    Bacterial flora in the conjunctiva among the patients undergoing cataract surgery

    Background: The present study was aimed in identifying the normal organisms found in the conjunctiva of healthy eyes among the individuals undergoing cataract surgery and also antibacterial susceptibility of the isolates. Cataract is the major cause of blindness in the developing countries, cataract surgery is one of the common surgical practices.Methods: Study was conducted in the department of Microbiology, GSL Medical College from May to July 2018. Surgically removed cataract lens was collected in sterile nutrient broth and transported to Microbiology laboratory for culture and sensitivity testing. The broths were incubated at 37ºC for 24 hours subcultured on Blood agar, MacConkey agar and Nutrient agar, incubated aerobically at 37ºC for 24 hours and then examined for bacteria growth according to standard protocol. After incubation growth was identified by colony morphology, gram staining and biochemical tests. Antibiotic sensitivity testing was done on Muller-Hinton agar by the disk diffusion method.Results: During the study period, 58 samples were collected; the male female ratio was 1.14. Maximum strains were isolated among female; the male female ration was 0.95. Increase in flora was observed with age. No significant drug resistance was observed.Conclusions: This is a hospital based study which is not true representation of the community. Hence a community based study with large sample by considering the comorbid conditions such as occupation, diabetes, immune status can give the authentic data on the conjunctival flora

    Pedestrian Flow Characteristics for Different Pedestrian Facilities and Situations

    The pedestrian walking data collected at nineteen locations in five cities of India are analyzed in this paper. Pedestrian facilities are classified based on their width as sidewalk, wide-sidewalk and precincts. The analysis indicates that the pedestrian free flow speed is high on sidewalks (1.576 m/s) and low on precincts (1.340 m/s). The increase in width of the facility resulted in increased space available to a pedestrian, but reduced maximum flow rate and optimum density. It is found that the relationship between speed and density follows Underwood (exponential) model on sidewalk of varying widths and Greenshield’s (linear) model on a non-exclusive facility. Bi-directional flow on a facility affects the free flow speed and space available to the pedestrian adversely at high density. Squeezing effect at the centre and follow the predecessor near sides is observed under heavy bidirectional flow. The presence of a bottleneck reduces the free flow speed and maximum flow substantially. Pedestrians moved in layers at high density. Maximum flow rate is observed to be higher on the carriageway (2.067 ped/s) as compared to an exclusive pedestrian facility (1.493 ped/s)

    This paper will present a technique for array diagnosis using a small number of measured data acquired by a near-field system by making use of the concepts of compressed sensing technique in image processing. Here, the high cost of large array diagnosis in near-field facilities is mainly caused by the time required for the data acquisition. So there is a need to decrease the measurement time and at the same time the reconstruction of an array must be satisfactory. The proposed technique uses less number of measurement points compared to other proposed techniques like back-propagation method and standard matrix inversion method.     Renormalization group study of the Kondo problem at a junction of several Luttinger wires

    We study a system consisting of a junction of N quantum wires, where the junction is characterized by a scalar S-matrix, and an impurity spin is coupled to the electrons close to the junction. The wires are modeled as weakly interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. We derive the renormalization group equations for the Kondo couplings of the spin to the electronic modes on different wires, and analyze the renormalization group flows and fixed points for different values of the initial Kondo couplings and of the junction S-matrix (such as the decoupled S-matrix and the Griffiths S-matrix). We generally find that the Kondo couplings flow towards large and antiferromagnetic values in one of two possible ways. For the Griffiths S-matrix, we study one of the strong coupling flows by a perturbative expansion in the inverse of the Kondo coupling; we find that at large distances, the system approaches the ferromagnetic fixed point of the decoupled S-matrix. For the decoupled S-matrix with antiferromagnetic Kondo couplings and weak inter-electron interactions, the flows are to one of two strong coupling fixed points in which all the channels are strongly coupled to each other through the impurity spin. But strong inter-electron interactions, with K_\rho < N/(N+2), stabilize a multi-channel fixed point in which the coupling between different channels goes to zero.     Chronic renal insufficiency among Asian Indians with type 2 diabetes: I. Role of RAAS gene polymorphisms

    BACKGROUND: Renal failure in diabetes is mediated by multiple pathways. Experimental and clinical evidences suggest that renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) has a crucial role in diabetic kidney disease. A relationship between the RAAS genotypes and chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) among type 2 diabetes subjects has therefore been speculated. We investigated the contribution of selected RAAS gene polymorphisms to CRI among type 2 diabetic Asian Indian subjects. METHODS: Twelve single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from six genes namely-renin (REN), angiotensinogen (ATG), angiotensin converting enzyme I (ACE), angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1) and aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) gene from the RAAS pathway and one from chymase pathway were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method and tested for their association with diabetic CRI using a case-control approach. Successive cases presenting to study centres with type 2 diabetes of ≥2 years duration and moderate CRI diagnosed by serum creatinine ≥3 mg/dl after exclusion of non-diabetic causes of CRI (n = 196) were compared with diabetes subjects with no evidence of renal disease (n = 225). Logistic regression analysis was carried out to correlate various clinical parameters with genotypes, and to study pair wise interactions between SNPs of different genes. RESULTS: Of the 12 SNPs genotyped, Glu53Stop in AGT and A>T (-777) in AT1 genes, were monomorphic and not included for further analysis. We observed a highly significant association of Met235Thr SNP in angiotensinogen gene with CRI (O.R. 2.68, 95%CI: 2.01–3.57 for Thr allele, O.R. 2.94, 95%CI: 1.88–4.59 for Thr/Thr genotype and O.R. 2.68, 95%CI: 1.97–3.64 for ACC haplotype). A significant allelic and genotypic association of T>C (-344) SNP in aldosterone synthase gene (O.R. 1.57, 95%CI: 1.16–2.14 and O.R. 1.81, 95%CI: 1.21–2.71 respectively), and genotypic association of GA genotype of G>A (-1903) in chymase gene (O.R. 2.06, 95%CI: 1.34–3.17) were also observed. CONCLUSION: SNPs Met235Thr in angiotensinogen, T>C (-344) in aldosterone synthase, and G>A (-1903) in chymase genes are significantly associated with diabetic chronic renal insufficiency in Indian patients and warrant replication in larger sample sets. Use of such markers for prediction of susceptibility to diabetes specific renal disease in the ethnically Indian population appears promising

    Combined Forward-Backward Asymmetry Measurements in Top-Antitop Quark Production at the Tevatron

    The CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron have measured the asymmetry between yields of forward- and backward-produced top and antitop quarks based on their rapidity difference and the asymmetry between their decay leptons. These measurements use the full data sets collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=1.96\sqrt s =1.96 TeV. We report the results of combinations of the inclusive asymmetries and their differential dependencies on relevant kinematic quantities. The combined inclusive asymmetry is AFBttˉ=0.128±0.025A_{\mathrm{FB}}^{t\bar{t}} = 0.128 \pm 0.025. The combined inclusive and differential asymmetries are consistent with recent standard model predictions

    Efficient Use of Memory Bandwidth to Improve Network Processor Throughput

    We consider the efficiency of packet buffers used in packet switches built using network processors (NPs). Packet buffers are typically implemented using DRAM, which provides plentiful buffering at a reasonable cost. The problem we address is that a typical NP workload may be unable to utilize the peak DRAM bandwidth. Since the bandwidth of the packet buffer is often the bottleneck in the performance of a shared-memory packet switch, inefficient use of available DRAM bandwidth further reduces the packet throughput. Specialized hardware-based schemes that alleviate the DRAM bandwith problem in high-end routers may be less applicable to NP-based systems, in which cost is an important consideration. In thi

    Safety of Completion Thyroidectomy for Initially Misdiagnosed Thyroid Carcinoma

    Introduction Completion thyroidectomy is defined as the surgical removal of the remnant thyroid tissue following procedures of less than total or near-total thyroidectomy. Whether thyroid reoperations are associated with an increased complication risk is controversial. Objective A retrospective analysis was done of patients undergoing completion thyroidectomy for cancer of the thyroid who had undergone surgery elsewhere for solitary thyroid nodule. The incidence of surgical complications in these patients after reoperation was investigated in this study. Material and methods The study included a total of 53 patients who had undergone thyroid lobectomy for a solitary nodule as initial surgery elsewhere and were referred to our institute for completion thyroidectomy when the histopathology revealed malignancy. Results There were 53 patients, 43 females and 10 males. Their mean age was 34.7±12.12 years (range 19–65 years). After initial surgery, the histopathology revealed papillary carcinoma in 46 patients (86.8%), follicular carcinoma in 7 (13.2%). Fourteen out of 53 patients had recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy after initial surgery (26.4%). None of the patients had clinical hypocalcemia after the first surgery. One or more parathyroid glands were identified and preserved in 52 patients (98.1%) in the process of completion thyroidectomy. No patient had additional recurrent nerve injury at the second surgery. The mean serum calcium value preoperatively was 8.96±0.39 mg/dL, and six months after surgery serum calcium was 8.74±0.56 mg/dL. Mean follow-up was 18 months. Transient hypoparathyroidism occurred in 24.5% patients. Five patients were lost to follow-up. Permanent and symptomatic hyperparathyroidism occurred in eight patients (16.67%). Conclusions Completion thyroidectomy is a safe and appropriate option in the management of well-differentiated thyroid cancer. It removes disease on the ipsilateral and contralateral side of the thyroid and carries a low risk of recurrent laryngeal nerve damage, but a higher risk of permanent hypoparathyroidism
