    The relation between prosociality and self-esteem from middle-adolescence to young adulthood

    The present study examined the longitudinal relations between prosociality and self-esteem. Participants were 386 (50.3% males) middle adolescents (Mage = 15.6) assessed over a 10-year period until they entered into young adulthood (Mage = 25.7). First, multivariate latent curve analysis indicated that the developmental increase of prosociality was positively related to the parallel increase of self-esteem. Second, an autoregressive cross-lagged model revealed that the direct effect of prosociality on self-esteem was statistically significant but essentially negligible. These findings corroborated from a long-term longitudinal perspective previous studies highlighting the positive correlation between the development of prosociality and self-esteem, and pointed out to the need for further investigating the relation between the two constructs. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed

    Computer user profiles in early adolescence and digitally assessed mathematics: A latent class analysis

    This study aimed at exploring the pattern of computer usage among early adolescents in Italy, about one year before the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also aimed at developing and testing models on the associations between socio-demographic characteristics, computer-user profiles, and mathematics achievement. A three-step estimation of Latent Class Analysis models and auxiliary variable models was applied to data collected on a sample of 1155 students attending grade 8 in Italy in the school year 2018–19. Four subpopulations were uncovered, which differ both with regards to their activities with computers (desktop, laptop, and tablet computers) and the likelihood of being daily users. Students’ socioeconomic and cultural background and gender predicted their pattern of computer usage, which in turn predicted digitally assessed mathematics. The main results suggested that excessive and almost exclusive use of computers for entertainment and communication purposes may depict an “at-risk'' profile in young adolescents, with possible negative consequences for their learning achievements. This profile was more likely to be found among students from more disadvantageous backgrounds and males, at least before the COVID-19 pandemic started

    Trajectories of prosocial behaviors conducive to civic outcomes during the transition to adulthood: The predictive role of family dynamics

    The current study explored the prediction of civic engagement by diverse trajectories of prosocial behaviors as well family dynamics (i.e., filial self-efficacy and relational parent-child support) across four times of assessment (from age 16-17 to age 22-23) during the transition to adulthood. Three different trajectories of prosocial behaviors were identified for 686 Italian youths: high-increasing (18%), medium-stable (48%), and low-stable (34%). An increasing pattern of change in prosocial behaviors was predicted by filial self-efficacy at age 16-17, which in turn mediated longitudinal relations to civic engagement and civic values at age 22-23. Results highlighted that during the transition to adulthood youths' beliefs about their ability to negotiate with their parents without losing autonomy and relatedness are relevant in promoting prosocial behaviors and civic involvement, especially in the context of Mediterranean countries

    Hostile, aggressive family conflict trajectories during the transition to adulthood: Associations with adolescent Big Five and emerging adulthood adjustment problems

    The goal of this longitudinal study was to investigate the relation of adolescents' Big Five factor (BFF) personality to the development of different patterns of mother-adolescent hostile, aggressive conflict (MHAC) from late adolescence to young adulthood. Furthermore, we examined the prediction of Antisocial Problems (AP) and Depressive Problems (DP) in emerging adulthood from BFF and MHAC trajectories. 385 adolescents participated in this study (age 15-16 at Time 1 and 21-22 at Time 4). Using latent growth curve analysis, Low stable (69.1%), Medium Increasing, (23.3%), and High decreasing (7.6%) trajectories were distinguished. Low adolescents' emotional stability was directly related to AP and indirectly related to DP, throughout the mediation of both Medium Increasing and High Decreasing trajectories. Agreeableness was directly negatively related to DP and indirectly throughout the mediation of High Decreasing trajectory.
