    The effects of a group guidance programme on the self esteem of newly arrived children from the Chinese Mainland to Hong Kong

    The present study investigated the effects of a school-based group guidance programme on the self-esteem of newly arrived children from the Chinese Mainland to Hong Kong. A sample of 31 subjects (19 male, 12 female) from a primary school was selected for participation in this study. Among the 31 subjects, 16 joined the programme which was designed and implemented according to the Enhancing Adolescents' Self-Esteem: Facilitator's Manual for ten 90 minutes sessions over a 7-week period. The other 15 newly arrived children acted as the comparison group. The self-esteem of the participants was measured by the Self-Description Questionnaire - 1 (SDQ-1) (Marsh et al., 1983) and follow-up interviews were conducted. Results showed that the subjects in the experimental group had significantly higher peer relationship self-esteem than subjects who received no treatment. The subjects also reported that the programme was a valuable social skills learning experience for them.postprin

    More is Less: Perfectly Secure Oblivious Algorithms in the Multi-Server Setting

    The problem of Oblivious RAM (ORAM) has traditionally been studied in a single-server setting, but more recently the multi-server setting has also been considered. Yet it is still unclear whether the multi-server setting has any inherent advantages, e.g., whether the multi-server setting can be used to achieve stronger security goals or provably better efficiency than is possible in the single-server case. In this work, we construct a perfectly secure 3-server ORAM scheme that outperforms the best known single-server scheme by a logarithmic factor.     Screening and Characterization of Ternary Oxides for High-Temperature Carbon Capture

    Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is increasingly being accepted as a necessary component of any effort to mitigate the impact of anthropogenic climate change, as it is both a relatively mature and easily implemented technology. High-temperature CO2 absorption looping is a promising process that offers a much lower energy penalty than the current state of the art amine scrubbing techniques, but more effective materials are required for widespread implementation. This work describes the experimental characterisation and CO2 absorption properties of several new ternary transition metal oxides predicted by high-throughput DFT screening. One material reported here, Li5SbO5, displays reversible CO2 sorption, and maintains 72 % of its theoretical capacity out to 25 cycles. The results in this work are used to discuss major influences on CO2 absorption capacity and rate, including the role of the crystal structure, the transition metal, the alkali or alkaline earth metal, and the competing roles of thermodynamics and kinetics. Notably, this work shows the extent and rate to which ternary metal oxides carbonate is driven primarily by the identity of the alkali or alkaline earth ion and the nature of the crystal structure, whereas the identity of the transition ion carries little influence in the systems studied here

    Prevention of Dabigatran-Related Gastrointestinal Bleeding With Gastroprotective Agents: A Population-Based Study

    BACKGROUND & AIMS: Use of dabigatran, an inhibitor of thrombin, increases the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB). However, it is not clear whether gastroprotective agents (GPAs) prevent GIB in dabigatran users. We investigated the risk of GIB and the role of gastroprotective agents (including proton pump inhibitors and histamine type-2-receptor antagonists) in patients using dabigatran. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using a population-wide database managed by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Patients newly prescribed dabigatran from 2010 through 2013 were included in the analysis. Poisson regression was used to assess the risk of GIB in dabigatran users by incidence rate ratio (IRR), adjusted for patient characteristics, comorbidities, and concurrent medications. RESULTS: Among the 5041 patients newly prescribed dabigatran, 124 (2.5%) developed GIB during follow-up evaluation (4.2/100 patient-years). The risk of GIB in this population increased among patients 75 years and older (IRR, 2.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.66-3.68), patients with a history of peptic ulcers or GIB (IRR, 2.31; 95% CI, 1.54-3.46), and patients who used aspirin (IRR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.03-2.24). Concomitant use of gastroprotective agents was associated with a reduced risk of GIB (IRR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.35-0.77). Subcategory analysis showed that use of proton pump inhibitors (IRR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.31-0.91) or histamine type-2-receptor antagonists (IRR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.40-0.94) were associated with a lower risk of GIB. Further analysis showed that the risk reduction by gastroprotective agents was significant for only upper GIB (IRR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.15-0.54), and only for patients with a prior history of peptic ulcers or GIB (IRR, 0.14; 95% CI, 0.06-0.30). CONCLUSIONS: In the Hong Kong population, use of gastroprotective agents was associated with a reduced risk of GIB in patients taking dabigatran. The association was stronger for upper GIB than lower GIB, and in patients with a prior history of peptic ulcers or GIB

    Coherent optical wavelength conversion via cavity-optomechanics

    We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate coherent wavelength conversion of optical photons using photon-phonon translation in a cavity-optomechanical system. For an engineered silicon optomechanical crystal nanocavity supporting a 4 GHz localized phonon mode, optical signals in a 1.5 MHz bandwidth are coherently converted over a 11.2 THz frequency span between one cavity mode at wavelength 1460 nm and a second cavity mode at 1545 nm with a 93% internal (2% external) peak efficiency. The thermal and quantum limiting noise involved in the conversion process is also analyzed, and in terms of an equivalent photon number signal level are found to correspond to an internal noise level of only 6 and 4x10-3 quanta, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, appendi
