    Ant colony optimization and its application to the vehicle routing problem with pickups and deliveries

    Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is a population-based metaheuristic that can be used to find approximate solutions to difficult optimization problems. It was first introduced for solving the Traveling Salesperson Problem. Since then many implementations of ACO have been proposed for a variety of combinatorial optimization. In this chapter, ACO is applied to the Vehicle Routing Problem with Pickup and Delivery (VRPPD). VRPPD determines a set of vehicle routes originating and ending at a single depot and visiting all customers exactly once. The vehicles are not only required to deliver goods but also to pick up some goods from the customers. The objective is to minimize the total distance traversed. The chapter first provides an overview of ACO approach and presents several implementations to various combinatorial optimization problems. Next, VRPPD is described and the related literature is reviewed, Then, an ACO approach for VRPPD is discussed. The approach proposes a new visibility function which attempts to capture the “delivery” and “pickup” nature of the problem. The performance of the approach is tested using well-known benchmark problems from the literature

    An ant colony algorithm for the mixed vehicle routing problem with backhauls

    The Vehicle Routing Problem with Pickup and Delivery (VRPPD) is a variant of the Vehicle Routing Problem where the vehicles are not only required to deliver goods but also to pick up some goods from the customers. The Mixed Vehicle Routing Problem with Backhauls (MVRPB) is a special case of VRPPD where each customer has either a delivery or a pickup demand to be satisfied and the customers can be visited in any order along the route. Given a fleet of vehicles and a set of customers with known pickup or delivery demands MVRPB determines a set of vehicle routes originating and ending at a single depot and visiting all customers exactly once. The objective is to minimize the total distance traversed with the least number of vehicles. For this problem, we propose an Ant Colony Optimization algorithm with a new visibility function which attempts to capture the “delivery” and “pickup” nature of the problem. Our numerical tests to compare the performance of the proposed approach with those of the well-known benchmark problems reveal that the proposed approach provides encouraging results

    Ant colony optimization approach for the capacitated vehicle routing problem with simultaneous delivery and pick-up

    We propose an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm to the NPhard Vehicle Routing Problem with Simultaneous Delivery and Pick-up (VRPSDP). In VRPSDP, commodities are delivered to customers from a single depot utilizing a fleet of identical vehicles and empty packages are collected from the customers and transported back to the depot. The objective is to minimize the total distance traveled. The algorithm is tested with the well-known benchmark problems from the literature. The experimental study indicates that our approach produces comparable results to those of the benchmark problems in the literature

    A taxonomy for emergency service station location problem

    The emergency service station (ESS) location problem has been widely studied in the literature since 1970s. There has been a growing interest in the subject especially after 1990s. Various models with different objective functions and constraints have been proposed in the academic literature and efficient solution techniques have been developed to provide good solutions in reasonable times. However, there is not any study that systematically classifies different problem types and methodologies to address them. This paper presents a taxonomic framework for the ESS location problem using an operations research perspective. In this framework, we basically consider the type of the emergency, the objective function, constraints, model assumptions, modeling, and solution techniques. We also analyze a variety of papers related to the literature in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the taxonomy and to get insights for possible research directions

    Conceptual design of an e-marketplace for small and medium enterprises in the Turkish machinery industry

    This paper reports on the results of a study carried out in the Turkish machinery industry. The purpose of the study was to identify the benefits the sector can seize from e-business and to develop a conceptual framework for potential e-business applications. We analysed the current state of e-business use in the machinery industry in order to understand the future requirements and application opportunities and to come up with a conceptual e-business design that would suit both the needs and the characteristics of the sector. The study included those companies, which are members of the Machine Manufacturers’ Association (MMA) in Turkey. Information about the existing applications and future requirements was obtained from the results of a survey conducted among the member companies. Statistically adequate number of responses was obtained to make the results representative of the machine industry. Web sites of the member companies were also reviewed for further information gathering. Results indicated that most of the companies are Small and Medium Enterprises(SME) and it would be better for them to carry out certain operations through an e-market specifically designed for the sector. The proposed conceptual e-market design is based on the characteristics of the industry emerging from the survey

    An ant colony algorithm for the sequential testing problem under precedence constraints.

    We consider the problem of minimum cost sequential testing of a series (parallel) system under precedence constraints that can be modeled as a nonlinear integer program. We develop and implement an ant colony algorithm for the problem. We demonstrate the performance of this algorithm for special type of instances for which the optimal solutions can be found in polynomial time. In addition, we compare the performance of the algorithm with a special branch and bound algorithm for general instances. The ant colony algorithm is shown to be particularly effective for larger instances of the problem

    Development of a machine tool selection system using analytic hierarchy process

    The selection of appropriate machines is one of the most critical decisions in the design and development of an efficient production environment. In this study, we propose a decision support system for machine tool selection using an effective algorithm, the analytic hierarchy process. In the selection process, we first consider qualitative decision criteria that are related to the machine properties. Reliability and precision analyses may be included in the detailed evaluation procedure. Furthermore, the decision-maker may take into account the economical considerations through cost analysis. In addition, the robustness of the selection procedure may be evaluated using sensitivity analysis. An illustrative example of machine tool selection using the proposed methodology and the software implementation are provided

    Minimizing the carbon emissions on road networks

    The models and algorithms developed for transportation planning, vehicle routing, path finding and the software that utilize them are usually based on distance and constant travel times between the relevant locations and aim at minimizing total distance or travel time . However, constant travel time assumption is not realistic on road networks as the traffic conditions may vary from morning/evening rush hours to off-peak noon/night hours, from the weekends to business days, even from one season to another. Thus, distance/time based optimization does not exactly reflect the real fuel consumptions, hence the actual costs; neither can they be used to accurately account for the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A distance/constant time based optimization model may even yield an infeasible solution when time-windows exist or the route length is time limited. In this study, we first analyze the peculiar characteristics of the Greenest Path Problem (GPP) where the objective is to find the least GHG generating path from an origin to a destination on the road network. We then propose a fast heuristic method for determining the greenest path, by incorporating fuel consumption and GHG emission objectives. Finally, we integrate the proposed algorithm into the Green Vehicle Routing Problem that minimizes the GHG emissions rather than the total distance or travel time. The developed heuristic is benchmarked against the existing algorithms by using synthetic traffic data on a real road network to illustrate potential savings and sustainability benefits

    Planeamiento Estratégico y Gestión Empresarial del Centro Comercial Mega Centro 1040 en el año 2018

    La presente investigación tuvo como propósito fundamental determinar la influencia del planeamiento estratégico en la gestión empresarial Centro Comercial Mega Centro 1040 en el año 2018. La investigación utilizó el método científico, el tipo de investigación es aplicada, el nivel es correlacional, el diseño es no experimental – transeccional – correlacional. La población estuvo conformada por 75 microempresarios del centro comercial en estudio, se aplicó una muestra censal. La técnica que se usó fue la encuesta con su respectivo instrumento, el cuestionario. Para la construcción del instrumento se utilizó la escala de Likert, conteniendo 24 ítems basados en las dimensiones de las variables. Los resultados con respecto a las dimensiones de la variable planeamiento estratégico demostraron que, más del 78% de los microempresarios desconocían en cuanto a la filosofía estratégica del centro comercial; con respecto a la dimensión auditoría externa e interna, sólo el 4 % de los microempresarios afirmaron estar totalmente de acuerdo que existe una gestión eficiente; en relación a la dimensión generación y selección de estrategias, sólo el 8% de los microempresarios afirmaron estar de acuerdo que las estrategias que aplican eventualmente son efectivas; asimismo, los resultados en relación a las dimensiones de la variable gestión empresarial demostraron que, más del 90% afirmaron estar de acuerdo que se deben tomar acciones correctivas para mejorar la gestión actual. La investigación concluye demostrando que: el planeamiento estratégico influye positiva y significativamente en la gestión empresarial (Rho de Spearman de 0.623), lo cual significa que, de implementarse un plan estratégico mejorará la gestión empresarial del centro comercial.Tesi
