A hierarchy of models for superconducting thin films
A hierarchy of models for type-II superconducting thin films is presented. Through appropriate asymptotic limits this hierarchy passes from the mesoscopic Ginzburg--Landau model to the London model with isolated vortices as -function singularities to vortex-density models and finally to macroscopic critical-state models. At each stage it is found that a key nondimensional parameter is , where is the penetration depth of the magnetic field, a material parameter, and d and L are a typical thickness and lateral dimension of the film, respectively. The models simplify greatly if this parameter is large or small
Asymptotic approximation of eigenvalues of vector equations
A vectorial extension of the Keller-Rubinow method of computing asymptotic approximations of eigenvalues in bounded domains is presented. The method is applied to the problem of a multimode step-profile cylindrical optical fibre, including the effects of polarisation. A comparison of the asymptotic results with the exact eigenvalues is made when these are available, and the agreement is shown to be good
Sub-mm counterparts to Lyman-break galaxies
We summarize the main results from our SCUBA survey of Lyman-break galaxies
(LBGs) at z~3. Analysis of our sample of LBGs reveals a mean flux of
S850=0.60.2 mJy, while simple models of emission based on the UV
properties predict a mean flux about twice as large. Known populations of LBGs
are expected to contribute flux to the weak sub-mm source portion of the far-IR
background, but are not likely to comprise the bright source (S850>5 mJy) end
of the SCUBA-detected source count. The detection of the LBG, Westphal-MM8, at
1.9 mJy suggests that deeper observations of individual LBGs in our sample
could uncover detections at similar levels, consistent with our UV-based
predictions. By the same token, many sub-mm selected sources with S850<2 mJy
could be LBGs. The data are also consistent with the FarIR/ relation
holding at z=3.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, contributed talk at UMass/INAOE Conference ``Deep

Axisymmetric buckling of a spherical shell embedded in an elastic medium under uniaxial stress at infinity
The problem of a thin spherical linearly-elastic shell, perfectly bonded to an infinite linearly-elastic medium is considered. A constant axisymmetric stress field is applied at infinity in the matrix, and the displacement and stress fields in the shell and matrix are evaluated by means of harmonic potential functions. In order to examine the stability of this solution, the buckling problem of a shell which experiences this deformation is considered. Using Koiter's nonlinear shallow shell theory, restricting buckling patterns to those which are axisymmetric, and using the Rayleigh–Ritz method by expanding the buckling patterns in an infinite series of Legendre functions, an eigenvalue problem for the coefficients in the infinite series is determined. This system is truncated and solved numerically in order to analyse the behaviour of the shell as it undergoes buckling, and to identify the critical buckling stress in two cases — namely where the shell is hollow and the stress at infinity is either uniaxial or radial
From the Boltzmann equation to fluid mechanics on a manifold
We apply the Chapman-Enskog procedure to derive hydrodynamic equations on an

Hybrid Search: Effectively Combining Keywords and Semantic Searches
This paper describes hybrid search, a search method supporting both document and knowledge retrieval via the flexible combination of ontologybased search and keyword-based matching. Hybrid search smoothly copes with
lack of semantic coverage of document content, which is one of the main limitations of current semantic search methods. In this paper we define hybrid search formally, discuss its compatibility with the current semantic trends and present a reference implementation: K-Search. We then show how the method outperforms both keyword-based search and pure semantic search in terms of precision and recall in a set of experiments performed on a collection of about 18.000 technical documents. Experiments carried out with professional users show that users understand the paradigm and consider it very powerful and reliable. K-Search has been ported to two applications released at Rolls-Royce
plc for searching technical documentation about jet engines
Cardiac Electromechanics: The effect of contraction model on the mathematical problem and accuracy of the numerical scheme
Models of cardiac electromechanics usually contain a contraction model determining the active tension induced at the cellular level, and the equations of nonlinear elasticity to determine tissue deformation in response to this active tension. All contraction models are dependent on cardiac electro-physiology, but can also be dependent on\ud
the stretch and stretch-rate in the fibre direction. This fundamentally affects the mathematical problem being solved, through classification of the governing PDEs, which affects numerical schemes that can be used to solve the governing equations. We categorise contraction models into three types, and for each consider questions such as classification and the most appropriate choice from two numerical methods (the explicit and implicit schemes). In terms of mathematical classification, we consider the question of strong ellipticity of the total strain energy (important for precluding ‘unnatural’ material behaviour) for stretch-rate-independent contraction models; whereas for stretch-rate-dependent contraction models we introduce a corresponding third-order problem and explain how certain choices of boundary condition could lead to constraints on allowable initial condition. In terms of suitable numerical methods, we show that an explicit approach (where the contraction model is integrated in the timestep prior to the bulk deformation being computed) is: (i) appropriate for stretch-independent contraction models; (ii) only conditionally-stable, with the stability criterion independent of timestep, for contractions models which just depend on stretch (but not stretch-rate), and (iii) inappropriate for stretch-rate-dependent models
Strong Quantum Spin Correlations Observed in Atomic Spin Mixing
We have observed sub-Poissonian spin correlations generated by collisionally
induced spin mixing in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. We measure a quantum
noise reduction of -7 dB (-10 dB corrected for detection noise) below the
standard quantum limit (SQL) for the corresponding coherent spin states. The
spin fluctuations are detected as atom number differences in the spin states
using fluorescent imaging that achieves a detection noise floor of 8 atoms per
spin component for a probe time of 100 s.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Detailed Structure and Dynamics in Particle-in-Cell Simulations of the Lunar Wake
The solar wind plasma from the Sun interacts with the Moon, generating a wake
structure behind it, since the Moon is to a good approximation an insulator,
has no intrinsic magnetic field and a very thin atmosphere. The lunar wake in
simplified geometry has been simulated via a 1-1/2-D electromagnetic
particle-in-cell code, with high resolution in order to resolve the full phase
space dynamics of both electrons and ions. The simulation begins immediately
downstream of the moon, before the solar wind has infilled the wake region,
then evolves in the solar wind rest frame. An ambipolar electric field and a
potential well are generated by the electrons, which subsequently create a
counter-streaming beam distribution, causing a two-stream instability which
confines the electrons. This also creates a number of electron phase space
holes. Ion beams are accelerated into the wake by the ambipolar electric field,
generating a two stream distribution with phase space mixing that is strongly
influenced by the potentials created by the electron two-stream instability.
The simulations compare favourably with WIND observations.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, to be published in Physics of Plasma
