“How could this happen to us?” French Community and Sault Ste. Marie’s English Resolution
In January, 1990 Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, a northern city with over 200 hundred years of French settlement, passed a resolution declaring its city government would operate in English-only. Accounts of how this language specific resolution came about are often, even inescapably overshadowed by the character and actions of the city’s brash, defiant Mayor, Joe Fratesi. This paper presents an expanded account of events, wherein Mayor Fratesi is one of many actors, albeit one ready to maximize a political opportunity.
To existing accounts, this paper adds the voices and experiences of those within the French community, ones largely absent in the published record. While those outside the Sault saw the resolution as threatening to Canada’s linguistic and cultural aspirations, within the Sault it was clearly a local matter
Chiral and chemical oscillations in a simple dimerization model
We consider the APED model (activation-polymerization-epimerization- depolymerization) for describing the emergence of chiral solutions within a non-catalytic framework for chiral polymerization. The minimal APED model for dimerization can lead to the spontaneous appearance of chiral oscillations and we describe in detail the nature of these oscillations in the enantiomeric excess, which are the consequence of oscillations of the concentrations of the associated chemical species
Mechanically induced homochirality in nucleated enantioselective polymerization
Understanding how biological homochirality may have emerged during chemical evolution remains a challenge for origin of life research. In keeping with this goal, we introduce and solve numerically a kinetic rate equation model of nucleated cooperative enantioselective polymerization in closed systems. The microreversible scheme includes (i) solution phase racemization of the monomers, (ii) linear chain growth by stepwise monomer attachment, in both the nucleation and elongation phases, and (iii) annealing or fusion of homochiral chains. Mechanically induced breakage of the longest chains maintains the system out of equilibrium and drives a breakage-fusion recycling mechanism. Spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking (SMSB) can be achieved starting from small initial enantiomeric excesses due to the intrinsic statistical fluctuations about the idealized racemic composition. The subsequent chiral amplification confirms the model’s capacity for absolute asymmetric synthesis, and without chiral cross-inhibition and without explicit autocatalysis
Global Dental Equipment: How Variance Analysis Can Help a Startup Business Survive Growing Pains
This educational case study describes an entrepreneurial crisis at Global Dental Equipment (GDE), a company selling used dental equipment. GDE had grown from a startup and reached a volume of activity such that the founder was no longer able to personally manage all of the dayto- day aspects of the business. The evolution of GDE from startup to rapid growth to bringing in outside investors and a Board of Directors is described. During its early years, GDE’s accounting system supported historical reporting, compliance, and taxation requirements. However, GDE reached a point where it needed to use more detailed and relevant management accounting information to continue growing and transition through the entrepreneurial crisis. Such information can be provided by budgets and the variance analysis of actual results against budget. This case study is designed for undergraduate students undertaking their second course in cost/management accounting and/or graduate management accounting students

Stoney Creek Ecological Restoration Post-Project Appraisal: Soil Quality Survey
The state of the soil in the riparian area around an urban stream, Stoney Creek, in Burnaby, British Columbia was investigated. This site had recently been disturbed by a salmon habitat restoration project. Our study aimed to provide a first set of data for post-project soil quality assessments in this region. Four soil pits were excavated and various soil samples were collected. These samples were transported to the Soil Science Lab at Simon Fraser University for laboratory analysis, where soil texture, bulk density, acidity, water content and erodibility were assessed. Although no root growth limiting bulk density and pH levels were found, the results indicated that soil compaction had some effect on bulk density, acidity and water content. This set of soil data is limited in its comprehensiveness and therefore future soil quality monitoring projects are recommended
