    Fat residue and use-wear found on Acheulian biface and scraper associated with butchered elephant remains at the site of Revadim, Israel

    The archaeological record indicates that elephants must have played a significant role in early human diet and culture during Palaeolithic times in the Old World. However, the nature of interactions between early humans and elephants is still under discussion. Elephant remains are found in Palaeolithic sites, both open-air and cave sites, in Europe, Asia, the Levant, and Africa. In some cases elephant and mammoth remains indicate evidence for butchering and marrow extraction performed by humans. Revadim Quarry (Israel) is a Late Acheulian site where elephant remains were found in association with characteristic Lower Palaeolithic flint tools. In this paper we present results regarding the use of Palaeolithic tools in processing animal carcasses and rare identification of fat residue preserved on Lower Palaeolithic tools. Our results shed new light on the use of Palaeolithic stone tools and provide, for the first time, direct evidence (residue) of animal exploitation through the use of an Acheulian biface and a scraper. The association of an elephant rib bearing cut marks with these tools may reinforce the view suggesting the use of Palaeolithic stone tools in the consumption of large game

    Experimental and Computational Study of the New Gaseous Molecules OMnF and OMnF[Sub 2]

    The new gaseous species OMnF and OMnF2 were identified and studied by high-temperature Knudsen Cell Mass Spectrometry. Their thermochemical atomization energies were derived through the study of several all-gas equilibria in the temperature range 1735–1913 K. FTIR matrix isolation experiments together with ab initio and density functional calculations were performed to determine the molecular parameters, bond distances, and vibrational frequencies of OMnF(g) and OMnF2(g) . The results allowed us to evaluate a set of thermal functions for the new species that were used in the evaluation of the equilibrium data. The proposed atomization energies and enthalpies of formation are DaH0 + (OMnF,g)5(90365) kJ mol21, DfH298.15 + (OMnF,g)5(229765) kJ mol21, and DaH0 + (OMnF2 ,g)5(1470670) kJ mol21, DfH298.15 + (OMnF2 ,g)5(2789670) kJ mol21

    A prototype for water content measurement in partially saturated soils

    The paper presents the technological set-up and calibration of a system based on impedance spectroscopy for measuring water content in partially saturated soils. The technique adopted is relatively recent in geotechnical practice; it is used herein to characterize the electrical response of a soil specimen among two conducting electrodes upon application of an alternate voltage and the measurement of the current intensity resulting across the specimen, for frequency values in the range [500 Hz - 50 kHz]. The complex impedance of the soil specimen is due to both resistance, i.e. opposition to current, and reactance, i.e. tendency of the system to yield and retrieve energy, and it depends on the specimen water content. An on-purpose experimental plan has been conceived and is presented herein, aimed at building a calibration function for deriving the water content in pyroclastic soils from the impedance measurements. Preliminary results reveal an adequate level of repeatability of the measurements and suggest the existence of a monotonic correlation between the impedance modulus and the gravimetric water content

    Tibial tubercle avulsion fracture during sport activities in adolescent: a case report

    BACKGROUND AND AIM OF WORK: Tibial tubercle avulsion fractures (TTAF) are uncommon condition in children and adolescents. These lesions may be misdiagnosed and consequently not properly treated. Reduction and fixation is indicated if displacement is higher than 2mm or if the extensor apparatus is damaged. Authors present a case of a TTAF associated with a complete lateral patellar retinaculum lesion in a 13-year-old male adolescent non-professional basketball player. METHODS: Surgery consisted of reduction and fixation with 2 half threaded cancellous and washers; TTA was then basted and reinforced with a non absorbable suture according to Krachow technique and finally the patellar lateral retinaculum through a direct repair with absorbable material. RESULTS: Clinical evaluation after 3 years showed bone healing, a complete resolution of pain, complete range of motion, good strength and complete functionality of the operated limb. CONCLUSIONS: Misdiagnosis or delayed treatment of TTAF can often result in nonunion, functional impairment, and persistent pain. For these reasons, authors believe that a stable and quick fixation associated to specialized rehabilitation are crucial for recovery. (www.actabiomedica.it)

    The Computation of the Magnetic Field of any Axisymmetric Current Distribution—with Magnetospheric Applications

    It is shown that the vector potential A of the magnetic field of any axisymmetric electric current distribution can be expressed in the form ∑ A n (r) P 1 n (cos θ). This series is used to compute the field of two model magnetospheric ring currents; the field of one of these was previously determined by double integrations by Akasofu, Cain & Chapman. The calculation of the functions A n (r) does not require double integrations. The two sets of results are in good agreement. The first term in the series for A gives the external magnetic moment of the ring current. The magnetic field energy is calculated for the field as a whole and for each term in the series for A. The field isointensity lines are drawn, and also the field lines for the ring current and for its field combined with that of the geomagnetic dipole. They illustrate the considerable distortion of the field in the magnetosphere during magnetic storms. The series for A may also be helpful in calculating the paths of cosmic rays in the deformed magnetosphere.     Oral Lactoferrin Supplementation during Induction Chemotherapy Promotes Gut Microbiome Eubiosis in Pediatric Patients with Hematologic Malignancies

    Induction chemotherapy is the first-line treatment for pediatric patients with hematologic malignancies. However, several complications may arise, mainly infections and febrile neutropenia, with a strong impact on patient morbidity and mortality. Such complications have been shown to be closely related to alterations of the gut microbiome (GM), making the design of strategies to foster its eubiosis of utmost clinical importance. Here, we evaluated the impact of oral supplementation of lactoferrin (LF), a glycoprotein endowed with anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antimicrobial activities, on GM dynamics in pediatric oncohematologic patients during induction chemotherapy. Specifically, we conducted a double blind, placebo-controlled trial in which GM was profiled through 16S rRNA gene sequencing before and after two weeks of oral supplementation with LF or placebo. LF was safely administered with no adverse effects and promoted GM homeostasis by favoring the maintenance of diversity and preventing the bloom of pathobionts (e.g., Enterococcus). LF could, therefore, be a promising adjunct to current therapeutic strategies in these fragile individuals to reduce the risk of GM-related complications

    Early gut microbiota signature of agvhd in children given allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation for hematological disorders

    Background: The onset of acute Graft-versus-Host Disease (aGvHD) has been correlated with the gut microbiota (GM) composition, but experimental observations are still few, mainly involving cohorts of adult patients. In the current scenario where fecal microbiota transplantation has been used as a pioneer therapeutic approach to treat steroid-refractory aGvHD, there is an urgent need to expand existing observational studies of the GM dynamics in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). Aim of the present study is to explore the GM trajectory in 36 pediatric HSCT recipients in relation to aGvHD onset. Methods: Thirty-six pediatric patients, from four transplantation centers, undergoing HSCT were enrolled in the study. Stools were collected at three time points: before HSCT, at time of engraftment and > 30 days following HSCT. Changes in the GM phylogenetic structure were studied by 16S rRNA gene Illumina sequencing and phylogenetic assignation. Results: Children developing gut aGvHD had a dysbiotic GM layout before HSCT occurred. This putative aGvHD-predisposing ecosystem state was characterized by (i) reduced diversity, (ii) lower Blautia content, (iii) increase in Fusobacterium abundance. At time of engraftment, the GM structure underwent a deep rearrangement in all patients but, regardless of the occurrence of aGvHD and its treatment, it reacquired a eubiotic configuration from day 30. Conclusions: We found a specific GM signature before HSCT predictive of subsequent gut aGvHD occurrence. Our data may open the way to a GM-based stratification of the risk of developing aGvHD in children undergoing HSCT, potentially useful also to identify patients benefiting from prophylactic fecal transplantation

    Acute chest syndrome in children with sickle cell disease: Data from a national AIEOP cohort identify priority areas of intervention in a hub-and-spoke system

    : Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is a frequent cause of hospitalization in sickle cell disease (SCD). Despite advances in acute care, many settings still lack knowledge about ACS best practices. After the AIEOP Guidelines were published in 2012, suggesting standardized management in Italy, a retrospective study was performed to assess the diagnostic and therapeutic pathways of ACS in children. From 2013 to 2018, 208 ACS episodes were presented by 122/583 kids in 11 centres. 73 were male, mean age 10.9 years, 85% African, 92% HbSS or Sβ°. In our hub-and-spoke system, a good adherence to Guidelines was documented, but discrepancies between reference centres and general hospitals were noted. Improvement is needed for timely transfer to reference centres, use of incentive spirometry, oxygen therapy and pain management

    Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Europe 2014: More than 40 000 transplants annually

    A record number of 40 829 hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in 36 469 patients (15 765 allogeneic (43%), 20 704 autologous (57%)) were reported by 656 centers in 47 countries to the 2014 survey. Trends include: continued growth in transplant activity, more so in Eastern European countries than in the west; a continued increase in the use of haploidentical family donors (by 25%) and slower growth for unrelated donor HSCT. The use of cord blood as a stem cell source has decreased again in 2014. Main indications for HSCT were leukemias: 11 853 (33%; 96% allogeneic); lymphoid neoplasias; 20 802 (57%; 11% allogeneic); solid tumors; 1458 (4%; 3% allogeneic) and non-malignant disorders; 2203 (6%; 88% allogeneic). Changes in transplant activity include more allogeneic HSCT for AML in CR1, myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) and aplastic anemia and decreasing use in CLL; and more autologous HSCT for plasma cell disorders and in particular for amyloidosis. In addition, data on numbers of teams doing alternative donor transplants, allogeneic after autologous HSCT, autologous cord blood transplants are presented
