    Area dependence of interlayer tunneling in strongly correlated bilayer two-dimensional electron systems at ν_T = 1

    The area and perimeter dependence of the Josephson-like interlayer tunneling signature of the coherent ν_T = 1 quantum Hall phase in bilayer two-dimensional electron systems is examined. Electrostatic top gates of various sizes and shapes are used to locally define distinct ν_T = 1 regions in the same sample. Near the phase boundary with the incoherent ν_T = 1 state at large layer separation, our results demonstrate that the tunneling conductance in the coherent phase is closely proportional to the total area of the tunneling region. This implies that tunneling at ν_T = 1 is a bulk phenomenon in this regime

    The ^(26)Al(^3He,d)^(27)Si reaction was measured from 0°≤θ_(c.m.)≤35° at E(^3He)=20 MeV using a quadrupole-dipole-dipole-dipole magnetic spectrometer. States in ^(27)Si were observed above the background at 7652 and 7741 keV and upper limits were set for the state at 7592 keV. Implications for the ^(26)Al(p,γ)^(27)Si stellar reaction rate are discussed

    Social Enrichment during Postnatal Development Induces Transgenerational Effects on Emotional and Reproductive Behavior in Mice

    Across species there is evidence that the quality of the early social environment can have a profound impact on neurobiology and behavior. In the present study we explore the effect of communal rearing conditions (three dams with three litters per cage) during the postnatal period on offspring (F1) and grand-offspring (F2) anxiety-like and maternal behavior in Balb/c mice. Females rearing pups in communal nests exhibited increased levels of postpartum maternal care and communal rearing was found to abolish sex-differences in weaning weights. In adulthood, communally reared offspring were observed to display reduced anxiety-like behavior when placed in a novel environment. When rearing their own offspring under standard conditions, communally reared females demonstrated higher levels of motivation to retrieve pups, built higher quality nests, and exhibited higher levels of postpartum care compared to standard reared females. When exposed to an intruder male, communally reared females were more subordinate and less aggressive. F2 offspring of communally reared females were observed to engage in reduced anxiety-like behavior, have larger litter sizes and an increased frequency of nursing on PND 1. Analysis of neuropeptide receptor levels suggest that a communal rearing environment may exert sustained effects on behavior through modification of oxytocin and vasopressin (V1a) receptor densities. Though Balb-C mice are often considered “socially-incompetent” and high in anxiety-like behavior, our findings suggest that through enrichment of the postnatal environment, these behavioral and neuroendocrine deficits may be attenuated both within and across generations

    Charge Imbalance and Bilayer 2D Electron Systems at νT=1\nu_T = 1

    We use interlayer tunneling to study bilayer 2D electron systems at νT=1\nu_T = 1 over a wide range of charge density imbalance, Δν=ν1ν2\Delta \nu =\nu_1-\nu_2, between the two layers. We find that the strongly enhanced tunneling associated with the coherent excitonic νT=1\nu_T = 1 phase at small layer separation can survive at least up to an imbalance of Δν\Delta \nu = 0.5, i.e (ν1,ν2)(\nu_1, \nu_2) = (3/4, 1/4). Phase transitions between the excitonic νT=1\nu_T = 1 state and bilayer states which lack significant interlayer correlations can be induced in three different ways: by increasing the effective interlayer spacing d/d/\ell, the temperature TT, or the charge imbalance, Δν\Delta \nu. We observe that close to the phase boundary the coherent νT=1\nu_T = 1 phase can be absent at Δν\Delta \nu = 0, present at intermediate Δν\Delta \nu, but then absent again at large Δν\Delta \nu, thus indicating an intricate phase competition between it and incoherent quasi-independent layer states. At zero imbalance, the critical d/d/\ell shifts linearly with temperature, while at Δν\Delta \nu = 1/3 the critical d/d/\ell is only weakly dependent on TT. At Δν\Delta \nu = 1/3 we report the first observation of a direct phase transition between the coherent excitonic νT=1\nu_T = 1 bilayer integer quantum Hall phase and the pair of single layer fractional quantized Hall states at ν1\nu_1 = 2/3 and ν2=1/3\nu_2=1/3.Comment: 13 pages, 8 postscript figures.     Diurnal to interannual variability of low‐level cloud cover over western equatorial Africa in May–October

    This study examines the diurnal to interannual variations of the stratiform cloud cover in May–October (1971–2019) from a 3-hourly station database and from ERA5 reanalyses over western equatorial Africa (WEA). The main diurnal variations of the local-scale fraction and genus of stratiform clouds are synthesized into three canonical diurnal types (i.e., “clear,” “clear afternoon,” “cloudy” days). The interannual variations of frequencies of the three diurnal types during the cloudiest months (JJAS) are mostly associated with two main mechanisms: a meridional shallow overturning cell associating more “cloudy” and less “clear” and “clear afternoon” days to anomalous southerlies below 900 hPa over and around WEA, anomalous ascent around 5°–7°N, anomalous northerlies between 875 and 700 hPa, and anomalous subsidence over the equatorial Atlantic. This circulation is strongly related to interannual variations of the equatorial Atlantic upwelling (i.e., more clouds when the upwelling is strong) associated with a meridional shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone over the Tropical Atlantic and adjacent continents. The second mechanism operates mostly in the zonal direction and involves again the coupled ocean–atmosphere system over the equatorial Atlantic, but also the remote El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). An anomalously cold equatorial Atlantic drives increased low-level westerlies toward the Congo Basin. Warm ENSO events promote broad warm and easterly anomalies in the middle and upper troposphere, which increase the local static stability, and thus the local stratiform cloud cover over WEA. The present study suggests new mechanisms responsible for interannual variations of stratiform clouds in WEA, thus providing avenues of future research regarding the stability of the stratiform cloud deck under the ongoing differential warming of tropical ocean and land masses

    Experimental evidence of a natural parity state in 26^{26}Mg and its impact to the production of neutrons for the s process

    We have studied natural parity states in 26^{26}Mg via the 22^{22}Ne(6^{6}Li,d)26^{26}Mg reaction. Our method significantly improves the energy resolution of previous experiments and, as a result, we report the observation of a natural parity state in 26^{26}Mg. Possible spin-parity assignments are suggested on the basis of published γ\gamma-ray decay experiments. The stellar rate of the 22^{22}Ne(α\alpha,γ\gamma)26^{26}Mg reaction is reduced and may give rise to an increase in the production of s-process neutrons via the 22^{22}Ne(α\alpha,n)25^{25}Mg reaction.Comment: Published in PR
