Introduction: The incidence of skin lesions increases with advancing age, especially in the head and neck region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the demographic data of head and neck skin lesions in the geriatric age group and the preferred surgical approaches. Material-Method: The records of 170 patients of an age >65 years who underwent surgical excision and reconstruction for head and neck lesions in our clinic were retrospectively reviewed. The histopathological results of the lesions and the repair method used were evaluated according to age and localization. Results: The mean age of the patients was 71.42 ± 14.20 years. The histopathologic distribution of the lesions were 75 (44.2%) basal cell carcinoma, 30 (17.6%) squamous cell carcinoma and 65 (38.2%) benign. The most frequent localizations were nose and cheeks, and the most preferred reconstruction methods were primary closure and advancement flap. None of the patients had serious complications. Conclusion: Basal cell carcinoma is the most common lesion in the head and neck region in elderly individuals. The lesions in this region can be detected in the early stage since they are in the visible region. The Surgical excision and repair with local flaps in the treatment provide very successful cosmetic results

Evaluation of the Long-Term Clinical Results of 3 Patients Implanted with the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis

This study presents the long-term clinical results of Argus II retinal prosthesis implantation in eyes with light perception and projection in 3 patients with end-stage retinitis pigmentosa. No conjunctival erosion, hypotony, or implant displacement was observed during postoperative follow-up. The electrical threshold values were lower in the macular region and higher close to the tack fixation region and peripherally. Optical coherence tomography scans showed fibrosis and retinoschisis formation at the retina-implant interface in two cases. This was attributed to mechanical and electrical effects on the tissue due to the active daily use of the system and the electrodes’ proximity to the retina. The patients were able to integrate the system into their daily lives and perform activities that they could not do before. Studies on retinal prostheses for the rehabilitation of hereditary retinal diseases are ongoing, so both social and clinical observations and experiences related to the implant are valuable

Diagnosis of Pediatric Nasopharynx Carcinoma after Recurrent Adenoidectomy

Nasopharyngeal soft tissue is most commonly adenoid hypertrophy in children. Although rare, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) does occur in children. Nasal obstruction, serous otitis media, hearing problems, and tinnitus are common signs and symptoms of all nasal diseases. For this reason, the majority of NPC presents with advanced disease at the time of the diagnosis. This paper reported 7-year-old boy who was admitted to the hospital for adenoidectomy. He had recurrent adenoidectomy operation due to nasal obstruction. NPC had been diagnosed suspecting the hard mass in the nasopharynx during the operation. Adenoidectomy is the most commonly performed surgical procedure in ENT practice and NPC is unlikely to be considered in the differential diagnosis. Surgeon should be careful about signs and symptoms that alert suspicion

The Delta(3)-imidazoline 3-oxides 1 undergo diastereoselective cycloaddition with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate 2 to give 3a,4,5,6-tetrahydroimidazo[1,5-b]isoxazoles 3. Thermal and base induced ring-opening reactions of compounds 3 were demonstrated. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

The effect of NaCl concentration on the interaction energy between feldspar minerale

    No full text
The impact of the usage of monovalent ion concentration on the selective flotation of feldspar minerals has been receiving more attention in recent years. Although many experimental studies have been reported to justify its contribution to their flotation recovery, the effect of particle-particle interaction with theoretical calculations has rarely been studied. The objective of this study was, therefore, to explain the effect of monovalent ion concentration (in particular NaCl) on interactions between albite and microcline particles with a theoretical model based on the classical DLVO. The theoretical modeling results suggested that controlling the monovalent ion concentration not only adjusts the energy barrier between particles but also can be used to determine the critical salt concentration for further tests

Intense fluoro‑2‑deoxyglucose uptake in high‑grade prostatic adenocarcinoma with negligible prostate‑specific membrane antigen expression

    Get PDF
While 68Gallium prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography/computed tomography (68Ga-PSMA) has demonstrated increasing utility in the evaluation of prostatic carcinoma, it is essential to be aware of false-negative findings. Further subtype analyses of prostate cancer will be helpful in the understanding of the underlying reasons. We herein present a high-grade prostate adenocarcinoma, with metastatic lesions showing high 18F-labeled fluoro-2-deoxyglucose uptake instead of 68Ga-PSMA
