Emergence of nanoscale inhomogeneity in the superconducting state of a homogeneously disordered conventional superconductor, NbN
The notion of spontaneous formation of an inhomogeneous superconducting state
is at the heart of most theories attempting to understand the superconducting
state in the presence of strong disorder. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy
and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, we
experimentally demonstrate that under the competing effects of strong
homogeneous disorder and superconducting correlations, the superconducting
state of a conventional superconductor, NbN, spontaneously segregates into
domains. Tracking these domains as a function of temperature we observe that
the superconducting domains persist across the bulk superconducting transition,
Tc, and disappear close to the pseudogap temperature, T*, where signatures of
superconducting correlations disappear from the tunneling spectrum and the
superfluid response of the system
Simulations of a weakly conducting droplet under the influence of an alternating electric field
We investigate the electrohydrodynamics of an initially spherical droplet
under the influence of an external alternating electric field by conducting
axisymmetric numerical simulations using a charge-conservative volume-of-fluid
based finite volume flow solver. The mean amplitude of shape oscillations of a
droplet subjected to an alternating electric field for leaky dielectric fluids
is the same as the steady-state deformation under an equivalent root mean
squared direct electric field for all possible electrical conductivity ratio
and permittivity ratio of the droplet to the surrounding fluid.
In contrast, our simulations for weakly conducting media show that this
equivalence between alternating and direct electric fields does not hold for
. Moreover, for a range of parameters, the deformation obtained
using the alternating and direct electric fields is qualitatively different,
i.e. for low and high , the droplet becomes prolate under alternating
electric field but deforms to an oblate shape in the case of the equivalent
direct electric field. A parametric study is conducted by varying the time
period of the applied alternating electric field, the permittivity and the
electrical conductivity ratios. It is observed that while increasing has
a negligible effect on the deformation dynamics of the droplet for , it
enhances the deformation of the droplet when for both alternating and
direct electric fields. We believe that our results may be of immense
consequence in explaining the morphological evolution of droplets in a plethora
of scenarios ranging from nature to biology.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

Tuberous sclerosis with visceral leishmaniasis: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Visceral leishmaniasis, a tropical infectious disease, is a major public health problem in India. Tuberous sclerosis, a congenital neuro-ectodermosis, is an uncommon disease which requires life long treatment.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 15-year-old Indian patient, presented to the outpatient department of our institute with a high-grade fever for two months, splenomegaly and a history of generalized tonic-clonic convulsions since childhood. The clinical and laboratory findings suggested visceral leishmaniasis with tuberous sclerosis. The patient was treated with miltefosine and antiepileptics.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The patient responded well and in a follow up six months after presentation, she was found free of visceral leishmaniasis and seizures. Diagnosis and treatment of this rare combination of diseases is difficult.</p
Some New/Old Approaches to QCD
This is a talk delivered at the Meeting on Integrable Quantum Field Theories,
Villa Olmo and at STRINGS 1992, Rome, September 1992. I discuss some recent
attempts to revive two old ideas regarding an analytic approach to QCD-the
development of a string representation of the theory and the large N limit of
QCD.Comment: 20 page
Risk, trust and patients’ strategic choices of healthcare practitioners
Research on patients’ choice of healthcare practitioners has focussed on countries with regulated and controlled healthcare markets. In contrast, low- and middle-income countries have a pluralistic landscape where untrained, unqualified and unlicensed informal healthcare providers (IHPs) provide significant share of services. Using qualitative data from 58 interviews in an Indian village, this paper explores how patients choose between IHPs and qualified practitioners in the public and formal private sectors. The study found that patients’ choices were structurally constrained by accessibility and affordability of care and choosing a practitioner from any sector presented some risk. Negotiation and engagement with risks depended on perceived severity of the health condition and trust in practitioners. Patients had low institutional trust in public and formal private sectors, whereas IHPs operated outside any institutional framework. Consequently, people relied on relational or competence-derived interpersonal trust. Care was sought from formal private practitioners for severe issues due to high-competence-based interpersonal trust in them, whereas for other issues IHPs were preferred due to high relationship-based interpersonal trust. The research shows that patients develop a strategic approach to practitioner choice by using trust to negotiate risks, and crucially, in low- and middle-income countries IHPs bridge a gap by providing accessible and affordable care imbued with relational–interpersonal trust
Micro-fabrication of Carbon Structures by Pattern Miniaturization in Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Gel
A simple and novel method to fabricate and miniaturize surface and
sub-surface micro-structures and micro-patterns in glassy carbon is proposed
and demonstrated. An aqueous resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) sol is employed for
micro-molding of the master-pattern to be replicated, followed by controlled
drying and pyrolysis of the gel to reproduce an isotropically shrunk replica in
carbon. The miniaturized version of the master-pattern thus replicated in
carbon is about one order of magnitude smaller than original master by
repeating three times the above cycle of molding and drying. The
micro-fabrication method proposed will greatly enhance the toolbox for a facile
fabrication of a variety of Carbon-MEMS and C-microfluidic devices.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
The Emergence of Sparse Spanners and Greedy Well-Separated Pair Decomposition
A spanner graph on a set of points in contains a shortest path between
any pair of points with length at most a constant factor of their Euclidean
distance. In this paper we investigate new models and aim to interpret why good
spanners 'emerge' in reality, when they are clearly built in pieces by agents
with their own interests and the construction is not coordinated. Our main
result is to show that if edges are built in an arbitrary order but an edge is
built if and only if its endpoints are not 'close' to the endpoints of an
existing edge, the graph is a (1 + \eps)-spanner with a linear number of
edges, constant average degree, and the total edge length as a small
logarithmic factor of the cost of the minimum spanning tree. As a side product,
we show a simple greedy algorithm for constructing optimal size well-separated
pair decompositions that may be of interest on its own
