    Library as Scholarly Publishing Partner: Keys to Success

    Many academic libraries are looking at new ways to add value when they deliver services to faculty, and one potential area where the library can provide new services is in partnering with academic staff to support the dissemination of faculty research. Librarians have traditionally helped faculty researchers at the beginning of the research cycle, with the discovery and delivery of information sources. However, they are now playing a role at the end of the research cycle, providing services that support scholarly publishing. This paper examines library participation in faculty-led publishing ventures. In particular, it explores the value that smaller research libraries can provide to faculty editors through journal hosting, which will be analysed through an examination of the successful migration of the Australian Journal of Teacher Education, a faculty-administered journal at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia, to the University’s institutional repository. This transition provided library staff members at Edith Cowan University opportunities to develop new knowledge and skills in journal publishing, while meeting the journal’s need for a better way to manage a growing influx of article submissions. The resultant faculty-library partnership enabled more effective management of the journal and has contributed to its growing success. The evaluative framework developed to enable assessment of the success of this journal’s transition can help other libraries demonstrate the success of their own journal hosting ventures

    Can Preschoolers be Health Messengers to Promote Breast Health among Chinese Americans?

    Women’s limited knowledge about breast cancer screening (BCS), combined with differences in Eastern and Western disease prevention concepts, may contribute to late-stage breast cancer diagnosis among minorities. Children can be conduits of knowledge transfer to adults. This pilot study tested the use of a culturally-tailored theatrical preschool performance in increasing Chinese American women’s knowledge of BCS guidelines. Chinese preschool children relayed BCS guidelines through a culturally-tailored theatrical performance. Data were collected from 177 Chinese American women (84% foreign-born) who completed pre- and post-performance surveys. Findings suggested that promoting BCS guidelines through a culturally-tailored preschool theatrical performance significantly increased participants’ knowledge of the guidelines. Interventions involving young children as change agents to deliver simple health messages such as BCS guidelines are feasible and promising to increase knowledge and desired behavioral change within the target population. Further empirical investigations are warranted in larger randomized controlled trials

    Obstacles against the Tourism Development as an Instrument of Poverty Alleviation in Felicitation Volume of Senior Professor Prema Podimenike

    The article describes the negative impact of poverty alleviation in tourism of Sri Lanka based on secondary and time series data that were gathered by Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority from 1968 to 2014. Additionally, secondary data from Department of Census and Statistics in Sri Lanka and Central Bank of Sri Lanka were employed in the study to examine the key objective. The key objective is to discover potential obstacles against the tourism development as an instrument of poverty alleviation while reviewing the research question that how to improve poverty elimination via tourism development. Pearson correlation analysis and descriptive analysis are used. The study suites two suppositions to accomplish the above mentioned objective focusing empirical evidences. Firstly, there are obstacles to develop tourism industry in Sri Lanka. Secondly, the obstacles affect poverty alleviation via tourism development in Sri Lanka. However, findings of this study reveal that significant relationship between tourism development and poverty alleviation has being damaged by obstacles. We conclude that tourism is a proper instrument to move out from poverty and disparity and suggest that potential obstacles should be managed via tourism development strategies. Therefore this study stimulates for policy makers to refer the present tourism policy and add alternative solutions to unfold issues in Sri Lankan rural tourism industry. Significance of this studis not limited to Sri Lanka and under the limitations; findings, suggestions and conclusions of the study can be utilized to develop rural tourism based national plan in developing world
