    Towards More Data-Aware Application Integration (extended version)

    Although most business application data is stored in relational databases, programming languages and wire formats in integration middleware systems are not table-centric. Due to costly format conversions, data-shipments and faster computation, the trend is to "push-down" the integration operations closer to the storage representation. We address the alternative case of defining declarative, table-centric integration semantics within standard integration systems. For that, we replace the current operator implementations for the well-known Enterprise Integration Patterns by equivalent "in-memory" table processing, and show a practical realization in a conventional integration system for a non-reliable, "data-intensive" messaging example. The results of the runtime analysis show that table-centric processing is promising already in standard, "single-record" message routing and transformations, and can potentially excel the message throughput for "multi-record" table messages.Comment: 18 Pages, extended version of the contribution to British International Conference on Databases (BICOD), 2015, Edinburgh, Scotlan

    Blood vessel anastomosis is spatially regulated by Flt1 during angiogenesis

    Blood vessel formation is essential for vertebrate development and is primarily achieved by angiogenesis – endothelial cell sprouting from pre-existing vessels. Vessel networks expand when sprouts form new connections, a process whose regulation is poorly understood. Here, we show that vessel anastomosis is spatially regulated by Flt1 (VEGFR1), a VEGFA receptor that acts as a decoy receptor. In vivo, expanding vessel networks favor interactions with Flt1 mutant mouse endothelial cells. Live imaging in human endothelial cells in vitro revealed that stable connections are preceded by transient contacts from extending sprouts, suggesting sampling of potential target sites, and lowered Flt1 levels reduced transient contacts and increased VEGFA signaling. Endothelial cells at target sites with reduced Flt1 and/or elevated protrusive activity were more likely to form stable connections with incoming sprouts. Target cells with reduced membrane-localized Flt1 (mFlt1), but not soluble Flt1, recapitulated the bias towards stable connections, suggesting that relative mFlt1 expression spatially influences the selection of stable connections. Thus, sprout anastomosis parameters are regulated by VEGFA signaling, and stable connections are spatially regulated by endothelial cell-intrinsic modulation of mFlt1, suggesting new ways to manipulate vessel network formation

    The visualisation of fingermarks on Pangolin scales using gelatine lifters

    Recent media reports document the plight of the Pangolin and its current position as “the most trafficked mammal in the world”. They are described by some as scaly anteaters as all species are covered in hard keratinous tissue in the form of overlapping scales acting as a “flexible dermal armour”. It is estimated that between 2011 and 2013, 117,000–234,000 pangolins were slaughtered, but the seizures may only represent as little as 10% of the true volume of pangolins being illegally traded. In this paper, methods to visualise fingermarks on Pangolin scales using gelatine lifters is presented. The gelatine lifters provide an easy to use, inexpensive but effective method to help wildlife crime rangers across Africa and Asia to disrupt the trafficking. The gelatine lifting process visualised marks producing clear ridge detail on 52% of the Pangolin scales examined, with a further 30% showing the impression of a finger with limited ridge detail. The paper builds on an initial sociotechnical approach to establishing requirement, then it focuses on the methods and outcomes relating to lifting fingermarks off Pangolin scales using gelatine lifters, providing an evaluation of its use in practice

    A Case Study on the Origin of Near- Earth Plasma

    This study presents simulations of the coupled space environment during a geomagnetic storm that separates the different sources of near- Earth plasma. These simulations include separate fluids for solar wind and ionospheric protons, ionospheric oxygen, and the plasmasphere. Additionally, they include the effects of both a hot ring current population and a cold plasmaspheric population simultaneously for a geomagnetic storm. The modeled ring current population represents the solution of bounce- averaged kinetic solution; the core plasmaspheric model assumes a fixed temperature of 1- eV and constant pressure along the field line. We find that during the storm, ionospheric protons can be a major contributor to the plasmasheet and ring current and that ionospheric plasma can largely displace solar wind protons in much of the magnetosphere under certain conditions. Indeed, the ionospheric source of plasma cannot be ignored. Significant hemispheric asymmetry is found between the outflow calculated in the summer and winter hemispheres, consistent with past observations. That asymmetric outflow is found to lead to asymmetric filling of the lobes, with the northern (summer) lobe receiving more outflow that has a higher proportion of O+ and the southern (winter) lobe receiving less outflow with a higher proportion of H+. We moreover find that the inclusion of the plasmasphere can have a system- wide impact.
