Klebsiella Sepsis in a Premature Baby(SNUCH CPC-45)
(Clinicopathologic conference)
This male baby was born to a 39 year old mother via Caesarian section because of breech presentation and premature rupture of the membrane. The gestation period was 30weeks and the birth weight was 1200gm. The mother had had 3 spontaneous abortions and
4 therapeutic abortions. During this pregnancy she suffered from a severe toxemia of pregnancy
for which she received magnesium
sulfate and hydralazine.
The immediate postnatal activity of the baby was fair although Moro and sucking reflexes were poor. Apgar scores at 1 minute and 5 minutes were 3 and 7,respectively. The muscle tone was very poor and he was slightly cyanotic. Because of respiratory difficulty the baby was intubated and intermittent positive pressure breathing was applied
USCID fourth international conference
Presented at the Role of irrigation and drainage in a sustainable future: USCID fourth international conference on irrigation and drainage on October 3-6, 2007 in Sacramento, California. In addition to increasingly frequent water shortage problems, agricultural water sector is also challenged by environmental issues. The objective of this article is to summarize, as well as propose sustainable strategies for agricultural sector in response to current environmental challenges. For water shortage problems, which are becoming more and more frequent worldwide including Taiwan, measures for irrigation water, such as extending irrigation periods, decreasing number of irrigation application times, or rotational irrigation, are introduced and discussed. When borrowing or transfer of water among sectors is needed in Taiwan, it is usually from agricultural irrigation water to other sectors in almost all cases. The maintenance of water right, and compensation to farmers for their income loss, are the two major issues. As for environmental changes, the impact of the accession of Taiwan to WTO (World Trade Organization) is discussed specifically in this article, and a management scheme in order to save irrigation water, which could be used for other purposes, is suggested in this article
Establishment, Regeneration, and Succession of Korean Red Pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) Forest in Korea
Seed production of Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc.) was ranging from 25 to 27 seeds/m2 with a viability averaging between 42 and 44%. Seed dispersal reaches about 80 m. Germination rate of seed varied from 19 to 90%, and survival rate of seedling varied from 0 to 30% depending on moisture condition in field experiment. Survivorship curve of the pine population showed type III. Species composition of the pine forest was characterized by possessing plants with resistant capacity to water deficit such as Rhododendron micranthum, Vaccinium hirtum var. koreanum, Spodiopogon sibiricus, and Lespedeza cyrtobotrya. Ecological longevity of the pine was about 140 years based on mean age of gap makers. Natural maintenance of the pine forest depended on disturbance regime, which is dominated by endogenous factor. Natural regeneration of the pine forest is possible only in a very restricted site such as ridgetop with thin and infertile soil condition. Therefore, active and systematic management is required for artificial regeneration of the forest as is known in silivicultural method. Pine gall midge damage accelerated succession of the pine forest to the deciduous broadleaved forest dominated by oak except on the ridgetop where the forest can be maintained naturally
Hemorrhagic Transformation of Ischemic Stroke: Severe Complications of Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis
Ischemic stroke is a common complication of infective endocarditis (IE), occurring in 20-40% of left side IE cases. In these subsets, anticoagulation therapy may provoke hemorrhagic transformation (HT) of ischemic stroke, and complications of this magnitude deteriorate the clinical course for IE patients. However, in cases of IE complicated with a mechanical prosthetic valve, the physician can be concerned over the maintenance of anticoagulation due to the risk of thrombotic complication. According to our retrospective review, HT of ischemic stroke in prosthetic valve endocarditis occurred 13.8% (4/29) of the time in a variety of situations. Some of these even arose in patients with a subtherapeutic range of prothrombin time
