Possible structure in the cosmic ray electron spectrum measured by the ATIC-2 and ATIC-4 experiments

    Get PDF
A strong excess in a form of a wide peak in the energy range of 300-800 GeV was discovered in the first measurements of the electron spectrum in the energy range from 20 GeV to 3 TeV by the balloon-borne experiment ATIC (J. Chang et al. Nature, 2008). The experimental data processing and analysis of the electron spectrum with different criteria for selection of electrons, completely independent of the results reported in (J. Chang et al. Nature, 2008) is employed in the present paper. The new independent analysis generally confirms the results of (J. Chang et al. Nature, 2008), but shows that the spectrum in the region of the excess is represented by a number of narrow peaks. The measured spectrum is compared to the spectrum of (J. Chang et al. Nature, 2008) and to the spectrum of the Fermi/LAT experiment.Comment: LaTeX2e, 10 pages, 4 figures, a paper for ECRS 2010 (Turku, Finland); http://www.astrophys-space-sci-trans.net/7/119/2011

Diffusion coefficient and shear viscosity of rigid water models

We report the diffusion coefficient and viscosity of popular rigid water models: Two non polarizable ones (SPC/E with 3 sites, and TIP4P/2005 with 4 sites) and a polarizable one (Dang-Chang, 4 sites). We exploit the dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the system size [Yeh and Hummer, J. Phys. Chem. B 108, 15873 (2004)] to obtain the size-independent value. This also provides an estimate of the viscosity of all water models, which we compare to the Green-Kubo result. In all cases, a good agreement is found. The TIP4P/2005 model is in better agreement with the experimental data for both diffusion and viscosity. The SPC/E and Dang-Chang water overestimate the diffusion coefficient and underestimate the viscosity.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. To be published in J. Phys.: Condens. Matte

On Congruences with Products of Variables from Short Intervals and Applications

We obtain upper bounds on the number of solutions to congruences of the type (x1+s)...(xν+s)(y1+s)...(yν+s)≢0(modp) (x_1+s)...(x_{\nu}+s)\equiv (y_1+s)...(y_{\nu}+s)\not\equiv0 \pmod p modulo a prime pp with variables from some short intervals. We give some applications of our results and in particular improve several recent estimates of J. Cilleruelo and M. Z. Garaev on exponential congruences and on cardinalities of products of short intervals, some double character sum estimates of J. B. Friedlander and H. Iwaniec and some results of M.-C. Chang and A. A. Karatsuba on character sums twisted with the divisor function

    On low-dimensional cancellation problems

A well-known cancellation problem of Zariski asks when, for two given domains (fields) K1 and K2 over a field k, a k-isomorphism of K1 [t] (K1 (t)) and K2 [t] (K2 (t)) implies a k-isomorphism of K1 and K2. The main results of this article give affirmative answer to the two low-dimensional cases of this problem:. 1. Let K be an affine field over an algebraically closed field k of any characteristic. SupposeK (t) ≃ k (t1, t2, t3), thenK ≃ k (t1, t2) . 2. Let M be a 3-dimensional affine algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field k of any characteristic. LetA = K [x, y, z, w] / M be the coordinate ring of M. SupposeA [t] ≃ k [x1, x2, x3, x4], thenfrac (A) ≃ k (x1, x2, x3), wherefrac (A) is the field of fractions of A. In the case of zero characteristic these results were obtained by Kang in [Ming-chang Kang, A note on the birational cancellation problem, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 77 (1992) 141-154; Ming-chang Kang, The cancellation problem, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 47 (1987) 165-171]. However, the case of finite characteristic is first settled in this article, that answered the questions proposed by Kang in [Ming-chang Kang, A note on the birational cancellation problem, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 77 (1992) 141-154; Ming-chang Kang, The cancellation problem, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 47 (1987) 165-171]. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.preprin

Magnetic field-induced soft mode in spin-gapped high-Tc superconductors

We present an explanation of the dynamical in-gap spin mode in LSCO induced by an applied magnetic field H as recently observed by J. Chang et al. Our model consists of a phenomenological spin-only Hamiltonian, and the softening of the spin mode is caused by vortex pinning of dynamical stripe fluctuations which we model by a local ordering of the exchange interactions. The spin gap vanishes experimentally around H=7T which in our scenario corresponds to the field required for overlapping vortex regions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 fig

    Multiparameter Riesz Commutators

It is shown that product BMO of Chang and Fefferman, defined on the product of Euclidean spaces can be characterized by the multiparameter commutators of Riesz transforms. This extends a classical one-parameter result of Coifman, Rochberg, and Weiss, and at the same time extends the work of Lacey and Ferguson and Lacey and Terwilleger on multiparameter commutators with Hilbert transforms. The method of proof requires the real-variable methods throughout, which is new in the multi-parameter context.Comment: 38 Pages. References updated. To appear in American J Mat
