Debord: from spectacle to simulacrum

A teoria debordiana do espetáculo foi concebida como crítica da separação entre imagem e realidade e, também, como crítica do midiocentrismo. As suas raízes teóricas remontam à experiência das vanguardas estéticas, à teoria da reificação de G. Lukács e às reflexões de H. Lefébvre sobre a vida cotidiana. Posteriormente, o pós-modernismo apropriou-se do legado debordiano para desenvolver, num registro teórico diferente, a teoria do simulacro.Debord’s theory about the spectacle was conceived as a critique of the split between image and reality and also as a critique of mediacentrism. Its theoretical roots lie in the experience of aesthetic vanguards, in the theory of reification of G. Lukacs and to the reflections of H. Lefébvre on everyday life. Later, postmodernism appropriated Debord’s legacy to develop, in a different theoretical register, the theory of the simulacrum

The young Boal and censorship before and today

O artigo parte da análise da peça teatral Filha moça, escrita em 1956 pelo dramaturgo Augusto Boal, para ser montada pelo Teatro Experimental do Negro. A peça, que foi totalmente censurada antes mesmo de ser encenada, a exemplo de vários espetáculos da época, dificilmente seria censurada hoje. Embora não se apresenta de forma brutal e direta, como naquela época, a censura da atualidade aparece de outras maneiras mais sutis, mas nem por isso menos eficazes. Os editais, que derivam do poder econômico e do controle público ou privado dos meios de divulgação artística, são, por ironia, uma conquista da classe teatral e também uma forma de censura. The paper analysis the play Filha Moça [Young Daughter], written in 1956 by dramatist Augusto Boal, to be performed by the Teatro Experimental do Negro [The Blackman Experimental Theater]. The play, just like many others at the time, was completely forbidden by the censorship even before it opened, something hard to imagine happening nowadays. Although censorship now may not be as brutal and direct, it still exists and it works through subtler methods as equally effective. Curatorial projects, derivated from the economical power and public or private control of the arts, are, ironically, also a theater class achievement but also a form of censorship

Reception: methodological divergences between Adorno and Lazarsfeld

Lazarsfeld convidou Adorno para, juntos, realizarem uma pesquisa sobre a audição de música no rádio. Nada deu certo, tornando a colaboração impossível. Na raiz da discórdia está a divergência entre a metodologia funcionalista de Lazarsfeld e a teoria crítica de Adorno. Este criticava no primeiro o apego à imediatez da escuta, sem levar em conta a categoria dialética da mediação.Th is paper discusses the meeting that took place between Paul F. Lazarsfeld and Th eodor W. Adorno, who were working together to come up with a research about music listening through the radio. Th e attempt to reconcile “American empiricism with European theory”, proved to be, however, impossible. During the research, the diff erences between Lazarsfeld’s positivistic procedures and Adorno’s dialectics became an obstacle to the project’s completion. Th is episode came to be one of the twentieth century most fascinating chapters on the debates about methods in communication studies

O ensaio centra-se principalmente na obra maior do autor, Le dieu caché, para buscar a compreensão da metodologia do autor.The matter of the subject in the communicational process is understood by Goldmann according to the theoretical framework derived from his own method – the genetic structuralism. It set him apart from existentialist perspectives (that favor the individual subject), as much as from structuralist ones (that ontologizes the language). The Goldmannian thesis of a trans-individual subject restores the relationships between social life and cultural creation in a very specific framing. OS ESTUDOS literários de Lucien Goldmann conheceram duas fases distintas. Na primeira, apoiando-se principalmente nas contribuições do jovem Lukács (A alma e as formas e Teoria do romance), Goldmann buscou estabelecer uma homologia entre a forma romanesca e a vida social e, ainda, recorrendo à História e consciência de classe, procurou dar um tratamento historicista e dialético àqueles textos juvenis do pensador húngaro, ao interpretar a literatura como expressão articulada das "visões do mundo" das diversas classes e grupos sociais. Numa segunda fase, marcada pelo pessimismo e pela influência das idéias estruturalistas, então em voga, os ensaios goldmannianos afastaram-se da busca de mediações entre a obra e a vida social. Surpreendido pelo vendaval de 1968, Goldmann empreendeu um movimento autocrítico, interrompido pela morte prematura em 1970.LUCIEN Goldmann's literary studies fall into two distinct phases. In the first, relying mainly on contributions of the young Lukács (Soul and form and The theory of the novel), Goldmann sought to establish a homology between the novelistic form and social life. Moreover, falling back on History and class-consciousness, he sought to give a historicist and dialectical treatment to the youthful texts of the Hungarian thinker by interpreting literature as an articulate expression of the "views of the world" held by various classes and social groups. In the second phase, marked by pessimism and the influence of structuralist ideas, then in vogue, Goldmann's essays ceased to seek mediations between the written work and social life. Taken by surprise by the maelstrom of 1968, Goldmann engaged himself in a self-critical movement, interrupted by his premature death in 1970
