Making (Non)Sense: On Ruth Ozeki\u27s A Tale for the Time Being
This essay investigates the knowledge produced around Ruth Ozekiās novel A Tale for the Time Being through a discussion of its marketing processes and its reception, as well as through textual analysis. I first draw upon Sau-ling Wongās observations about the problem of a US-centric referential framework in the internationalization of Asian American studies to examine a Western-centric framing in the marketing strategies of the US/Canada and the UK editions of Ozekiās novel. Next, I turn to an examination of how reviews and selected readersā responses to Ozekiās novel show an at-times incoherent process of making sense of this text. In the latter part of the paper, I analyze the parallel depictions of Fukushima and Cortes Island, Ruthās dreams, and Haruki #1ās diary in Ozekiās novel. Attending to how Ozekiās narratives destabilize the process of making sense, I argue that the novel is neither easy to read nor as transparent as the marketing strategies and reviews and readersā responses suggest. The difficulties of making sense represented in A Tale for the Time Being thereby have the potential to intervene in a Western-centric, posivistic reading of the Asian other, challenging us to rethink the analytic frameworks we bring to bear while reading Asian American literary texts
Factors That Impact Consumers' Intention to Shop on Foreign Online Stores
Cross-border e-commerce has been rapidly expanding. However, little research has been done to investigate how consumers decide to shop across national borders. This study aims to explore the factors that impact consumersā intention to shop on foreign websites. A conceptual model is developed from the perspectives of consumer perceived trust and value. We also examine the effects of vendorsā signaling on perceived trust, as well as the effects of benefits and costs on perceived value. This study conducts an online survey to test the research model. Our findings can help researchers and practitioners understand the barriers to cross-border e-commerce and devise strategies to overcome these barriers

Paxillin facilitates timely neurite initiation on soft-substrate environments by interacting with the endocytic machinery.
Neurite initiation is the first step in neuronal development and occurs spontaneously in soft tissue environments. Although the mechanisms regulating the morphology of migratory cells on rigid substrates in cell culture are widely known, how soft environments modulate neurite initiation remains elusive. Using hydrogel cultures, pharmacologic inhibition, and genetic approaches, we reveal that paxillin-linked endocytosis and adhesion are components of a bistable switch controlling neurite initiation in a substrate modulus-dependent manner. On soft substrates, most paxillin binds to endocytic factors and facilitates vesicle invagination, elevating neuritogenic Rac1 activity and expression of genes encoding the endocytic machinery. By contrast, on rigid substrates, cells develop extensive adhesions, increase RhoA activity and sequester paxillin from the endocytic machinery, thereby delaying neurite initiation. Our results highlight paxillin as a core molecule in substrate modulus-controlled morphogenesis and define a mechanism whereby neuronal cells respond to environments exhibiting varying mechanical properties
Haemophilus Aphrophilus Associated Spleen Abscess: An Unusual Presentation of Subacute Endocarditis
The HACEK group of bacteria (Haemophilus spp., Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, Kingella spp.), is uncommon pathogens of infective endocarditis, but can cause life-threatening events such as heart failure or formation of lethal emboli. Here we report a 58-year-old Asian man with a past history of congenital valvular heart disease who presented with sudden onset of left flank pain followed by fever with chills for 2 weeks. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) indicated a 1.6 cm abscess in the spleen. Culturing indicated the presence of Haemophilus aphrophilus. We diagnosed the patient with subacute endocarditis complicated with spleen abscess. The patient recovered fully after two weeks antibiotic (Ceftriaxone) treatment. Clinicians should give further attention to infective endocarditis caused by bacteria in the HACEK group in patients with metastatic infection such as spleen abscess with suspected valvular heart disease
Thoracic aorta pseudoaneurysm with hemopericardium: unusual presentation of warfarin overdose
There have been few case reports which discuss a relationship between warfarin overdose and aortic pseudoaneurysm leakage. We report the case of a female receiving warfarin who presented with dsypnea. Her international normalized ratio was > 10. Chest radiograph revealed cardiomegaly, and chest computed tomography (CT) showed a bulging pouch-like lesion below the aortic arch greater than 6x6 cm in size and a fluid collection suggesting blood in the pericardium. Thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) was successfully performed by a cardiovascular surgeon. Aortic pseudoaneurysm formation and leakage may be considered as a rare complication in patients receiving warfarin therapy. Further study regarding warfarin use and the incidence of pseudoaneurysm leakage is needed
THE COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT ELASTIC TENSION OF KINESIO TAPING ON GASTROCNEMIUS MUSCLE ACTIVATION
The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of different elastic tension of Kinesio taping on gastrocnemius muscle activation. Thirty-seven healthy athletes was recruited and randomly divided into three groups: Elastic tension 0% (N = 13), 10% (N = 12), and 20% (N = 12). All athletes were applied Kinesio taping on gastrocnemius muscle in 3 different elastic tape tensions. The wireless electromyography was used to assess the gastrocnemius muscle activation before and after applied Kinesio taping while jogging on treadmill. The results showed that a significant interaction between different elastic tape tension and pre-post taping applied (
Direct generation of intense extreme-ultraviolet supercontinuum with 35-fs, 11-mJ pulses from a femtosecond laser amplifier
We report on the generation of an intense extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) supercontinuum with photon energies spanning from 35 to 50 eV (i.e., supporting an isolated attosecond pulse with a duration of similar to 271 as) by loosely focusing 35 fs, 11 mJ pulses from a femtosecond laser amplifier into a 10-mm-long gas cell filled with krypton gas. The dramatic change in spectral and temporal properties of the driver pulses after passing through the gas cell indicates that propagation effects play a significant role in promoting the generation of the EUV supercontinuum
