Confronting, on the one hand, anthropologists theses, with a tendency to see in Mafia a plural and informal structure, spread out territorially, very dependant on local chiefs (cosche) and meeting for task-oriented reasons, to, on the other, the palermitan judges who have a certain tendency to consider Mafia as a Cosa Nostra centralised organisation type, the author shows that a dynamic analysis allows to go further than confrontation. So, by studying the adaptive capacities of the organisation and the different vectors in its use (violence, market), he displaces the debate's stakes, following a weberian problematic, rethinking the Mafia system in its relationship to government
Mythical numbers and the proceeds of organised crime: estimating mafia proceeds in Italy
Organised crime is a field vulnerable to mythical numbers, i.e. exaggerated estimates lacking empirical support, but acquiring acceptance through repetition. The figures on mafia proceeds in Italy are a striking example of this problem. This study proposes an estimation of mafia proceeds in Italy from nine criminal activities (sexual exploitation of women, illicit firearms trafficking, drug trafficking, counterfeiting, the illicit cigarette trade, illicit gambling, illicit waste disposal, loan sharking, and extortion racketeering) by region and type of mafia (Cosa Nostra, Camorra,\u2018Ndrangheta, Apulian
mafias, and other mafias). The results estimate yearly mafia proceeds at approximately \u20ac10.7 bn (0.7% of the Italian GDP), discussing the impact on the regional and national economies and the differences among the types of mafias as to their geographical sources of revenue
Wild food plants of popular use in Sicily
In the present work the authors report the result of their food ethnobotanical researches, which have been carried out in Sicily during the last thirty years. Data concerning 188 wild species used in the traditional Sicilian cuisine are reported. The authors underline those species that are partially or completely unknown for their culinary use and they illustrate other species that local inhabitants suggested in the prevention or treatment of symptomatologies caused by a refined diet, poor in vegetables. These data want to contribute to avoid the loss of traditional knowledge on uses and recipes concerning wild food botanicals, and to encourage further studies for those species that have not yet been sufficiently researched in their food chemical and nutritional profile. These studies may also suggest new applications for a few botanicals in medico-nutritional fields. The work includes also a short review of the seaweeds and mushrooms traditionally gathered and consumed in Sicily
The World Health Organization foresees the
elimination of HCV infection by 2030. In light of this and the curre
nt, nearly worldwide, restriction in direct-acting agents
(DAA) accessibility due to their high price, we aimed to evaluate
the cost-effectiveness of two alternative DAA treatment
policies: Policy 1 (universal): treat all patients, regardless of the fibrosis stage; Policy 2 (prioritized): treat only priori
tized
patients and delay treatment of the
remaining patients until reaching stage F3. T
he model was based on patient’s data
from the PITER cohort. We demonstrated that extending HC
V treatment of patients in any fibrosis stage improves health
outcomes and is cost-effective
Las capas medias en Italia
