An in vitro investigation into the pigmentary phenotype of melanocytes and keratinocyte co-cultures to improve wound healing

    Get PDF
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references. On healing, partial-thickness burn wounds usually result in depigmentation of the skin. This is due to the loss of melanocytes. The lack of pigmentation in the healed wound is particularly prominent in dark-skinned individuals and could result in serious psychosocial consequences such as low self-esteem, stigmatisation and discrimination among sufferers. Methods aimed at investigating rapid and efficient repigmentation in wounded skin are therefore pertinent. The aims of this study were two-fold: i) To promote melanin synthesis in human skin cells using different ratios of human melanocytes (Mc) to keratinocytes (Kc) in an in vitro co-culture system, in order to ensure pigmentation of the skin and, ii) To understand cellular mechanisms that contribute basic scientific knowledge towards clinically improved wound healing

Discrete Frequency Selection of Frame-Based Stochastic Real-Time Tasks

Energy-efficient real-time task scheduling has been actively explored in the past decade. Different from the past work, this paper considers schedulability conditions for stochastic real-time tasks. A schedulability condition is first presented for frame-based stochastic real-time tasks, and several algorithms are also examined to check the schedulability of a given strategy. An approach is then proposed based on the schedulability condition to adapt a continuous-speed-based method to a discrete-speed system. The approach is able to stay as close as possible to the continuous-speed-based method, but still guaranteeing the schedulability. It is shown by simulations that the energy saving can be more than 20% for some system configurationsComment: 10 page

    Pentacene-Based Thin-Film Transistors With a Solution-Process Hafnium Oxide Insulator

    Get PDF
Abstract—Pentacene-based organic thin-film transistors with solution-process hafnium oxide (HfOx) as gate insulating layer have been demonstrated. The solution-process HfOx could not only exhibit a high-permittivity (κ = 11) dielectric constant but also has good dielectric strength. Moreover, the root-mean-square surface roughness and surface energy (γs) on the surface of the HfOx layer were 1.304 nm and 34.24 mJ/cm2, respectively. The smooth, as well as hydrophobic, surface of HfOx could facilitate the direct deposition of the pentacene film without an additional polymer treatment layer, leading to a high field-effect mobility of 3.8 cm2/(V · s). Index Terms—Hafnium oxide, high permittivity, organic thinfilm transistor (OTFT), solution process, surface energy

Drivers of eHealth Adoption: Linking eHealth Adoption to Service Concept

    Get PDF
Researchers and practitioners are keenly interested in understanding what drives eHealth adoption in recent years. This is largely because, while eHealth can lead to cost-effective and quality health care, the actual adoption rate of eHealth remains low across countries. In prior literature, it was clearly indicated that well-designed eHealth services are critical to eHealth adoption. In this study, our findings further show that, what may motivate patients’ adoption is more strongly associated with the design of eHealth caring service, and the design of eHealth IT service is more likely to be associated with patients’ continual use

Applying Information Integration Theory on the Modeling of Price Forecasting – An Example of Online Trading on Ebay

Because of the booming of internet technology and the great promotion internet portal, on-line exchange is more popular in the recent years. This study attempts to integrate concepts of Information Integrate Theory; Anchoring and Adjustment Method to explore the buyer’s trade behavior between two different cultures. After observing the historical data on Yahoo’s Taiwan and Yahoo’s America, the anchoring effect and order effect during the process of a C2C auction is proposed in this study. Chinese buyers seem willing to pay much their attention on pricing during the whole process of an auction than American people do. But, the same phenomenon does exist for American doing a bid on a higher-priced luxury commodity. It sounds for a luxury product, there is a common pricing strategy existed between people of two different cultures. The results provide a very promised direction for knowledge capture and decision analysis for trading, and more works for data mining on pricing for different commodities, cultures, or other kinds of variables related to products and members of market might be a possible future approach for building a knowledge management system for a pricing mechanism for the market

The Non-linear Relationship between Muscle Voluntary Activation Level and Voluntary Force Measured by the Interpolated Twitch Technique

    Get PDF
Interpolated twitch technique (ITT) is a non-invasive method for assessing the completeness of muscle activation in clinical settings. Voluntary activation level (VA), measured by ITT and estimated by a conventional linear model, was reported to have a non-linear relationship with true voluntary contraction force at higher activation levels. The relationship needs to be further clarified for the correct use by clinicians and researchers. This study was to established a modified voluntary activation (modified VA) and define a valid range by fitting a non-linear logistic growth model. Eight healthy male adults participated in this study. Each subject performed three sets of voluntary isometric ankle plantar flexions at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) with real-time feedback on a computer screen. A supramaximal electrical stimulation was applied on tibia nerve at rest and during contractions. The estimated VA was calculated for each contraction. The relationship between the estimated VA and the actual voluntary contraction force was fitted by a logistic growth model. The result showed that according to the upper and lower limit points of the logistic curve, the valid range was between the 95.16% and 10.55% MVC. The modified VA estimated by this logistic growth model demonstrated less error than the conventional model. This study provided a transfer function for the voluntary activation level and defined the valid range which would provide useful information in clinical applications

In the crystal structure of the title molecule, C13H14N4, the two pyridyl rings are not coplanar but twisted about the C—N bond with an interplanar angle of 71.1 (1)°. In the crystal, the molecules form dimers, situated on crystallographic centres of inversion, which are connected via a pair of N—H⋯N hydrogen bonds. C—H⋯π-electron ring interactions are also present in the crystal structure. The title molecule adopts an s–cis–anti–s–cis conformation in the solid state

Construction and Characterization of Insect Cell-Derived Influenza VLP: Cell Binding, Fusion, and EGFP Incorporation

We have constructed virus-like particles (VLPs) harboring hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), matrix protein 1 (M1) ,and proton channel protein (M2) using baculovirus as a vector in the SF9 insect cell. The size of the expressed VLP was estimated to be ~100 nm by light scattering experiment and transmission electron microscopy. Recognition of HA on the VLP surface by the HA2-specific monoclonal antibody IIF4 at acidic pH, as probed by surface plasmon resonance, indicated the pH-induced structural rearrangement of HA. Uptake of the particle by A549 mediated by HA-sialylose receptor interaction was visualized by the fluorescent-labeled VLP. The HA-promoted cell-virus fusion activity was illustrated by fluorescence imaging on the Jurkat cells incubated with rhodamine-loaded VLP performed at fusogenic pH. Furthermore, the green fluorescence protein (GFP) was fused to NA to produce VLP with a pH-sensitive probe, expanding the use of VLP as an antigen carrier and a tool for viral tracking
