    We revisit the classical approach to cluster expansions, based on tree graphs, and establish a new convergence condition that improves those by Kotecky-Preiss and Dobrushin, as we show in some examples. The two ingredients of our approach are: (i) a careful consideration of the Penrose identity for truncated functions, and (ii) the use of iterated transformations to bound tree-graph expansions.Comment: 16 pages.     Model‐based control of mechanical ventilation: design and clinical validation

    Background. We developed a model‐based control system using end‐tidal carbon dioxide fraction (FE′CO2) to adjust a ventilator during clinical anaesthesia. Methods. We studied 16 ASA I-II patients (mean age 38 (range 20-59) yr; weight 67 (54-87) kg) during i.v. anaesthesia for elective surgery. After periods of normal ventilation the patients were either hyper‐ or hypoventilated to assess precision and dynamic behaviour of the control system. These data were compared with a previous group where a fuzzy‐logic controller had been used. Responses to different clinical events (invalid carbon dioxide measurement, limb tourniquet release, tube cuff leak, exhaustion of carbon dioxide absorbent, simulation of pulmonary embolism) were also noted. Results. The model‐based controller correctly maintained the setpoint. No significant difference was found for the static performance between the two controllers. The dynamic response of the model‐based controller was more rapid (P<0.05). The mean rise time after a setpoint increase of 1 vol% was 313 (sd 90) s and 142 (17) s for fuzzy‐logic and model‐based control, respectively, and after a 1 vol% decrease was 355 (127) s and 177 (36) s, respectively. The new model‐based controller had a consistent response to clinical artefacts. Conclusion. A model‐based FE′CO2 controller can be used in a clinical setting. It reacts appropriately to artefacts, and has a better dynamic response to setpoint changes than a previously described fuzzy‐logic controller. Br J Anaesth 2004; 92: 800-

    It is demonstrated that the thermal structure of the noncritical free Bose Gas is completely described by certain periodic generalized Gaussian stochastic process or equivalently by certain periodic generalized Gaussian random field. Elementary properties of this Gaussian stochastic thermal structure have been established. Gentle perturbations of several types of the free thermal stochastic structure are studied. In particular new models of non-Gaussian thermal structures have been constructed and a new functional integral representation of the corresponding euclidean-time Green functions have been obtained rigorously.Comment: 51 pages, LaTeX fil

    Stable nondegenerate optical parametric oscillation at degenerate frequencies in Na:KTP

    We report the realization of a light source specifically designed for the generation of bright continuous-variable entangled beams and for Heisenberg-limited inteferometry. The source is a nondegenerate, single-mode, continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator in Na:KTP, operated at frequency degeneracy and just above threshold, which is also of interest for the study of critical fluctuations at the transition point. The residual frequency-difference jitter is ±\pm 150 kHz for a 3 MHz cold cavity half-width at half maximum. We observe 4 dB of photon-number-difference squeezing at 200 kHz. The Na:KTP crystal is noncritically phase-matched for a 532 nm pump and polarization crosstalk is therefore practically nonexistent

    Phenomenology of the Lense-Thirring effect in the Solar System

    Recent years have seen increasing efforts to directly measure some aspects of the general relativistic gravitomagnetic interaction in several astronomical scenarios in the solar system. After briefly overviewing the concept of gravitomagnetism from a theoretical point of view, we review the performed or proposed attempts to detect the Lense-Thirring effect affecting the orbital motions of natural and artificial bodies in the gravitational fields of the Sun, Earth, Mars and Jupiter. In particular, we will focus on the evaluation of the impact of several sources of systematic uncertainties of dynamical origin to realistically elucidate the present and future perspectives in directly measuring such an elusive relativistic effect.Comment: LaTex, 51 pages, 14 figures, 22 tables.     Regional differences in psychiatric disorders in Chile

    BACKGROUND: Psychiatric epidemiological surveys in developing countries are rare and are frequently conducted in regions that are not necessarily representative of the entire country. In addition, in large countries with dispersed populations national rates may have low value for estimating the need for mental health services and programs. METHODS: The Chile Psychiatric Prevalence Study using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview was conducted in four distinct regions of the country on a stratified random sample of 2,978 people. Lifetime and 12-month prevalence and service utilization rates were estimated. RESULTS: Significant differences in the rates of major depressive disorder, substance abuse disorders, non-affective psychosis, and service utilization were found across the regions. The differential prevalence rates could not be accounted by socio-demographic differences between sites. CONCLUSIONS: Regional differences across countries may exist that have both implications for prevalence rates and service utilization. Planning mental health services for population centers that span wide geographical areas based on studies conducted in a single region may be misleading, and may result in areas with high need being underserved
