    The Role of NMDA Receptor Subtypes in Short-Term Plasticity in the Rat Entorhinal Cortex

    We have previously shown that spontaneous release of glutamate in the entorhinal cortex (EC) is tonically facilitated via activation of presynaptic NMDA receptors (NMDAr) containing the NR2B subunit. Here we show that the same receptors mediate short-term plasticity manifested by frequency-dependent facilitation of evoked glutamate release at these synapses. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings were made from layer V pyramidal neurones in rat EC slices. Evoked excitatory postsynaptic currents showed strong facilitation at relatively low frequencies (3 Hz) of activation. Facilitation was abolished by an NR2B-selective blocker (Ro 25-6981), but unaffected by NR2A-selective antagonists (Zn2+, NVP-AAM077). In contrast, postsynaptic NMDAr-mediated responses could be reduced by subunit-selective concentrations of all three antagonists. The data suggest that NMDAr involved in presynaptic plasticity in layer V are exclusively NR1/NR2B diheteromers, whilst postsynaptically they are probably a mixture of NR1/NR2A, NR1/NR2B diheteromers and NR1/NR2A/NR2B triheteromeric receptors

    Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) increases endothelin-1 release by endothelial cells. Hypertension is a major complication of rHuEPO therapy in hemodialysis (HD) patients. We have previously reported that patients receiving rHuEPO intravenously (i.v.) had higher mean arterial pressure (MAP) and plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels than those in which the hormone was administered subcutaneously (s.c). To test whether the increased serum ET-1 levels associated with i.v. rHuEPO administration are the result of a direct effect of the hormone on ET-1 release by the endothelial cells (EC), we examined the effects of rHuEPO in vitro. Bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells (BPAEC) were exposed to doses of rHuEPO of 0.8; 1.6; 3.3 and 6.6 U/ml. A 24 hour-time course showed maximal ET-1 production at 12 hours for all the doses tested. A significant increase in cell proliferation over controls was observed at 24 hours, for all rHuEPO doses, and no correlation was found between ET-1 values and cell proliferation. Inhibition of protein synthesis by cycloheximide (10 µg/ml) abolished the stimulation of ET-1 release by rHuEPO. Thrombin (4 U/ml) and angiotensin II (10-7 M), two potent stimulators of ET-1 release, had additive effects to those of rHuEPO. Specific thrombin and angiotensin II antagonists blocked these additive effects, reducing ET-1 release to the level of rHuEPO stimulation alone. In summary, rHuEPO stimulates vascular EC in culture to increase ET-1 release through an increase in synthesis and in a time dependent fashion. The routes of stimulation seem to differ from other known ET-1 secretogoges. Our data also confirm a significant mitogenic effect of rHuEPO on the endothelial cell

    Extreme Variability in a Broad Absorption Line Quasar

    CRTS J084133.15+200525.8 is an optically bright quasar at z=2.345 that has shown extreme spectral variability over the past decade. Photometrically, the source had a visual magnitude of V~17.3 between 2002 and 2008. Then, over the following five years, the source slowly brightened by approximately one magnitude, to V~16.2. Only ~1 in 10,000 quasars show such extreme variability, as quantified by the extreme parameters derived for this quasar assuming a damped random walk model. A combination of archival and newly acquired spectra reveal the source to be an iron low-ionization broad absorption line (FeLoBAL) quasar with extreme changes in its absorption spectrum. Some absorption features completely disappear over the 9 years of optical spectra, while other features remain essentially unchanged. We report the first definitive redshift for this source, based on the detection of broad H-alpha in a Keck/MOSFIRE spectrum. Absorption systems separated by several 1000 km/s in velocity show coordinated weakening in the depths of their troughs as the continuum flux increases. We interpret the broad absorption line variability to be due to changes in photoionization, rather than due to motion of material along our line of sight. This source highlights one sort of rare transition object that astronomy will now be finding through dedicated time-domain surveys.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Ap

    The contribution of interface phonons to the first order Raman scattering in nanocrystals with non spherical geometry is analyzed. Interface optical phonons in the spheroidal geometry are discussed and the corresponding Frohlich-like electron-phonon interaction is reported in the framework of the dielectric continuum approach. It is shown that the interface phonon modes are strongly dependent on the nanocrystal geometry, particularly on the ellipsoid's semi-axis ratio. The new Raman selection rules have revealed that solely interface phonon modes with even angular momentum are allowed to contribute to the first order phonon-assisted scattering of light. On this basis we are able to give an explanation for the observed low frequency shoulders present in the Raman cross-section of several II-VI semiconductor nanostructures.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    Licensed control does not reduce local Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo population size in winter

    Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo have increased on European freshwaters, creating conflicts with fishing interests. As a result, control measures have been implemented in several countries, although their effect on the English population has yet to be determined. Wetland Bird Survey data was used to derive population growth rates (PGR) of non-coastal Cormorant populations in England. PGR was analysed in relation to control intensity at different scales (5- to 30-km radius) from 2001 to 2009 in order to determine (1) the extent to which control intensity (proportion of the local population shot per winter) was associated with site-level population change, and (2) whether potential effects of control intensity were evident on Special Protection Areas (SPAs). There were no clear differences in PGR when comparing sites which had experienced control versus sites where control had never been carried out. The few significant relationships between control intensity and Cormorant PGR detected were mostly positive, i.e. population growth was associated with higher control intensity. Control intensity was not related to Cormorant numbers in SPAs. Positive associations with control may arise because control is reactive, or because non-lethal effects cause greater dispersal of Cormorants. These results provide no evidence that Cormorant removal at local scales is having an effect on longer term (i.e. year-to-year) population size at a site level. They also suggest that control measures have not affected national population trends, although a better understanding of site use and movements of individual Cormorants needs to be developed at smaller scales (including those due to disturbance caused by control measures) to more fully understand processes at larger scales. Further research is also needed into the extent to which lethal and non-lethal effects of control on Cormorants are having the desired impact on predation rates of fish, and so help resolve the conflict between Cormorants and fisheries.</p

    Changes in union membership over time : a panel analysis for West Germany

    Despite the apparent stability of the wage bargaining institutions in West Germany, aggregate union membership has been declining dramatically since the early 90's. However, aggregate gross membership numbers do not distinguish by employment status and it is impossible to disaggregate these sufficiently. This paper uses four waves of the German Socioeconomic Panel in 1985, 1989, 1993, and 1998 to perform a panel analysis of net union membership among employees. We estimate a correlated random effects probit model suggested in Chamberlain (1984) to take proper account of individual specfic effects. Our results suggest that at the individual level the propensity to be a union member has not changed considerably over time. Thus, the aggregate decline in membership is due to composition effects. We also use the estimates to predict net union density at the industry level based on the IAB employment subsample for the time period 1985 to 1997. JEL - Klassifikation: J
