Facebook Uses, Boundary Spanning Activities, and Social Capital
The goal of this paper is to examine whether the use of Facebook in the workplace impacts on employeesā boundary spanning activities (BSA) and social capital. Two types of social capital are examined: bonding and bridging. The sample consisted of 399 full-time white-collar workers in Taiwan. A snowball sampling technique was used to recruit participants to complete an online survey. The results indicated that employees who are allowed to use Facebook in the workplace did not have a higher level of overall BSA than the non-user group. In terms of the associations between Facebook use and social capital, the Facebook user group did not have a higher level of bonding social capital than the non-user group, but they did have a higher level of bridging social capital than the non-user group. In terms of the associations between BSA and social capital, the correlation results indicated positive significant relations between BSA and bonding social capital, and between BSA and bridging social capital
Social networking friendships: A cross-cultural comparison of network structure between MySpace and Wretch
A cross-cultural comparison of social networking friendship between MySpace (in USA) and Wretch (in Taiwan) was conducted utilizing the high- and low-context framework proposed by Edward T. Hall (1976). Three network indicators were used to describe the network structure of both social network sites: size, density, and heterogeneity. Data were drawn from the forum āJobs, Work, Careersā on MySpace and āJob-Relatedā on Wretch over a 2-month period from mid-October to mid-December in 2007. For each of the 2 sites, 6 users (3 men and 3 women) were randomly selected as sources or āseedsā from which to crawl the friendship networks. From the 6 seed users, a snowball sample was constructed by crawling 2 degrees out along the networks. The results indicated that Wretch, although it followed the expected direction predicted by Hallās model, did not have significantly larger and denser networks than MySpace. Finally, no differences in same-sex and cross-sex friendships were found between the 2 sites either. The overall findings are discussed with implications for future studies
An efficient iterative CBCT reconstruction approach using gradient projection sparse reconstruction algorithm
The purpose of this study is to develop a fast and convergence proofed CBCT reconstruction framework based on the compressed sensing theory which not only lowers the imaging dose but also is computationally practicable in the busy clinic. We simplified the original mathematical formulation of gradient projection for sparse reconstruction (GPSR) to minimize the number of forward and backward projections for line search processes at each iteration. GPSR based algorithms generally showed improved image quality over the FDK algorithm especially when only a small number of projection data were available. When there were only 40 projections from 360 degree fan beam geometry, the quality of GPSR based algorithms surpassed FDK algorithm within 10 iterations in terms of the mean squared relative error. Our proposed GPSR algorithm converged as fast as the conventional GPSR with a reasonably low computational complexity. The outcomes demonstrate that the proposed GPSR algorithm is attractive for use in real time applications such as on-line IGRT
Chip Implementation with a Combined Wireless Temperature Sensor and Reference Devices Based on the DZTC Principle
This paper presents a novel CMOS wireless temperature sensor design in order to improve the sensitivity and linearity of our previous work on such devices. Based on the principle of CMOS double zero temperature coefficient (DZTC) points, a combined device is first created at the chip level with two voltage references, one current reference, and one temperature sensor. It was successfully fabricated using the 0.35 Ī¼m CMOS process. According to the chip results in a wide temperature range from ā20 Ā°C to 120 Ā°C, two voltage references can provide temperature-stable outputs of 823 mV and 1,265 mV with maximum deviations of 0.2 mV and 8.9 mV, respectively. The result for the current reference gives a measurement of 23.5 Ī¼A, with a maximum deviation of 1.2 Ī¼A. The measurements also show that the wireless temperature sensor has good sensitivity of 9.55 mV/Ā°C and high linearity of 97%. The proposed temperature sensor has 4.15-times better sensitivity than the previous design. Moreover, to facilitate temperature data collection, standard wireless data transmission is chosen; therefore, an 8-bit successive-approximation-register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a 433 MHz wireless transmitter are also integrated in this chip. Sensing data from different places can be collected remotely avoiding the need for complex wire lines
Is gender dysphoria associated with increased hospital cost per stay among patients hospitalized for depression? Focus on the racial and regional variance in US hospitals
IntroductionIndividuals with gender dysphoria do not identify with their sex assigned at birth and face societal and cultural challenges, leading to increased risk for depression, anxiety, and suicide. Gender dysphoria is a DSM-5 diagnosis but is not necessary for transition therapy. Additionally, individuals with gender dysphoria or who identify as gender diverse/nonconforming may experience āminority stressā from increased discrimination, leading to a greater risk for mental health problems. This study aimed to identify possible health disparities in patients hospitalized for depression with gender dysphoria across the United States. Depression was selected because patients with gender dysphoria are at an increased risk for it. Various patient and hospital-related factors are explored for their association with changes in healthcare utilization for patients hospitalized with depression.MethodsThe National Inpatient Sample was used to identify nationwide patients with depression (nā=ā378,552, weighted nā=ā1,892,760) from 2016 to 2019. We then examined the characteristics of the study sample and investigated how individualsā gender dysphoria was associated with healthcare utilization measured by hospital cost per stay. Multivariate survey regression models were used to identify predictors.ResultsAmong the 1,892,760 total depression inpatient samples, 14,145 (0.7%) patients had gender dysphoria (per ICD-10 codes). Over the study periods, depression inpatients with gender dysphoria increased, but total depression inpatient rates remained stable. Survey regression results suggested that gender dysphoria, minority ethnicity or race, female sex assigned at birth, older ages, and specific hospital regions were associated with higher hospital cost per stay than their reference groups. Sub-group analysis showed that the trend was similar in most racial and regional groups.ConclusionDifferences in hospital cost per stay for depression inpatients with gender dysphoria exemplify how this community has been disproportionally affected by racial and regional biases, insurance denials, and economic disadvantages. Financial concerns can stop individuals from accessing gender-affirming care and risk more significant mental health problems. Increased complexity and comorbidity are associated with hospital cost per stay and add to the cycle

Sialylation of vasorin by ST3Gal1 facilitates TGF-Ī²1-mediated tumor angiogenesis and progression.
ST3Gal1 is a key sialyltransferase which adds Ī±2,3-linked sialic acid to substrates and generates core 1 O-glycan structure. Upregulation of ST3Gal1 has been associated with worse prognosis of breast cancer patients. However, the protein substrates of ST3Gal1 implicated in tumor progression remain elusive. In our study, we demonstrated that ST3GAL1-silencing significantly reduced tumor growth along with a notable decrease in vascularity of MCF7 xenograft tumors. We identified vasorin (VASN) which was shown to bind TGF-Ī²1, as a potential candidate that links ST3Gal1 to angiogenesis. LC-MS/MS analysis of VASN secreted from MCF7, revealed that more than 80% of its O-glycans are sialyl-3T and disialyl-T. ST3GAL1-silencing or desialylation of VASN by neuraminidase enhanced its binding to TGF-Ī²1 by 2- to 3-fold and thereby dampening TGF-Ī²1 signaling and angiogenesis, as indicated by impaired tube formation of HUVECs, suppressed angiogenesis gene expression and reduced activation of Smad2 and Smad3 in HUVEC cells. Examination of 114 fresh primary breast cancer and their adjacent normal tissues showed that the expression levels of ST3Gal1 and TGFB1 were high in tumor part and the expression of two genes was positively correlated. Kaplan Meier survival analysis showed a significantly shorter relapse-free survival for those with lower expression VASN, notably, the combination of low VASN with high ST3GAL1 yielded even higher risk of recurrence (p = 0.025, HR = 2.967, 95% CI = 1.14-7.67). Since TGF-Ī²1 is known to transcriptionally activate ST3Gal1, our findings illustrated a feedback regulatory loop in which TGF-Ī²1 upregulates ST3Gal1 to circumvent the negative impact of VASN
