    Superconducting Volume Fraction in Overdoped Regime of La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_: Implication for Phase Separation from Magnetic-Susceptibility Measurement

    Full text link
    We have grown a single crystal of La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_ in which the Sr concentration, x, continuously changes from 0.24 to 0.29 in the overdoped regime and obtained many pieces of single crystals with different x values by slicing the single crystal. From detailed measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, chi, of each piece, it has been found that the absolute value of chi at the measured lowest temperature 2 K, |chi_2K_|, on field cooling rapidly decreases with increasing x as well as the superconducting (SC) transition temperature. As the value of |chi_2K_| is regarded as corresponding to the SC volume fraction in a sample, it has been concluded that a phase separation into SC and normal-state regions occurs in a sample of La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_ in the overdoped regime.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, ver. 2 has been accepted in J. Double bundle arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction with remnant preserving technique using a hamstring autograft

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Preservation of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) remnant is important from the biological point of view as it enhances revascularization, and preserves the proprioceptive function of the graft construct. Additionally, it may have a useful biomechanical function. Double bundle ACL reconstruction has been shown to better replicate the native ACL anatomy and results in better restoration of the rotational stability than single bundle reconstruction.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used the far anteromedial (FAM) portal for creation of the femoral tunnels, with a special technique for its preoperative localization using three dimensional (3D) CT. The central anteromedial (AM) portal was used to make a longitudinal slit in the ACL remnant to allow visualization of the tips of the guide pins during anatomical creation of the tibial tunnels within the native ACL tibial foot print. The use of curved hemostat allow retrieval of the wire loop from the apertures of the femoral tunnels through the longitudinal slit in the ACL remnant thereby, guarding against impingement of the reconstruction graft against the ACL remnant as well as the roof of the intercondylar notch.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our technique allows for anatomical double bundle reconstruction of the ACL while maximally preserving the ACL remnant without the use of intra-operative image intensifier.</p

    Development of an eight-band theory for quantum-dot heterostructures

    We derive a nonsymmetrized 8-band effective-mass Hamiltonian for quantum-dot heterostructures (QDHs) in Burt's envelope-function representation. The 8x8 radial Hamiltonian and the boundary conditions for the Schroedinger equation are obtained for spherical QDHs. Boundary conditions for symmetrized and nonsymmetrized radial Hamiltonians are compared with each other and with connection rules that are commonly used to match the wave functions found from the bulk kp Hamiltonians of two adjacent materials. Electron and hole energy spectra in three spherical QDHs: HgS/CdS, InAs/GaAs, and GaAs/AlAs are calculated as a function of the quantum dot radius within the approximate symmetrized and exact nonsymmetrized 8x8 models. The parameters of dissymmetry are shown to influence the energy levels and the wave functions of an electron and a hole and, consequently, the energies of both intraband and interband transitions.Comment: 36 pages, 10 figures, E-mail addresses: [email protected], [email protected]

    A Measurement of the D±D^{*\pm} Cross Section in Two-Photon Processes

    We have measured the inclusive D±D^{*\pm} production cross section in a two-photon collision at the TRISTAN e+ee^+e^- collider. The mean s\sqrt{s} of the collider was 57.16 GeV and the integrated luminosity was 150 pb1pb^{-1}. The differential cross section (dσ(D±)/dPTd\sigma(D^{*\pm})/dP_T) was obtained in the PTP_T range between 1.6 and 6.6 GeV and compared with theoretical predictions, such as those involving direct and resolved photon processes.Comment: 8 pages, Latex format (article), figures corrected, published in Phys. Magnetic-field-induced enhancement of the vortex pinning in the overdoped regime of La2x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_4 : Relation to the microscopic phase separation

    Full text link
    In order to investigate the inhomogeneity of the superconducting (SC) state in the overdoped high-TcT_{\rm c} cuprates, we have measured the magnetic susceptibility, χ\chi, of La2x_{2-x}Srx_xCuO4_4 (LSCO) single crystals in the overdoped regime in magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis up to 7 T on warming after zero-field cooling. It has been found for xx = 0.198 and 0.219 that the temperature dependence of χ\chi in 1 T shows a plateau, that is, χ\chi is almost independent of temperature in a moderate temperature-range in the SC state. Moreover, a so-called second peak in the magnetization curve has markedly appeared in these crystals. These results indicate an anomalous enhancement of the vortex pinning and strongly suggest the occurrence of a microscopicmicroscopic phase separation into SC and normal-state regions in the overdoped high-TcT_{\rm c} cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Magnetic-susceptibility and specific-heat studies on the inhomogeneity of superconductivity in the underdoped La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_

    Full text link
    The possible inhomogeneity of superconductivity has been investigated by means of bulk-sensitive probes, using La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_ (LSCO) single crystals from the underdoped to optimally doped regime. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, chi, on field cooling and specific heat have revealed that both the absolute value of chi at 2 K, regarded as corresponding to the superconducting (SC) volume fraction in a sample, and the Sommerfeld constant, reflecting the density of states of quasiparticles at the Fermi level, exhibit significant dependence on x, namely, on the hole concentration. This is the first experimental work strongly suggesting that a phase separation into SC and normal-state regions takes place in the underodped regime of LSCO as well as in the overdoped regime.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, the version 2 has been accepted for publication in J. The association between iliocostal distance and the number of vertebral and non-vertebral fractures in women and men registered in the Canadian Database For Osteoporosis and Osteopenia (CANDOO)

    Get PDF
    BACKGROUND: The identification of new methods of evaluating patients with osteoporotic fracture should focus on their usefulness in clinical situations such that they are easily measured and applicable to all patients. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the association between iliocostal distance and vertebral and non-vertebral fractures in patients seen in a clinical setting. METHODS: Patient data were obtained from the Canadian Database of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia (CANDOO). A total of 549 patients including 508 women and 41 men participated in this cross-sectional study. There were 142 women and 18 men with prevalent vertebral fractures, and 185 women and 21 men with prevalent non-vertebral fractures. RESULTS: In women multivariable regression analysis showed that iliocostal distance was negatively associated with the number of vertebral fractures (-0.18, CI: -0.27, -0.09; adjusted for bone mineral density at the Ward's triangle, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, etidronate use, and calcium supplement use) and for the number of non-vertebral fractures (-0.09, CI: -0.15, -0.03; adjusted for bone mineral density at the trochanter, cerebrovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and etidronate use). However, in men, multivariable regression analysis did not demonstrate a significant association between iliocostal distance and the number of vertebral and non-vertebral fractures. CONCLUSIONS: The examination of iliocostal distance may be a useful clinical tool for assessment of the possibility of vertebral fractures. The identification of high-risk patients is important to effectively use the growing number of available osteoporosis therapies

    Study of the decays B->D_s1(2536)+ anti-D(*)

    Full text link
    We report a study of the decays B -> D_s1(2536)+ anti-D(*), where anti-D(*) is anti-D0, D- or D*-, using a sample of 657 x 10^6 B anti-B pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The branching fractions of the decays B+ -> D_s1(2536)+ anti-D0, B0 -> D_s1(2536)+ D- and B0 -> D_s1(2536)+ D*- multiplied by that of D_s1(2536)+ -> (D*0K+ + D*+K0) are found to be (3.97+-0.85+-0.56) x 10^-4, (2.75+-0.62+-0.36) x 10^-4 and (5.01+-1.21+-0.70) x 10^-4, respectively.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figues, submitted to PRD (RC
