    Unitary Fermi Gas in a Harmonic Trap

    We present an {\it ab initio} calculation of small numbers of trapped, strongly interacting fermions using the Green's Function Monte Carlo method (GFMC). The ground state energy, density profile and pairing gap are calculated for particle numbers N=2∌22N = 2 \sim 22 using the parameter-free "unitary" interaction. Trial wave functions are taken of the form of correlated pairs in a harmonic oscillator basis. We find that the lowest energies are obtained with a minimum explicit pair correlation beyond that needed to exploit the degeneracy of oscillator states. We find that energies can be well fitted by the expression aTFETF+Δmod(N,2)a_{TF} E_{TF} + \Delta {\rm mod}(N,2) where ETFE_{TF} is the Thomas-Fermi energy of a noninteracting gas in the trap and Δ\Delta is a pairing gap. There is no evidence of a shell correction energy in the systematics, but the density distributions show pronounced shell effects. We find the value Δ=0.7±0.2ω\Delta= 0.7\pm 0.2\omega for the pairing gap. This is smaller than the value found for the uniform gas at a density corresponding to the central density of the trapped gas.Comment: 2 figures, 2 table

    The decreasing returns on working time: An empirical analysis on panel country data

    An empirical analysis is conducted on two panels of 18 OECD countries to test whether the elasticity of hourly productivity to working time is negative and decreasing with working time itself. If so, the decreasing returns on working time could be indicative of a fatigue effect that increases with working time. We find that the elasticity of productivity per hour to working time is negative and decreasing with working time, but its coefficient is not strongly significant. This study offers empirical support for the hypothesis of a fatigue effect that increases with working time, but with some reservations.Productivity, Working time, decreasing returns.

    Localizing Actions from Video Labels and Pseudo-Annotations

    The goal of this paper is to determine the spatio-temporal location of actions in video. Where training from hard to obtain box annotations is the norm, we propose an intuitive and effective algorithm that localizes actions from their class label only. We are inspired by recent work showing that unsupervised action proposals selected with human point-supervision perform as well as using expensive box annotations. Rather than asking users to provide point supervision, we propose fully automatic visual cues that replace manual point annotations. We call the cues pseudo-annotations, introduce five of them, and propose a correlation metric for automatically selecting and combining them. Thorough evaluation on challenging action localization datasets shows that we reach results comparable to results with full box supervision. We also show that pseudo-annotations can be leveraged during testing to improve weakly- and strongly-supervised localizers.Comment: BMV

    A realization of the elliptic quantum algebra Uq,p(sl2^)U_{q,p}(\widehat{sl_2}) for any given level kk is constructed in terms of three free boson fields and their accompanying twisted partners. It can be viewed as the elliptic deformation of Wakimoto realization. Two screening currents are constructed; they commute or anti-commute with Uq,p(sl2^)U_{q,p}(\widehat{sl_2}) modulo total q-differences. The free fields realization for two types vertex operators nominated as the type II and the type IIII vertex operators are presented. The twisted version of the two types vertex operators are also obtained. They all play crucial roles in calculating correlation functions.Comment: 23 page

    Probing the Electrostatics of Integer Quantum Hall Edges with Momentum-Resolved Tunnel Spectroscopy

    We present measurements of momentum-resolved magneto-tunneling from a perpendicular two-dimensional (2D) contact into integer quantum Hall (QH) edges at a sharp edge potential created by cleaved edge overgrowth. Resonances in the tunnel conductance correspond to coincidences of electronic states of the QH edge and the 2D contact in energy-momentum space. With this dispersion relation reflecting the potential distribution at the edge we can directly measure the band bending at our cleaved edge under the influence of an external voltage bias. At finite bias we observe significant deviations from the flat-band condition in agreement with self-consistent calculations of the edge potential

    We re-calculate the exclusive semileptonic and nonleptonic decays of BcB_c meson to a PP-wave charmonium in terms of the improved Bethe-Salpeter (B-S) approach, which is developed recently. Here the widths for the exclusive semileptonic and nonleptonic decays, the form factors, and the charged lepton spectrums for the semileptonic decays are precisely calculated. To test the concerned approach by comparing with experimental measurements when the experimental data are available, and to have comparisons with the other approaches the results obtained by the approach and those by some approaches else as well as the original B-S approach, which appeared in literature, are comparatively presented and discussed.Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures, 3 table

    Modelling the Asymmetric Volatility in Hog Prices in Taiwan: The Impact of Joining the WTO

    Prices in the hog industry in Taiwan are determined according to an auction system. There are significant differences in hog prices before, during and after joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). The paper models growth rates and volatility in daily hog prices in Taiwan from 23 March 1999 to 30 June 2007, which enables an analysis of the effects of joining the WTO. The empirical results have significant implications for risk management and policy in the agricultural industry.     Estimation of the geophysical properties of the ocean surface using aircraft microwave measurements

    An improved model of the effects of sea state on microwave signature has been developed which incorporates the different effects of whitecaps and streaks to define the response of microwave channels to wind speed. This model has been demonstrated to agree with recent measurements. An approximation model has also been incorporated to describe the effects of precipitation on microwave radiation through a computationally rapid routine. The use of these models and a new technique to allow the selection of the most climatologically appropriate D-matrix is demonstrated in the inversion of data collected over the bering Sea. Surface wind speed agrees very well with observations while good results are obtained for integrated water vapor, and liquid water
