Forest fire is one of the high-risk natural disasters in the north-western Anatolia section of Turkey. This paper suggests a new approach based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) for the development of forest fire-risk model. The proposed approach includes human factors as well as environmental factors. In this context, the 12 variables defined under anthropogenic and physical factors in the proposed model are the slope, elevation, aspect, vegetation type, crown closure, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), distance to road, settlement, and agricultural areas, population density, previous fires, and Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index (FWI). For each variable, a layer was created in the GIS database environment. GIS-layers were classified, considering the risk of potentially generating forest-fire of the relevant variables. In addition, to generate risk maps, the weights used in these GIS-layers were obtained by applying the AHP technique. One of the major results of the study shows that the rates of “extreme”, “very high”, “high”, and “moderate” risk areas are 3.87%, 63.46%, 32.13% and 0.53%, respectively. Another important result is that there are not observed the so called “no risk" and "low risk" classes in the region. The results let us to make a conclusion that the natural and human factors having significant contributions the region to be fire-prone. Yet, these results also indicate that rather than emphasizing forest-fire preparedness and mitigation, policy-makers manage forest-fires through reactive, crisis-oriented approaches. In contrast to crisis-based management plans, this study suggests that risk-based preventive plans should be developed and implemented

In this study, the university students who participate in sports have been examined in terms of their socialization relative to the participation in sport activities and the locus of control. Students are thought to be engaged in many activities in addition to their lessons during their student tenure at higher education institutions. Their participation in such activities is examined to find out whether the students take part in the mentioned activities on their own accord, or through the manipulation of others. The sample of this research consisted of students who studied at the Marmara, Istanbul Technical (ITU), and Haliç universities (n=174). Data collection was based on Şahan’s (2007) scale of “Role of the Sportive activities in Socialization Process of the University Students” (r= 0.77, r= 0.84) and Dağ’s (2002) “Scale on Locus of Control” (α= .92). The obtained results demonstrate significant differences between the items in the socialization scales and the characteristics of locus of control of the university students. Significant differences have been detected between the items of socialization scales and university students’ interest (i.e., amateur, spectator, no interest) in sports. The only significant difference in terms of gender was determined in sport and socialization skills

Bu çalışmada Erzurum iline bağlı Pazaryolu ilçesinin Karataş köyünden geçen Karataş deresinin bazı hidrobiyolojik, hidrolojik ve fizikokimyasal su kalitesi özelliklerinin belirlenmesiyle akarsu üzerinde planlanmış bir HES projesinin kurulacağı dere yatağı alanının incelenmesi ve balık popülasyonu, fizikokimyasal su kalitesi ve hidrolojik parametreler açısından değerlendirmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla Karataş köyü girişinde bulunan mansaptan akarsuyun membasına kadar su ve balık örneklemeleri yapılmış, akarsu yatağı boyunca tarım arazilerine bağlanan su kanallarında akış hızı ölçülerek her arkın debisi belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışma süresince akarsu yatağında yapılan ölçüm ve gözlemler neticesinde Karataş deresinde Salmonidae, Leuciscidae ve Cyprinidae familyalarına ait 5 farklı balık türünün yaşadığı, fizikokimyasal su kalitesinin kıta içi su kalite standartlarına göre 1. sınıf veya çok temiz statüsünde olduğu ve akarsu havzasının etrafında dere suyu kullanılarak tarımsal ürünler üretilmesi sebebiyle habitatın çok iyi korunduğu, gerek su kalitesi ve gerekse akarsu yatağının bitki örtüsü sayesinde dere yatağı üzerindeki sulama kanalları ağızlarında önemli bir doğal balık üretim ve besleme bölgesinin oluştuğu gözlemlenmiştir. Dolayısıyla bu sucul yaşam alanının korunması gerektiği ve Karataş deresi akarsu yatağı üzerinde kurulması planlanan HES projesinin gerek akarsu sucul yaşamına ve gerekse akarsu havzası karasal alanlarındaki tarımsal üretimine geri dönüşümsüz etkiler oluşturabileceği kanısına ulaşılmıştır.In this study, it was aimed to determine some hydrobiological, hydrological and physicochemical water quality characteristics of Karataş stream passing through Karataş village of Pazaryolu district of Erzurum province, to examine the creek bed area where a HEPP project planned on the river will be established and to evaluate it in terms of fish population, physicochemical water quality and hydrological parameters. For this purpose, water and fish samples were taken from the downstream at the entrance of Karataş village to the upstream of the stream, and the flow rate of each channel to agricultural garden was tried to be determined by measuring the flow rate in the water channels connected to the agricultural lands along the stream bed. As a result of the measurements and observations made in the riverbed during the study, it was found that five different fish species belonging to the families Salmonidae, Leuciscidae, and Cyprinidae live in the Karataş stream, that the physico-chemical water quality is first class or very clean according to the standards for water quality of inland waters, and that agricultural products are produced by using the stream water around the river basin. It has been observed that an important natural fish production and feeding area has been formed at the mouths of the irrigation channels on the stream bed, thanks to both the water quality and the vegetation of the stream bed. Therefore, it has been concluded that this aquatic habitat should be protected and that the HEPP project planned to be built on the riverbed of Karataş creek may cause irreversible effects both on the aquatic life of the river and on the agricultural production in the terrestrial areas of the river basin

Turkey is one of the main fig fruits producers in the World. The protection of the fig fruit quality in the chains from harvesting to marketing is very important. Vibration often causes some damages to perishable fruits in transportation and reduces their quality. The fruit injury due to vibration is related to the transportation characteristics of vehicles, packaging boxes and the conditions of the roads. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of packaging box by different materials to decrease the damages of vertical vibration on the quality of three fresh fig varieties (Yediveren, Sarilop and Bursa Black) during transportation. The experiments were carried out in two stages. In the first stage; the frequency and acceleration values of truck were determined during the real transportation. In the second stage, these values were applied on the simulator (shaker) to examine the effect of vibration on fresh figs packaged with three different boxes. The results showed that the cardboard packaging box was not proper for transporting of the fresh fig fruits in all road conditions. The mass loss of fresh fig fruits packed with cardboard box were found to be 2.5 times more than extruded and expanded polystyrene boxes at 16 Hz frequency and 2.54 m s-2 acceleration. Sarilop fig variety was more damaged under the off-road. For long highway road conditions, Bursa Black fig variety was found the most affected fig variety

Objective. In the present study, since PON1 is known as an HDL-associated antioxidant enzyme that inhibits the oxidative modification of LDL and oxidative stress plays a role in the pathogenesis of mesenteric ischemia, we investigated the changes in PON1 activity and lipid profile in an experimental ischemic colitis model. Methods. Forty male Wistar albino rats were divided into two groups: the control group (N = 15) and the experimental group (N = 25). All animals were anesthetized with ether and ketamine anesthesia to undergo a midline laparotomy. Ischemic colitis was induced by marginal vessel ligation in the splenic flexura (devascularization process). A sham laparotomy was performed in the control group. All animals were sacrificed on the seventh postoperative day. Oxidative stress marker (malonyldialdehyde, MDA), lipid profile, and paraoxonase (PON-1) and arylesterase activities were determined. Histopathological evaluation was done under light microscopy, after sectioning and staining with hematoxyline and eosin. Statistical analysis was conducted using Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U test, and P 0.05).Conclusions. PON1 and arylesterase play an important role in the pathophysiology of ischemic colitis

AimTo constitute an experimental rat model by using human VEGF monoclonal antibody bevacizumab, for observation of renal side effects of this treatment.Materials and MethodsThirtysix adult female Wistar albino rats has been divided as two main groups: “3 days” and “21 days” . Each group has been divided in three; bevacizumab 10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg were administered intravenously from the tail veins of the two subgroups and 1 mg/kg saline was administered to the third subgroup as control. Urine for 24 hours for detection of proteinuria and blood samples for detection of renal funtions were collected before, third day and 21st day of the drug administration and rats were sacrified at third and 21st days for pathological examination of kidneys.ResultsTwenty four hours urine protein excretion, creatinin excretion and urine protein/creatinin ratio were demonstrated as significantly increased on the third day of the rats administered 10 mg/kg bevacizumab; however, any significant increase of proteinuria couldn’t be shown on the 21 days group rats administered neither 10 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg. Pathological examination of rats sacrified on third day demonstrate the significant increase of bowman capsule gap and interstitial inflamation as correlated with the dosage of the drug. The thickness of vessel wall was observed on the pathological examination of rats sacrified on 21st day.ConclusionIt has been shown that bevacizumab administration of 10 mg/kg for three days is proper for constitution of an experimental rat model
