Facilitating Development of Foreign Language, Literacy, and Culture

    Get PDF
In this portfolio, the author describes integral components of his teaching philosophy which include how the instructor can become a supportive facilitator, how he can promote use of the target language for communication, and how motivation can reinforce language instruction and learning. Specific topics of interest were investigated further in support of the teaching philosophy. The artifacts discuss Utah’s dual language immersion program: its development, future, and expected outcomes; the acquisition of multiliteracy skills for educational achievement; as well as the use of technology in promoting target language use and intercultural communicative competence. Finally, the author includes an annotated bibliography on topics of communicative language teaching, sociocultural perspectives on second language learning and identity formation and the effects of code switching and identity

The article provides a survey of research on immigrant Hindus and South Asian Hinduism in the United States, focusing in particular on certain trends in the development of American Hinduism (e.g., Americanization, protestantization, ecumenization, congregationalization, homogenization, ritual adaptation) and prominent themes in more recent scholarship on the topic (e.g., race, transnational connections, and Hindu nationalism)

Wash Solution Bath Life Extension for the Space Shuttle Rocket Motor Aqueous Cleaning System

A spray-in-air aqueous cleaning system, which replaced 1,1,1 trichloroethane (TCA) vapor degreasing, is used for critical cleaning of Space Shuttle Redesigned Solid Rocket Motor (RSRM) metal parts. Small-scale testing demonstrated that the alkaline-based wash solution possesses adequate soil loading and cleaning properties. However, full-scale testing exhibited unexpected depletion of some primary components of the wash solution. Specifically, there was a significant decrease in the concentration of sodium metasilicate which forced change-out of the wash solution after eight days. Extension of wash solution bath life was necessary to ease the burden of frequent change-out on manufacturing. A laboratory study supports a depletion mechanism that is initiated by the hydrolysis of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) lowering the pH of the solution. The decrease in pH causes polymerization and subsequent precipitation of sodium metasilicate (SM). Further investigation showed that maintaining the pH was the key to preventing the precipitation of the sodium metasilicate. Implementation to the full scale operation demonstrated that periodic additions of potassium hydroxide (KOH) extended the useful bath life to more than four months

Host Galaxies Catalog Used in LIGO Searches for Compact Binary Coalescence Events

    Get PDF
An up-to-date catalog of nearby galaxies considered as hosts of binary compact objects is provided with complete information about sky position, distance, extinction-corrected blue luminosity and error estimates. With our current understanding of binary evolution, rates of formation and coalescence for binary compact objects scale with massive-star formation and hence the (extinction-corrected) blue luminosity of host galaxies. Coalescence events in binary compact objects are among the most promising gravitational-wave sources for ground-based gravitational-wave detectors such as LIGO. Our catalog and associated error estimates are important for the interpretation of analyses, carried out for LIGO, to constrain the rates of compact binary coalescence, given an astrophysical population model for the sources considered. We discuss how the notion of effective distance, created to account for the antenna pattern of a gravitational-wave detector, must be used in conjunction with our catalog. We note that the catalog provided can be used on other astronomical analysis of populations that scale with galaxy blue luminosity.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures, Accepted to Astrophysical Journal. Tesseract CubeSat Bus with Deployable Solar Panels

    Get PDF
This project will aim to create a new CubeSat satellite structure that incorporates new subsystems to increase the manufacturability and versatility of PolySat’s standard satellite architecture. This new structure will incorporate deployable solar panels into the system, increasing power generation for the satellite. The structure of the CubeSat is vital to the overall system’s performance, and developing a standard high-performance system will allow for the integration of various payloads while minimizing the need for mission-specific customizations. This project will also allow for a majority of the structure to be manufactured in-house in the Cal Poly machine shops, allowing for the direct application of learn-by-doing. The integration of deployable solar panels will also involve design and fabrication of circuit boards. To complete these goals, we will leverage experience that we have had with the design and construction of previous CubeSats. Moreover, students have a chance to incorporate design processes that they have learned in various Cal Poly courses. This new structure will allow us to push the limits on what we can do with our already powerful CubeSat design. The design will allow us to provide higher performance to possible project sponsors, thus increasing the chance of winning future project proposals. Winning project proposals not only brings in funding for PolySat research projects, but also facilitates campus-wide development by bringing in additional funds for the university
