate for each other when one is inhibited, and combined inhibition of AR and PI3K signaling may be a viable strategy to prevent or overcome castration resistance.MethodsThis phase I study evaluated the safety and tolerability of abiraterone acetate and prednisone combined with BEZ235, a dual PI3K and mTORC1/2 inhibitor, in men with progressive metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who have not received prior chemotherapy.ResultsSix patients (n = 6) were treated at the starting dose level of abiraterone acetate 1,000 mg with prednisone 5 mg twice daily and BEZ235 200 mg twice daily in a 3 + 3 dose escalation design. The study was terminated early because three of the six patients (50%) experienced dose-limiting toxicities: grade 3 mucositis, grade 3 hypotension, and grade 4 dyspnea and pneumonitis. All six patients had previously progressed on abiraterone/prednisone. The median treatment duration was 27 days (range: 3-130 days). No prostate-specific antigen (PSA) decline or objective response were observed.ConclusionThe combination of standard-dose abiraterone/prednisone with BEZ235 200 mg twice daily was poorly tolerated in patients with mCRPC. The on-target and off-target effects of dual PI3K and mTORC inhibition likely contributed to the unacceptable toxicity profile. The Oncologist 2017;22:503-e43
Collimation and asymmetry of the hot blast wave from the recurrent nova V745 Scorpii
The recurrent symbiotic nova V745 Sco exploded on 2014 February 6 and was
observed on February 22 and 23 by the Chandra X-ray Observatory Transmission
Grating Spectrometers. By that time the supersoft source phase had already
ended and Chandra spectra are consistent with emission from a hot, shock-heated
circumstellar medium with temperatures exceeding 10^7K. X-ray line profiles are
more sharply peaked than expected for a spherically-symmetric blast wave, with
a full width at zero intensity of approximately 2400 km/s, a full width at half
maximum of 1200 +/- 30 km/s and an average net blueshift of 165 +/- 10 km/s.
The red wings of lines are increasingly absorbed toward longer wavelengths by
material within the remnant. We conclude that the blast wave was sculpted by an
aspherical circumstellar medium in which an equatorial density enhancement
plays a role, as in earlier symbiotic nova explosions. Expansion of the
dominant X-ray emitting material is aligned close to the plane of the sky and
most consistent with an orbit seen close to face-on. Comparison of an
analytical blast wave model with the X-ray spectra, Swift observations and
near-infrared line widths indicates the explosion energy was approximately
10^43 erg, and confirms an ejected mass of approximately 10^-7 Msun. The total
mass lost is an order of magnitude lower than the accreted mass required to
have initiated the explosion, indicating the white dwarf is gaining mass and is
a supernova Type 1a progenitor candidate.Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journa
Bichromatic Driving of a Solid State Cavity QED System
The bichromatic driving of a solid state cavity quantum electrodynamics
system is used to probe cavity dressed state transitions and observe coherent
interaction between the system and the light field. We theoretically
demonstrate the higher order cavity-dressed states, supersplitting, and AC
stark shift in a solid state system comprised of a quantum dot strongly coupled
to a photonic crystal cavity for on- and far off-resonant cases. For the
off-resonant case, phonons mediate off-resonant coupling between the quantum
dot and the photonic resonator, a phenomenon unique to solid state cavity
quantum electrodynamics.Comment: 8 pages 6 figure
The Origin of the Intrinsic Scatter in the Relation Between Black Hole Mass and Bulge Luminosity for Nearby Active Galaxies
We investigate the origin of the intrinsic scatter in the correlation between
black hole mass (MBH) and bulge luminosity [L(bulge)] in a sample of 45
massive, local (z < 0.35) type~1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We derive MBH
from published optical spectra assuming a spherical broad-line region, and
L(bulge) from detailed two-dimensional decomposition of archival optical Hubble
Space Telescope images. AGNs follow the MBH-L(bulge) relation of inactive
galaxies, but the zero point is shifted by an average of \Delta log MBH ~ -0.3
dex. We show that the magnitude of the zero point offset, which is responsible
for the intrinsic scatter in the MBH-L(bulge) relation, is correlated with
several AGN and host galaxy properties, all of which are ultimately related to,
or directly impact, the BH mass accretion rate. At a given bulge luminosity,
sources with higher Eddington ratios have lower MBH. The zero point offset can
be explained by a change in the normalization of the virial product used to
estimate MBH, in conjunction with modest BH growth (~ 10%--40%) during the AGN
phase. Galaxy mergers and tidal interactions appear to play an important role
in regulating AGN fueling in low-redshift AGNs.Comment: To appear in ApJ; 67 pages, 56 figures, 4 tables, version with full
