    The Photonic Band theory and the negative refraction experiment of metallic helix metamaterials

    We develop a theory to compute and interpret the photonic band structure of a periodic array of metallic helices for the first time. Interesting features of band structure include the ingenuous longitudinal and circularly polarized eigenmodes, the wide polarization gap [Science 325, 1513 (2009)], and the helical symmetry guarantees the existence of negative group velocity bands at both sides of the polarization gap and band crossings pinned at the zone boundary with fixed frequencies. A direct proof of negative refraction via a chiral route [Science 306, 1353 (2004)] is achieved for the first time by measuring Gooshanchen shift through a slab of three dimensional bona fide helix metamaterial

The polarization parameter, CP asymmetry and decay width are calculated.     AUSSAT Pty. Ltd., the Australian National Satellite organization, has contracted with the Hughes Aircraft Company (HAC) for the construction of 3 satellites based on the now familiar HS-376 product line. As part of the AUSSAT contract, HAC is conducting an extensive NiCd battery life test program. The life test program, objectives and test results to date are described. Particular emphasis is given to the evaluation of the FS2117 separator as a future replacement for the Pellon 2505 separator of which only a very limited quantity remains

    Gluonic and leptonic decays of heavy quarkonia and the determination of αs(mc)\alpha_s(m_c) and αs(mb)\alpha_s(m_b)

    QCD running coupling constant αs(mc)\alpha_s(m_c) and αs(mb)\alpha_s(m_b) are determined from heavy quarkonia cc‾c\overline{c} and bb‾b\overline{b} decays. The decay rates of V→3gV\rightarrow 3g and V→e+e−V\rightarrow e^+ e^- for V=J/ψV=J/\psi and Υ\Upsilon are estimated by taking into account both relativistic and QCD radiative corrections. The decay amplitudes are derived in the Bethe-Salpeter formalism, and the decay rates are estimated by using the meson wavefunctions which are obtained with a QCD-inspired inter-quark potential. For the V→3gV\rightarrow 3g decay we find the relativistic correction to be very large and to severely suppress the decay rate. Using the experimental values of ratio R_g\equiv \frac {\Gamma (V\longrightarrow 3g)}% {\Gamma (V\longrightarrow e^{+}e^{-})}\approx 10,~32 for V=J/ψ, ΥV=J/\psi, ~\Upsilon respectively, and the calculated widths , we find αs(mc)=0.29±0.02\alpha_{s}(m_c)=0.29\pm 0.02 and αs(mb)=0.20±0.02\alpha_s(m_b)=0.20\pm 0.02. These values for the QCD running coupling constant are substantially enhanced, as compared with the ones obtained without relativistic corrections, and are consistent with the QCD scale parameter ΛMS‾(4)\Lambda_{\overline {MS}}^{(4)}% \approx 200MeV.     Perception of nonnative tonal contrasts by Mandarin-English and English-Mandarin sequential bilinguals

    This study examined the role of acquisition order and crosslinguistic similarity in influencing transfer at the initial stage of perceptually acquiring a tonal third language (L3). Perception of tones in Yoruba and Thai was tested in adult sequential bilinguals representing three different first (L1) and second language (L2) backgrounds: L1 Mandarin-L2 English (MEBs), L1 English-L2 Mandarin (EMBs), and L1 English-L2 intonational/non-tonal (EIBs). MEBs outperformed EMBs and EIBs in discriminating L3 tonal contrasts in both languages, while EMBs showed a small advantage over EIBs on Yoruba. All groups showed better overall discrimination in Thai than Yoruba, but group differences were more robust in Yoruba. MEBs’ and EMBs’ poor discrimination of certain L3 contrasts was further reflected in the L3 tones being perceived as similar to the same Mandarin tone; however, EIBs, with no knowledge of Mandarin, showed many of the same similarity judgments. These findings thus suggest that L1 tonal experience has a particularly facilitative effect in L3 tone perception, but there is also a facilitative effect of L2 tonal experience. Further, crosslinguistic perceptual similarity between L1/L2 and L3 tones, as well as acoustic similarity between different L3 tones, play a significant role at this early stage of L3 tone acquisition.Published versio

    Redshift Distribution of Extragalactic 24 micron Sources

    We present the redshift distribution of a complete, unbiased sample of 24 micron sources down to fnu(24 micron) = 300 uJy (5-sigma). The sample consists of 591 sources detected in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. We have obtained optical spectroscopic redshifts for 421 sources (71%). These have a redshift distribution peaking at z~0.3, with a possible additional peak at z~0.9, and objects detected out to z=4.5. The spectra of the remaining 170 (29%) exhibit no strong emission lines from which to determine a redshift. We develop an algorithm to estimate the redshift distribution of these sources, based on the assumption that they have emission lines but that these lines are not observable due to the limited wavelength coverage of our spectroscopic observations. The redshift distribution derived from all 591 sources exhibits an additional peak of extremely luminous (L(8-1000 micron) > 3 x 10^{12} Lsun) objects at z~2, consisting primarily of sources without observable emission lines. We use optical line diagnostics and IRAC colors to estimate that 55% of the sources within this peak are AGN-dominated. We compare our results to published models of the evolution of infrared luminous galaxies. The models which best reproduce our observations predict a large population of star-formation dominated ULIRGs at z > 1.5 rather than the AGN-dominated sources we observe.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication in Ap

    A note on Zolotarev optimal rational approximation for the overlap Dirac operator

    We discuss the salient features of Zolotarev optimal rational approximation for the inverse square root function, in particular, for its applications in lattice QCD with overlap Dirac quark. The theoretical error bound for the matrix-vector multiplication Hw(Hw2)−1/2Y H_w (H_w^2)^{-1/2}Y is derived. We check that the error bound is always satisfied amply, for any QCD gauge configurations we have tested. An empirical formula for the error bound is determined, together with its numerical values (by evaluating elliptic functions) listed in Table 2 as well as plotted in Figure 3. Our results suggest that with Zolotarev approximation to (Hw2)−1/2 (H_w^2)^{-1/2} , one can practically preserve the exact chiral symmetry of the overlap Dirac operator to very high precision, for any gauge configurations on a finite lattice.Comment: 23 pages, 5 eps figures, v2:minor clarifications, and references added, to appear in Phys.     Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) mediates hydrolysis of triglycerides (TGs) to supply free fatty acids (FFAs) to tissues. Here, we show that LPL activity is also required for hematopoietic stem progenitor cell (HSPC) maintenance. Knockout of Lpl or its obligatory cofactor Apoc2 results in significantly reduced HSPC expansion during definitive hematopoiesis in zebrafish. A human APOC2 mimetic peptide or the human very low-density lipoprotein, which carries APOC2, rescues the phenotype in apoc2 but not in lpl mutant zebrafish. Creating parabiotic apoc2 and lpl mutant zebrafish rescues the hematopoietic defect in both. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is identified as an important factor in HSPC expansion. FFA-DHA, but not TG-DHA, rescues the HSPC defects in apoc2 and lpl mutant zebrafish. Reduced blood cell counts are also observed in Apoc2 mutant mice at the time of weaning. These results indicate that LPL-mediated release of the essential fatty acid DHA regulates HSPC expansion and definitive hematopoiesis

    Magnetic Moments of the Baryon Decuplet in a Relativistic Quark Model

    The magnetic moments of the baryon decuplet are calculated in a relativistic constituent quark model using the light-front formalism. Of particular interest are the magnetic moments of the Ω−\Omega^- and Δ++\Delta^{++} for which new recent experimental measurements are available. Our calculation for the magnetic moment ratio μ(Δ++)/μ(p)\mu(\Delta^{++})/\mu(p) is in excellent agreement with the experimental ratio, while our ratio μ(Ω−)/μ(Λ0)\mu(\Omega^-)/\mu(\Lambda^0) is slightly higher than the experimental ratio.Comment: 10 pages ReVTeX, SLAC-PUB-621

    Multi-boson effects and the normalization of the two-pion correlation function

    The two-pion correlation function can be defined as a ratio of either the measured momentum distributions or the normalized momentum space probabilities. We show that the first alternative avoids certain ambiguities since then the normalization of the two-pion correlator contains important information on the multiplicity distribution of the event ensemble which is lost in the second alternative.
