    Stock Market Listing, Investor Myopia and Innovation: The Role of Nominal Share Prices

    Lower nominal stock prices tend to attract more speculative trading, causing higher price volatility, which may force managers of publically listed firms to excessively focus on short-term earnings at the expense of R&D. We hypothesize that firms investing more in R&D prefer to set higher share prices to mitigate investor short-termism and foster innovation. Consistent with this hypothesis, we find that firms with high R&D capital (1) choose higher share prices at their initial listing, and (2) are subsequently less likely to engage in stock splits to bring down their share prices. Justifying these price management actions, we find that high share prices are negatively associated with proxies of investor myopia. We also show that high share prices are positively associated with future productivity of innovation, after controlling for a host of other factors. Our results suggest that managers of publicly listed firms use nominal share price as a tool to enhance innovation

    A Bi-directional Multi-hop Inference Model for Joint Dialog Sentiment Classification and Act Recognition

    The joint task of Dialog Sentiment Classification (DSC) and Act Recognition (DAR) aims to predict the sentiment label and act label for each utterance in a dialog simultaneously. However, current methods encode the dialog context in only one direction, which limits their ability to thoroughly comprehend the context. Moreover, these methods overlook the explicit correlations between sentiment and act labels, which leads to an insufficient ability to capture rich sentiment and act clues and hinders effective and accurate reasoning. To address these issues, we propose a Bi-directional Multi-hop Inference Model (BMIM) that leverages a feature selection network and a bi-directional multi-hop inference network to iteratively extract and integrate rich sentiment and act clues in a bi-directional manner. We also employ contrastive learning and dual learning to explicitly model the correlations of sentiment and act labels. Our experiments on two widely-used datasets show that BMIM outperforms state-of-the-art baselines by at least 2.6% on F1 score in DAR and 1.4% on F1 score in DSC.     Analysis of RTN signals in Resistive-Switching RAM device and its correlation with device operations

    Filament rupture/restoration induced by movement of defects, e.g. oxygen ions/vacancies, is considered as the switching mechanism in HfO2 RRAM. However, details of filament alteration during switching are still speculative, due to the limitations of existing experiment-based probing techniques, impeding its understanding. In this work, for the first time, an RTN-based defect tracking technique is developed for RRAM devices, which can monitor the movements of defects and statistically provide their spatial and energy profiles. The critical filament region is experimentally identified and its alteration is observed and correlated with switching operations under various operation conditions. This provides a useful tool for further development of RRAM technology

    Life-cycle water uses for energy consumption of Chinese households from 2002 to 2015

    China's household energy demands' life-cycle water uses from 2002 to 2015 are quantified with an Input-Output analysis disaggregating rural and urban impacts. 9.73 and 1.60 km3 of water was withdrawn and consumed respectively in the life cycle of Chinese household energy demands in 2015, which was dominated by power and heat uses. An average urbanite's household energy uses, including coal, gas, petroleum products, power and heat, require about four times of life-cycle water uses than its rural counterpart. Among all upstream sectors, while agricultural sectors accounted for the largest shares for all energy uses, oil and gas extraction made significant contributions to petroleum products and gas consumption. A Structural Decomposition Analysis is conducted to disentangle the impacts of four driving factors, i.e. population, demand, economic structure and technology. Population change reduced energy consumption's life-cycle water use for rural households but increased that for urban households. Each economic sector's water intensity decreases, which represent technology advancement, played the dominant role curbing household energy consumption's life-cycle water uses. While power and heat dominates the household energy use profile, urbanization is accompanied by household consumption shifting from coal to gas and petroleum products. In order to reduce household energy consumption's impacts and reliance on water resources, it is imperative to reduce energy production'swater use by adopting water-saving technologies, such as air cooling, as well as to reduce upstream sectors' water intensities, such as by promoting drip irrigation
