    Evaluation of thermal stratification and systematic monitoring of water temperature are required for lake management. Water temperature profiling requires temperature measurements through a water column to assess the level of thermal stratification which impacts oxygen content, microbial growth, and distribution of fish. The objective of this research was to develop and assess the functions of a water temperature profiling system mounted on a multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The buoyancy apparatus mounted on the UAV allowed vertical takeoff and landing on the water surface for in situ measurements. The sensor node that was integrated with the UAV consisted of a microcontroller unit, a temperature sensor, and a pressure sensor. The system measured water temperature and depth from seven pre-selected locations in a lake using autonomous navigation with autopilot control. Measurements at 100 ms intervals were made while the UAV was descending at 2 m/s until it landed on water surface. Water temperature maps of three consecutive depths at each location were created from the measurements. The average surface water temperature at 0.3 m was 22.5 °C, while the average water temperature at 4 m depth was 21.5 °C.     Puffy Frontal Edema: A Serious Life-Threatening Finding of Pott'S Puffy Tumor: Case Report

    Osteomyelitis of the frontal bone, otherwise known as Pott's puffy tumour, is a rare complication of frontal sinusitis or direct injury to the frontal bone in adolescent age group. Potts Puffy tumor can be complicated with cortical vein thrombosis, epidural abscess, subdural empyema, and brain abscess. Venous drainage of the frontal sinus flowing through diplopic veins, which have communication with the dural venous plexus is the cause of venous thrombosis. Through this venous system septic thrombi can potentially evolve and propagate from foci within the frontal sinus. We aimed to emphasize in this case report that Pott's puffy tumour should be considered in the differential diagnosis in a patient with swelling on the forehead, due to its high mortality rate of about 17%.WoSScopu

    Autonomous In Situ Measurements of Noncontaminant Water Quality Indicators and Sample Collection with a UAV

    The objective of this research was to conduct in situ measurements of electrical conductivity (EC), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and temperature, and collect water samples simultaneously at different depths using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The UAV system consists of a hexacopter, water sampling cartridges (WSC), and a sensor node. Payload capacity and endurance of the UAV were determined using an indoor test station. The UAV was able to produce 106 N of thrust for 10 min with 6.3 kg of total takeoff weight. The thrust-to-weight ratio of the UAV was 2.5 at 50% throttle. The decision for activating the water sampling cartridges and sensor node was made autonomously from an onboard microcontroller. System functions were verified at 0.5 m and 3.0 m depths in 6 locations over a 1.1 ha agricultural pond. Average measurements of EC, pH, DO, and temperature at 0.5 m depth were 42 µS/cm, 5.6, 8.2 mg/L, and 31 °C, while the measurements at 3 m depth were 80 µS/cm, 5.3, 5.34 mg/L, and 24 °C, respectively. The UAV-assisted autonomous water sampling system (UASS) successfully activated the WSC at each sampling location. The UASS would reduce the duration of water quality assessment and help practitioners and researchers to conduct observations with lower operational costs. The developed system would be useful for sampling and monitoring of water reservoirs, lakes, rivers, and ponds periodically or after natural disasters

    In Situ Water Quality Measurements Using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) System

    An unmanned aerial vehicle-assisted water quality measurement system (UAMS) was developed for in situ surface water quality measurement. A custom-built hexacopter was equipped with an open-source electronic sensors platform to measure the temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), and pH of water. Electronic components of the system were coated with a water-resistant film, and the hexacopter was assembled with flotation equipment. The measurements were made at thirteen sampling waypoints within a 1.1 ha agricultural pond. Measurements made by an open-source multiprobe meter (OSMM) attached to the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) were compared to the measurements made by a commercial multiprobe meter (CMM). Percent differences between the OSMM and CMM measurements for DO, EC, pH, and temperature were 2.1 %, 3.43 %, 3.76 %, and <1.0 %, respectively. The collected water quality data was used to interpret the spatial distribution of measurements in the pond. The UAMS successfully made semiautonomous in situ water quality measurements from predetermined waypoints. Water quality maps showed homogeneous distribution of measured constituents across the pond. The concept presented in this paper can be applied to the monitoring of water quality in larger surface waterbodies

    The Value Of Mean Platelet Volume In The Determination Of Community Acquired Pneumonia In Children

    Background Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a reflection of platelet size, which has been shown to correlate with platelet function and activation. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether MPV could be used for the diagnostic tool of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and for making the decision for hospitalization. Methods The computerized records of children aged 1 to 18 years who were diagnosed with CAP based on WHO criteria were evaluated. A standard protocol was followed, and patients with severe CAP were hospitalized. CAP patients were divided into two groups based on disease severity. The control group consisted of age and gender matched healthy children during the study period. Values for hemoglobin, white blood cell count (WBC), platelet count, MPV and C-reactive protein (CRP) obtained on first presentation were recorded for each patient. Results A total of 196 patients were diagnosed with CAP during the study period, 108 (55.1%) of which had severe disease, which required hospitalization (Group 1a), while the remaining 88 (44.9%) were followed-up as outpatients (Group 1b). The control group consisted of 100 healthy children (Group 2). Patients with CAP had lower MPV values than their healthy counterparts (7.1±0.68 vs. 8.31±1.2 fL; p<0.001). MPV value was significantly higher in hospitalized CAP patients compared to outpatients (7.32±0.71 vs. 6.83±0.5 fL; p=0.012). ROC curve analysis suggested that MPV level cut-off point for making a diagnosis of CAP was 8.1 fL, with a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of 91%, 51%, 80.8% and 70.5%, respectively. Conclusions Our findings suggest that MPV may be a useful predictor for diagnosed CAP but low specificity and NPV rates may lead to the false-negative diagnosis.PubMedWoSScopu

    Wegener's granulomatosis which is rarely seen in children is an idiopathic necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis, affecting primarily paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, lungs, kidneys and joints. In this article, we report a very rare case of eight-year-old boy presenting with Wegener's granulomatosis of paranasal sinuses without lung, kidney and any other organ involvement. We discuss the diagnosis, treatment and the differential diagnosis of paranasal sinus involvement in Wegener's granulomatosis in the light of literature data.WoSScopu

    Clinic Features, Follow-Up And Treatment Options Of Acute Paronychia In Children: Hacettepe University Experience

    Objective: Paronychia, the inflammation of proximal and lateral nail folds and, is the most commonly encountered hand infection. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the clinical features and treatment options of paronychia in our center. Material and Methods: Patients diagnosed with acute paronychia from June 2014 to December 2016 in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Department of Hacettepe University ihsan Dogramaci Children Hospital were included into the study. Patients' age, gender, underlying disease, physical examination findings, laboratory parameters, hospitalization status, treatment choices (surgery/antibiotic treatment) and durations, and complications were evaluated. Results: Seventy-five patients (37 male, 49.3%) with a median age of 8 years (0-18) were enrolled into the study. The patients were divided into two groups as immunocompetent (62, 82.7%) and immunocompromised (primary or secondary immunodeficiency, 13, 17.3%). Two of the immuncompromised patients (14.3%) and eight of immunocompetent patients underwent surgery drainage because of abscess formation. Five patients were hospitalized, three of whom (21.4%) were immunocompromised and two of whom (3.3%) were immunocompetent (p=0.01). Conclusion: Immune response of the patients diagnosed with paronychia is the main guide for treatment and follow plan.Wo
