Employer-Provided Health Insurance and Labor Supply of Married Women

This work presents new evidence on the effect of husbands’ health insurance on wives’ labor supply. Previous cross-sectional studies have estimated a significant negative effect of spousal coverage on wives’ labor supply. However, these estimates potentially suffer from bias due to the simultaneity of wives’ labor supply and the health insurance status of their husbands. This paper attempts to obtain consistent estimates by using several panel data methods. In particular, the likely correlation between unobserved personal characteristics of husbands and wives—such as preferences for work—and potential joint job choice decisions can be controlled by using panel data on intact marriages. The findings, using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth and the Current Population Survey, suggest that the negative effect of spousal coverage on labor supply found in cross-sections results mainly from spousal sorting and selection. Once unobserved heterogeneity is controlled for, a relatively smaller estimated effect of spousal coverage on wives’ labor supply remains.Health insurance, Labor supply, Marriage, Panel data

Health Insurance Tax Credits and Health Insurance Coverage of Low-Earning Single Mothers

The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 introduced a refundable tax credit for low-income working families who purchased health insurance coverage for their children. This health insurance tax credit (HITC) existed during tax years 1991, 1992, and 1993, and was then rescinded. We use Current Population Survey data and a difference-in-differences approach to estimate the HITC’s effect on private health insurance coverage of low-earning single mothers. The findings suggest that during 1991–1993, the health insurance coverage of single mothers was about 6 percentage points higher than it would have been in the absence of the HITC.Retirement; Health insurance; Low-wage workers; Tax credits and subsidies

AN EFFECTIVE RISK-PREVENTIVE MODEL PROPOSAL FOR OCCUPATIONAL ACCIDENTS AT SHIPYARDS

According to the statistics of occupational accidents, it is observed that the number of accidents occurred in shipbuilding industry is high and the rate of deaths and serious injuries among these accidents is higher than in other industries. However, the number of the studies to prevent these accidents in both industrial and scientific practices is considerably low. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop an efficient risk preventive model in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations for industrial organizations. The approach proposed in this study differs from those described in the literature, because it is based on fuzzy set theory in order to cope with uncertainties on probability and severity definitions in terms of occupational health and safety. Furthermore, in this paper, risk severity is considered in terms of harm to worker, harm to environment, and harm to hardware, whereas in the literature, risk severity is generally considered solely in terms of only harm to worker. Then, risk magnitude is obtained by utilizing fuzzy inference system. The proposed approach is applied to a shipyard located in the Marmara Region in order to illustrate the applicability of the model

Investigation of the changes observed in scrotal circumference, and native and post-thaw semen characteristics in karayaka rams during the breeding and nonbreeding seasons

NO ABSTRACT AVAILABLEThe aim of the present study was to investigate and compare the impact of the breeding (BS) and non-breeding (NBS) seasons on scrotal circumference, and native and post-thaw semen characteristics in Karayaka rams. Six (6) Karayaka rams were used as semen donors, and ejaculates were collected with the aid of an artificial vagina during the BS (October-November) and NBS (April-May). Interestingly, sperm freezability was found to be higher in the NBS, when compared to the BS, and the sperm motility rate (36.00±2.74%, 55.0±3.24%) and percentage of abnormal sperm (44.00±1.90%, 57.00±2.09%) were found to significantly differ with season (P<0.05). In conclusion, the post-freezing sperm motility was better during the non-breeding season. Post-thaw sperm abnormality was higher during non-breading season. However, if ram semen is used fresh for AI, it can be collected and used during both during the breeding and non-breeding season

EVALUATION OF PIPE CUTTING TECHNOLOGIES IN SHIPBUILDING

Pipes are the most significant ones of the components which constitutes the vessel body. Pipes are fabricated in piping plant at shipyard and exposed to some processes such as cutting, bending, hydrostatic tests, galvanizing and so on. Cutting operation is also vital process among the other ones since it is very crucial that the cutting surfaces are flat and the right angles. In shipyards, there are various pipe cutting methods such as plasma, oxygen, metal saw, band saw and abrasive cutting wheel. Shipyard production department desires to implement the most appropriate pipe cutting method in order to operate properly and effectively. The purpose of this study is to present the most convenient pipe cutting method according to the determined criteria. For this, fuzzy TOPSIS technique which is one of the most used fuzzy Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods in the literature is employed. The importance degrees of the criteria are evaluated by using fuzzy AHP. As a result of the presented study, the most appropriate pipe cutting method is determined for ship building industry

Kickboks sporcularının sağlıklı beslenmeye ilişkin tutumlarının incelenmesi

Bu çalışmanın amacı, kickboks sporcularının sağlıklı beslenmeye ilişkin tutumlarının incelenmesidir. Araştırmaya Samsun ilinde aktif spor yapan ile 66 erkek, 41 kadın toplam 107 kickboks sporcusu katılmıştırBu çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak, Sağlıklı Beslenmeye İlişkin Tutum Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Veriler SPSS 22 paket programına kullanılarak analiz edildi. İstatistiksel değerler %95 güven aralığında ve p0,05). Ortalamalar da ise kadın katılımcıların sağlıklı beslenme tutumu toplam puanı erkeklere göre daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Eğitim durumuna göre sağlıklı beslenme tutumu toplam puan karşılaştırılmasına bakıldığında anlamlı fark ortaya çıkmamıştır (p>0,05). Ortalamalara bakıldığında lise eğitim düzeyine sahip katılımcıların sağlıklı beslenme tutumu toplam puanı lisans eğitim düzeyine göre daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Yaşadığı yere göre sağlıklı beslenme tutumu toplam puan karşılaştırılmasına bakıldığında anlamlı fark ortaya çıkmamıştır (p>0,05). Sağlıklı beslenme tutumu toplam puan, yaş ve VKİ arasında anlamlı ilişki saptanmamıştır (p>0,05). Kickboks sporcularına beslenme alışkanlıklarının kazandırılması müsabaka ve antrenman öncesi ve sonrası beslenme programlarının yapılması sporcuların performans gelişimlerine katkı sağlayacaktır
