Dependence of GCRs influx on the Solar North-South Asymmetry
We investigate the dependence of the amount of the observed galactic cosmic
ray (GCR) influx on the solar North-South asymmetry using the neutron count
rates obtained from four stations and sunspot data in archives spanning six
solar cycles from 1953 to 2008. We find that the observed GCR influxes at
Moscow, Kiel, Climax and Huancayo stations are more suppressed when the solar
activity in the southern hemisphere is dominant compared with when the solar
activity in the northern hemisphere is dominant. Its reduction rates at four
stations are all larger than those of the suppression due to other factors
including the solar polarity effect on the GCR influx. We perform the student's
t-test to see how significant these suppressions are. It is found that
suppressions due to the solar North-South asymmetry as well as the solar
polarity are significant and yet the suppressions associated with the former
are larger and more significant.Comment: 17 pages, 3figures, accepted to JAST

The Spitzer C2D Survey of Nearby Dense Cores: Jet and Molecular Outflow Associated With A Young Stellar Object in Core A of L1251
A long infrared jet has been discovered by the Spitzer c2d Legacy Program in core A of L1251. It is associated with a very embedded Class 0 object with an accretion luminosity of about 0.9 L(circle dot) derived by radiative transfer model fitting to the observed spectral energy distribution. Comparing the observed Infrared Array Camera colors along the infrared jet with those calculated from a model of an admixture of gas with a power-law temperature distribution indicates that the jet is possibly created by a paraboloidal bow shock propagating into the ambient medium of n(H(2)) = 10(5) cm(-3). In addition, the variation of the power-law index along the jet suggests that the portion of hot gas decreases with distance from the jet engine. The molecular outflow in this region has been mapped for the first time using CO data. From the calculated outflow momentum flux, a very strong lower limit to the average accretion luminosity is 3.6 sin i/cos(3) i L(circle dot), indicative of a decrease in the accretion rate with time.Korean government (MEST) 2009-0062865NRF R01-2007-000-20336-0NASA 1407, 1224608Astronom
The Practice of Korean Medicine: An Overview of Clinical Trials in Acupuncture
Acupuncture, one of the Oriental medical therapeutic techniques that can be traced back at least 2500 years, is growing in popularity all over the world. Korea has continued to develop its own unique tradition of medicine throughout its long history, and has formed different types of acupuncture methods. The purpose of this review is to summarize clinical case studies in acupuncture and related therapies, such as acupressure, electric acupuncture, auricular acupuncture and moxibustion in Korea. A survey of Korean journals revealed that a total of 124 studies were published from 1983 to 2001. Results obtained from the survey showed that most clinical studies using acupuncture, electric acupuncture, moxibustion and other traditional therapies could alleviate a relatively broad range of medical problems. However, it should be emphasized that almost all clinical case studies published in various local journals did not follow the βgood clinical practiceβ with respect to regulatory aspects. Since they were not conducted using the randomized double-blinded controls with a large sample size, all the results should be considered as therapeutic indications. This review is an attempt to show the scope of acupuncture in our country and the kind of diseases, after many years of clinical experience, that were deemed valid targets for clinical trials
Currents, Eddies, and a Fish Story in the Southwestern Japan/East Sea
As part of the Japan/East Sea (JES) initiative supported by the U.S. Office of Naval Research, we conducted an observational experiment to understand the physics of the mesoscale circulation in the Ulleung Basin, located in the southwestern corner of the JES. The current passing through the Korea Strait divides upon entering the JES, with portions of the current flowing along the Korean and Japanese coasts. The variability of these currents is especially energetic in our study region. Our objectives were to measure the time-varying currents in the upper and deep levels of the JES. We relate the population density of vertically migrating fish or squid to the time-varying locations of fronts
Spontaneous Concomitant Intracranial and Spinal Subdural Hematomas in Association with Anticoagulation Therapy
Simultaneous intracranial and spinal subdural hematomas are extremely rare. In most cases, they are attributed to major or minor trauma and iatrogenic causes, such as those resulting from spinal puncture. To the best of the authors' knowledge, there has been only two reports of spontaneous concomitant intracranial and spinal subdural hematomas in a patient receiving anticoagulant therapy who had an absence of evident trauma history. We report on a case of spontaneous concomitant intracranial and spinal subdural hematomas that occurred in association with anticoagulant therapy and present a review of the relevant literature
Recurrent Uterine Cervical Carcinoma: Spectrum of Imaging Findings
Uterine cervical carcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors occurring in females. After primary treatment, patients are usually followed up with CT or MRI and the findings of these modalities may be the first sign of recurrent disease. Because earlier additional treatment by chemotherapy or radiation therapy may improve the prognosis, the early detection of recurrent cervical carcinoma is clinically important. In this article, we review the CT and MR imaging findings of recurrent uterine cervical carcinoma, and assign them to one of four groups: a) recurrence at the primary site, involving the intrapelvic organs, b) extension to the pelvic side-wall, c) metastases to pelvic and extrapelvic lymph nodes, or d) metastases to distant organs. A further contribution of CT and MR imaging is the detection of hydronephrosis due to ureteral obstruction. The cases in each group are illustrated and discussed, and since an awareness of the spectrum of imaging findings of recurrent cervical carcinoma is likely to lead to its early detection, radiologists should be familiar with the information presented
A Comparison of the Intrinsic Shapes of Two Different Types of Dwarf Galaxies: Blues Compact Dwarfs and Dwarf Ellipticals
We measure the apparent shapes for a sample of 62 blue compact dwarf galaxies
(BCDs), and compare them with the apparent shapes for a sample of 80 dwarf
elliptical galaxies (dEs). The BCDs are flatter, on average, than the dEs, but
the difference is only marginally significant. We then use both non-parametric
and parametric techniques to determine possible distributions of intrinsic
shapes for the BCDs. The hypothesis that BCDs are oblate spheroids can be ruled
out with a high confidence level (), but the hypothesis that they are
prolate spheroids cannot be excluded. The apparent shapes of BCDs are totally
consistent with the hypothesis that they are triaxial ellipsoids. If the
intrinsic axis ratios, and , are distributed according to a
Gaussian with means and and standard deviation ,
we find the best-fitting distribution for BCDs has , while that for dEs has . Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that BCDs
have a close evolutionary relation with dEs.Comment: total 23 pages, 9 figures, and 1 Table, submitted to ApJ on Sep 19
