Proofs of Some Conjectures of Chan on Appell-Lerch Sums

On page 3 of his lost notebook, Ramanujan defines the Appell-Lerch sum ϕ(q):=n=0(q;q)2nqn+1(q;q2)n+12,\phi(q):=\sum_{n=0}^\infty \dfrac{(-q;q)_{2n}q^{n+1}}{(q;q^2)_{n+1}^2}, which is connected to some of his sixth order mock theta functions. Let n=1a(n)qn:=ϕ(q)\sum_{n=1}^\infty a(n)q^n:=\phi(q). In this paper, we find a representation of the generating function of a(10n+9)a(10n+9) in terms of qq-products. As corollaries, we deduce the congruences a(50n+19)a(50n+39)a(50n+49)0 (mod 25)a(50n+19)\equiv a(50n+39)\equiv a(50n+49)\equiv0~(\textup{mod}~25) as well as a(1250n+250r+219)0 (mod 125)a(1250n+250r+219)\equiv 0~(\textup{mod}~125), where r=1r=1, 33, and 44. The first three congruences were conjectured by Chan in 2012, whereas the congruences modulo 125 are new. We also prove two more conjectural congruences of Chan for the coefficients of two Appell-Lerch sums.Comment: 14 page

Exponential type of hypercyclic entire functions

In this paper the exponential type of hypercyclic entire functions with respect to a sequence (Φn(D)) of differential operators is considered, where every Φn is an entire function of exponential type. We prove that under suitable conditions certain rates of growth are possible for hypercyclicity while others are not. In particular, our statements extend the negative part of a sharp result on growth of D-hypercyclic entire functions due to Grosse-Erdmann, and are related to a result by Chan and Shapiro about the existence of Φ(D)-hypercyclic functions in certain Hilbert spaces of entire functions.Dirección General de Enseñanza Superior (DGES). In conjunction with the Minority Health & Health Disparities International Research Training program at San Diego State University, three Linfield students contributed to the ongoing Peru Ethnomedical Project in Trujillo, Peru by: Conducting surveys in two neighborhoods on the edge of the city; Creating a medicinal plant garden in the Chan Chan archaeological site museum. Surveys conducted in Moche, Trujillo were part of a larger study supervised by anthropologists Douglas Sharon and Thomas Love. The research aims to evaluate the usage of medicinal plants in rural and urban Peruvian communities. Linfield’s contribution focused on the creation of the medicinal garden to serve as a community model and educational program. The overall purpose of the 2015 summer faculty collaborative project was to: Preserve the knowledge of these practices; Analyze the plant properties; Publish the information; Provide the community with a garden that reflects the commonly used plants; Educate new generations; Bring back and apply this knowledge in the Linfield community
