Implementation on a nonlinear concrete cracking algorithm in NASTRAN

    Get PDF
A computer code for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was developed using NASTRAN as a basis. Nonlinear iteration procedures were developed for obtaining solutions with a wide variety of loading sequences. A direct access file system was used to save results at each load step to restart within the solution module for further analysis. A multi-nested looping capability was implemented to control the iterations and change the loads. The basis for the analysis is a set of mutli-layer plate elements which allow local definition of materials and cracking properties

Gestalt Theory in Visual Screen Design — A New Look at an old subject

    Get PDF
Although often presented as a single basis for educational visual screen design, Gestalt theory is not a single small set of visual principles uniformly applied by all designers. In fact, it appears that instructional visual design literature often deals with only a small set of Gestalt laws. In this project Gestalt literature was consulted to distil the most relevant Gestalt laws for educational visual screen design. Eleven laws were identified. They deal with balance/symmetry, continuation, closure, figure-ground, focal point, isomorphic correspondence, prŠgnanz, proximity, similarity, simplicity, and unity/harmony. To test the usefulness of these laws in visual screen design they were applied to the redesign of an instructional multimedia application, 'WoundCare', designed to teach nursing students wound management. The basic text-based screens in the original WoundCare application were replaced with graphical user interface screens, that were designed according to these principles. The new screen designs were then evaluated by asking students and others to compare the designs. The viewers were also asked to rate directly the value of using the eleven Gestalt design principles in the redesign, both for improving the product's appearance and improving its value for learning. The evaluation results were overwhelmingly positive. Both the new design and the value of applying the eleven Gestalt laws to improve learning were strongly supported by the students' opinions. However, some differences in the value of applying particular Gestalt laws to the interface design were identified and this forms a useful direction for future research

A computational method for viscous incompressible flows

    Get PDF
An implicit, finite-difference procedure for numerically solving viscous incompressible flows is presented. The pressure-field solution is based on the pseudocompressibility method in which a time-derivative pressure term is introduced into the mass-conservation equation to form a set of hyperbolic equations. The pressure-wave propagation and the spreading of the viscous effect is investigated using simple test problems. Computed results for external and internal flows are presented to verify the present method which has proved to be very robust in simulating incompressible flows

    Exposing the dressed quark's mass

This snapshot of recent progress in hadron physics made in connection with QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations includes: a perspective on confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB); a pre'cis on the physics of in-hadron condensates; results on the hadron spectrum, including dressed-quark-core masses for the nucleon and Delta, their first radial excitations, and the parity-partners of these states; an illustration of the impact of DCSB on the electromagnetic pion form factor, thereby exemplifying how data can be used to chart the momentum-dependence of the dressed-quark mass function; and a prediction that F_1^{p,d}/F_1^{p,u} passes through zero at Q^2\approx 5m_N^2 owing to the presence of nonpointlike scalar and axial-vector diquark correlations in the nucleon.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. Phased array antenna beamforming using optical processor

    Get PDF
The feasibility of optical processor based beamforming for microwave array antennas is investigated. The primary focus is on systems utilizing the 20/30 GHz communications band and a transmit configuration exclusively to serve this band. A mathematical model is developed for computation of candidate design configurations. The model is capable of determination of the necessary design parameters required for spatial aspects of the microwave 'footprint' (beam) formation. Computed example beams transmitted from geosynchronous orbit are presented to demonstrate network capabilities. The effect of the processor on the output microwave signal to noise quality at the antenna interface is also considered

Flavor SU(4) breaking between effective couplings

    Get PDF
Using a framework in which all elements are constrained by Dyson-Schwinger equation studies in QCD, and therefore incorporates a consistent, direct and simultaneous description of light- and heavy-quarks and the states they constitute, we analyze the accuracy of SU(4)-flavor symmetry relations between {\pi}{\rho}{\pi}, K{\rho}K and D{\rho}D couplings. Such relations are widely used in phenomenological analyses of the interactions between matter and charmed mesons. We find that whilst SU(3)-flavor symmetry is accurate to 20%, SU(4) relations underestimate the D{\rho}D coupling by a factor of five.Comment: 5 pages, two figure

Axial anomaly and the delta_{LT} puzzle

The axial anomaly contribution to generalized longitudinal-transverse polarizability δLT\delta_{LT}^{} is calculated within Regge approach. It is shown that the contribution from the exchange of the a1(1260)a_1^{}(1260) Regge trajectory is nontrivial and might have the key role to explain the large difference between the predictions of chiral perturbation theory and the experimental data for the neutron δLT\delta_{LT}^{}. We also present the prediction for the proton δLT\delta_{LT}^{}, which will be measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in near future.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX, to be published in Phys. Solubility of Sulfur Dioxide in Sulfuric Acid

    Get PDF
The solubility of sulfur dioxide in 50% (wt./wt.) sulfuric acid was evaluated by regular solution theory, and the results verified by experimental measurements in the temperature range of 25 C to 70 C at pressures of 60 to 200 PSIA. The percent (wt./wt.) of sulfur dioxide in 50% (wt./wt.) sulfuric acid is given by the equation %SO2 = 2.2350 + 0.0903P - 0.00026P 10 to the 2nd power with P in PSIA
