Evaluating the relationship between user interaction and financial visual analysis
It has been widely accepted that interactive visualization techniques enable users to more effectively form hypotheses and identify areas for more detailed investigation. There have been numerous empirical user studies testing the effectiveness of specific visual analytical tools. However, there has been limited effort in connecting a user’s interaction with his reasoning for the purpose of extracting the relationship between the two. In this paper, we present an approach for capturing and analyzing user interactions in a financial visual analytical tool and describe an exploratory user study that examines these interaction strategies. To achieve this goal, we created two visual tools to analyze raw interaction data captured during the user session. The results of this study demonstrate one possible strategy for understanding the relationship between interaction and reasoning both operationally and strategically. Bilateral globus pallidus interna deep brain stimulation in the treatment of mixed cerebral palsy in ataxia with dyskinesia: a case report
BackgroundCerebral palsy (CP), a complex syndrome with multiple etiologies, is characterized by a range of movement disorders within the hypokinetic and hyperkinetic spectrum (dystonia or choreoathetosis). CP is often accompanied by neurological and psychiatric signs, such as spasticity, ataxia, and cognitive disorders. Although current treatment options for CP include pharmacological interventions, rehabilitation programs, and spasticity relief surgery, their effectiveness remains limited. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has demonstrated significant effectiveness in managing dyskinesia; however, its potential therapeutic effect on CP remains determined.MethodsWe present a case of a 44-year-old Asian female who was born as a twin with neonatal ischemic–hypoxic encephalopathy due to prolonged labor and delivery. She was diagnosed with CP at the age of 1 year. The patient exhibited delayed development compared to her peers and presented with various symptoms, including slurred speech, broad-based gait, horseshoe inversion of the right lower extremity, involuntary shaking of the upper extremities bilaterally, and hypotonia and showed no improvement with levodopa therapy. Two years ago, she developed progressive head tremors, which worsened during periods of tension and improved during sleep. As medical treatments proved ineffective and there were no contraindications to surgery, we performed bilateral globus pallidus interna DBS (GPi-DBS) to alleviate her motor dysfunction.ResultsFollowing a 6-month follow-up, the patient demonstrated significant improvements in motor symptoms, including head and limb tremors and dystonia. In addition, significant improvement was observed in her overall psychological well-being, as evidenced by reduced anxiety and depression levels.ConclusionDBS is an effective treatment for dyskinesia symptoms associated with CP in adults. Moreover, its effectiveness may continue to increase over time
SDSS J013127.34032100.1: A newly discovered radio-loud quasar at with extremely high luminosity
Only very few z>5 quasars discovered to date are radio-loud, with a
radio-to-optical flux ratio (radio-loudness parameter) higher than 10. Here we
report the discovery of an optically luminous radio-loud quasar, SDSS
J013127.34-032100.1 (J0131-0321 in short), at z=5.18+-0.01 using the Lijiang
2.4m and Magellan telescopes. J0131-0321 has a spectral energy distribution
consistent with that of radio-loud quasars. With an i-band magnitude of 18.47
and radio flux density of 33 mJy, its radio-loudness parameter is ~100. The
optical and near-infrared spectra taken by Magellan enable us to estimate its
bolometric luminosity to be L_bol ~ 1.1E48 erg/s, approximately 4.5 times
greater than that of the most distant quasar known to date. The black hole mass
of J0131-0321 is estimated to be 2.7E9 solar masses, with an uncertainty up to
0.4 dex. Detailed physical properties of this high-redshift, radio-loud,
potentially super-Eddington quasar can be probed in the future with more
dedicated and intensive follow-up observations using multi-wavelength

An Early Diagnosis of Oral Cancer based on Three-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks
Three-dimensional convolutional neural networks (3DCNNs), a rapidly evolving modality of deep learning, has gained popularity in many fields. For oral cancers, CT images are traditionally processed using two-dimensional input, without considering information between lesion slices. In this paper, we established a 3DCNNs-based image processing algorithm for the early diagnosis of oral cancers, which was compared with a 2DCNNs-based algorithm. The 3D and 2D CNNs were constructed using the same hierarchical structure to profile oral tumors as benign or malignant. Our results showed that 3DCNNs with dynamic characteristics of the enhancement rate image performed better than 2DCNNS with single enhancement sequence for the discrimination of oral cancer lesions. Our data indicate that spatial features and spatial dynamics extracted from 3DCNNs may inform future design of CT-assisted diagnosis system
Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Analysis of SnRK2 Gene Family in Dormant Vegetative Buds of Liriodendron chinense in Response to Abscisic Acid, Chilling, and Photoperiod
Protein kinases play an essential role in plants’ responses to environmental stress signals.
SnRK2 (sucrose non-fermenting 1-related protein kinase 2) is a plant-specific protein kinase that
plays a crucial role in abscisic acid and abiotic stress responses in some model plant species. In
apple, corn, rice, pepper, grapevine, Arabidopsis thaliana, potato, and tomato, a genome-wide study of
the SnRK2 protein family was performed earlier. The genome-wide comprehensive investigation
was first revealed to categorize the SnRK2 genes in the Liriodendron chinense (L. chinense). The five
SnRK2 genes found in the L. chinense genome were highlighted in this study. The structural gene
variants, 3D structure, chromosomal distributions, motif analysis, phylogeny, subcellular localization,
cis-regulatory elements, expression profiles in dormant buds, and photoperiod and chilling responses
were all investigated in this research. The five SnRK2 genes from L. chinense were grouped into groups
(I–IV) based on phylogeny analysis, with three being closely related to other species. Five hormones-,
six stress-, two growths and biological process-, and two metabolic-related responsive elements were
discovered by studying the cis-elements in the promoters. According to the expression analyses, all
five genes were up- and down-regulated in response to abscisic acid (ABA), photoperiod, chilling,
and chilling, as well as photoperiod treatments. Our findings gave insight into the SnRK2 family
genes in L. chinense and opened up new study options
Cell-Free DNA Sequencing of Intraocular Fluid as Liquid Biopsy in the Diagnosis of Vitreoretinal Lymphoma
PurposeTo seek novel diagnostic approaches, we improved the workflow of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) sequencing and evaluated its feasibility in vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) specimens; the profile of mutations was preliminarily analyzed for potential diagnostic value.MethodsThe study was a diagnostic trial. 23 eyes of 23 patients with VRL and 25 eyes of 25 patients with inflammatory eye diseases were enrolled. Approximate 500μl undiluted vitreous humor and 10ml diluted vitreous fluid was obtained through diagnostic vitrectomy and sent for cytopathological examinations. 500μl of the diluted vitreous fluid was spared for cfDNA sequencing. For cfDNA sequencing, DNA fragmentation procedure was added to the workflow to improve the extraction efficiency; mutations detected were analyzed for potential diagnostic model. The sensitivity and specificity of the cytopathology and cfDNA sequencing were compared. The clinical manifestations were preliminarily analyzed for potential correlations with the genotypes.ResultsCfDNA sequencing was accomplished in 23 eyes with VRL and 20 eyes with inflammatory eye diseases. VRL-related mutated genes included MYD88 (18 eyes, 78%), ETV6 (11 eyes, 48%), PIM1 (11 eyes,48%), BTG2 (7 eyes, 30%), IRF4 (7 eyes, 30%), CD79B (6 eyes, 26%), LRP1B (6 eyes, 26%), etc. Logistic regression based on the mutations of MYD88 and ETV6 was of the potential for the diagnosis of VRL (P<0.001, adjusted R2 = 0.789, sensitivity 0.913, specificity 0.950); by comparison, the sensitivity and specificity of the vitreous cytopathology were 0.826 and 1.000, respectively. Further analysis of the mutation profile showed that patients carrying CD79B mutation tended to have higher intraocular interleukin-10 level (P=0.030), that CARD11 mutation was correlated with younger age at ocular onset (P=0.039), and that patients with intracranial involvement carried more multiple-site mutations in the BTG2 gene (P=0.013).ConclusionsThe improved workflow of CfDNA sequencing is of sound feasibility in a limited amount of vitreous humor. The logistic model based on the mutations could help to provide reliable clues for the diagnosis of VRL
The physical constraints on a new LoBAL QSO at z=4.82
Very few low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) QSOs have been found at
high redshifts to date. One high-redshift LoBAL QSO, J0122+1216, was recently
discovered at the Lijiang 2.4-m Telescope with an initial redshift
determination of 4.76. Aiming to investigate its physical properties, we
carried out follow-up observations in the optical and near-IR spectroscopy.
Near-IR spectra from UKIRT and P200 confirms that it is a LoBAL, with a new
redshift determination of based on the \mgii~ emission-line. The
new \mgii~ redshift determination reveals strong blueshifts and asymmetry of
the high-ionization emission lines. We estimated a black hole mass of and Eddington ratio of according to the
empirical \mgii-based single-epoch relation and bolometric correction factor.
It is possible that strong outflows are the result of an extreme quasar
environment driven by the high Eddington ratio. A lower limit on the outflowing
kinetic power () was derived from both emission and absorption
lines, indicating these outflows play a significant role in the feedback
process to regulate the growth of its black hole as well as host galaxy
