Perceptions of unsolicited electronic mail or spam
The proliferation of unsolicited electronic mail or spam is becoming a global concern for many organizations. This paper explores perceptions of unsolicited email, its impact on personal productivity, the question of whether spam is an invasion of privacy, the perceived need to control spam, and the effectiveness of unsolicited email. The results clearly show that while the respondents find spam annoying, they spend very little time in dealing with it. Although the respondents express the need to control spam, they do not believe that governmental control is the solution, but rather that Internet Service Providers and organizations should take the responsibility for controlling unsolicited email. Lastly, the respondents are very unlikely to open, let alone read, and respond to unsolicited email. The results of this study will be useful for guiding organizational, university, and public policies
Long distance decoy state quantum key distribution in optical fiber
The theoretical existence of photon-number-splitting attacks creates a
security loophole for most quantum key distribution (QKD) demonstrations that
use a highly attenuated laser source. Using ultra-low-noise, high-efficiency
transition-edge sensor photodetectors, we have implemented the first version of
a decoy-state protocol that incorporates finite statistics without the use of
Gaussian approximations in a one-way QKD system, enabling the creation of
secure keys immune to photon-number-splitting attacks and highly resistant to
Trojan horse attacks over 107 km of optical fiber.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
NGC 5548 in a Low-Luminosity State: Implications for the Broad-Line Region
We describe results from a new ground-based monitoring campaign on NGC 5548,
the best studied reverberation-mapped AGN. We find that it was in the lowest
luminosity state yet recorded during a monitoring program, namely L(5100) = 4.7
x 10^42 ergs s^-1. We determine a rest-frame time lag between flux variations
in the continuum and the Hbeta line of 6.3 (+2.6/-2.3) days. Combining our
measurements with those of previous campaigns, we determine a weighted black
hole mass of M_BH = 6.54 (+0.26/-0.25) x 10^7 M_sun based on all broad emission
lines with suitable variability data. We confirm the previously-discovered
virial relationship between the time lag of emission lines relative to the
continuum and the width of the emission lines in NGC 5548, which is the
expected signature of a gravity-dominated broad-line region. Using this lowest
luminosity state, we extend the range of the relationship between the
luminosity and the time lag in NGC 5548 and measure a slope that is consistent
with alpha = 0.5, the naive expectation for the broad line region for an
assumed form of r ~ L^alpha. This value is also consistent with the slope
recently determined by Bentz et al. for the population of reverberation-mapped

The Mass of the Black Hole in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 4593 from Reverberation Mapping
We present new observations leading to an improved black hole mass estimate
for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 as part of a reverberation-mapping campaign
conducted at the MDM Observatory. Cross-correlation analysis of the H_beta
emission-line light curve with the optical continuum light curve reveals an
emission-line time delay of 3.73 (+-0.75) days. By combining this time delay
with the H_beta line width, we derive a central black hole mass of M_BH =
9.8(+-2.1)x10^6 M_sun, an improvement in precision of a factor of several over

Rapidly expanding nuclear arsenals in Pakistan and India portend regional and global catastrophe
Pakistan and India may have 400 to 500 nuclear weapons by 2025 with yields from tested 12- to 45-kt values to a few hundred kilotons. If India uses 100 strategic weapons to attack urban centers and Pakistan uses 150, fatalities could reach 50 to 125 million people, and nuclear-ignited fires could release 16 to 36 Tg of black carbon in smoke, depending on yield. The smoke will rise into the upper troposphere, be self-lofted into the stratosphere, and spread globally within weeks. Surface sunlight will decline by 20 to 35%, cooling the global surface by 2° to 5°C and reducing precipitation by 15 to 30%, with larger regional impacts. Recovery takes more than 10 years. Net primary productivity declines 15 to 30% on land and 5 to 15% in oceans threatening mass starvation and additional worldwide collateral fatalities
Detection of the spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, in continental sub-Saharan Africa
The spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, is an insect pest of soft-skinned fruit, native to Eastern Asia. Since 2008, a world-wide dispersal of D. suzukii is seen, characterized by the establishment of the pest in many Asian, American and European countries. While the potential for invasion of continental Africa by D. suzukii has been predicted, its presence has only been shown for Morocco in Northern Africa. Knowledge about a possible establishment in other parts of the continent is needed as a basis for pest management. In 2019, we carried out a first survey in three counties in Kenya to monitor for the presence of D. suzukii using traps baited with a blend of apple cider vinegar and red wine. A total of 389 D. suzukii flies were captured in a fruit farm at Nakuru county, with more female flies being trapped than males. We confirmed the morphological identification of D. suzukii using DNA barcoding. In 2020, we performed a follow-up survey at 14 locations in six counties to delimit the distribution of D. suzukii in the main berry growing zones in Kenya. The survey indicated that so far D. suzukii is restricted to Nakuru county where it was initially detected. This is the first study to provide empirical evidence of D. suzukii in continental sub-Saharan Africa, confirming that the pest is expanding its geographic range intercontinentally. Given the high dispersal potential of D. suzukii, a concerted effort to develop management strategies is a necessity for containment of the pest
