    The relativistic problem of fermions subject to a PT-symmetric potential in the presence of position-dependent mass is reinvestigated. The influence of the PT-symmetric potential in the continuity equation and in the orthonormalization condition are analyzed.     Alcohol drinking and mammary cancer: Pathogenesis and potential dietary preventive alternatives

    Alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, increasing linearly even with a moderate consumption and irrespectively of the type of alcoholic beverage. It shows no dependency from other risk factors like menopausal status, oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, or genetic history of breast cancer. The precise mechanism for the effect of drinking alcohol in mammary cancer promotion is still far from being established. Studies by our laboratory suggest that acetaldehyde produced in situ and accumulated in mammary tissue because of poor detoxicating mechanisms might play a role in mutational and promotional events. Additional studies indicated the production of reactive oxygen species accompanied of decreases in vitamin E and GSH contents and of glutathione transferase activity. The resulting oxidative stress might also play a relevant role in several stages of the carcinogenic process. There are reported in literature studies showing that plasmatic levels of estrogens significantly increased after alcohol drinking and that the breast cancer risk is higher in receptor ER-positive individuals. Estrogens are known that they may produce breast cancer by actions on ER and also as chemical carcinogens, as a consequence of their oxidation leading to reactive metabolites. In this review we introduce our working hypothesis integrating the acetaldehyde and the oxidative stress effects with those involving increased estrogen levels. We also analyze potential preventive actions that might be accessible. There remains the fact that alcohol drinking is just one of the avoidable causes of breast cancer and that, at present, the suggested acceptable dose for prevention of this risk is of one drink per day.Fil: Castro, Gerardo Daniel.     Vortex shedding from tapered, triangular plates: taper and aspect ratio effects

    Further experiments on features of the vortex shedding from tapered flat plates normal to an airstream are described. The work extends that of Castro and Rogers (2002) and concentrates on the study of the effects of varying the spanwise aspect ratio for a fixed shape plate, by appropriate adjustment of end-plates, and of the nature of the shedding as the degree of taper becomes very large, so that the body is more like a triangular plate—e.g. an isosceles triangle—than a slightly tapered plate. With the taper ratio TR defined as the ratio of plate length to average cross-stream width, the paper concentrates on the range 0.58<TR<60. Reynolds numbers, based on the average plate width, exceed 104. It is confirmed that for a small enough taper ratio the geometrical three-dimensionality is sufficiently strong that all signs of periodic vortex shedding cease. For all other cases, however, the flow at different locations along the span can vary substantially, depending on taper. There appear to be at least four different regimes, each appropriate for a different range of taper ratio. These various regimes are described

    It is shown that the paper "Wave functions for a Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau particle in a time-dependent potential", by Merad and Bensaid [J. Math. Phys. 48, 073515 (2007)] is not correct in using inadvertently a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in a formalism that does require Hermitian Hamiltonians.Comment: 2 page

    Corroborating the equivalence between the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau and the Klein-Gordon and Proca equations

    It is shown that the Hamiltonian version of the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory with electromagnetic coupling brings about a source term at the current. It is also shown that such a source term disappears from the scenario if one uses the correct physical form for the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau field, regardless the choice for representing the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau matrices. This result is used to fix the ambiguity in the electromagnetic coupling in the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory. Moreover, some widespread misconceptions about the Hermiticity in the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory are discussed.Comment: 13 pages, to appears in Phys. Rev.

    Quasi-exactly-solvable confining solutions for spin-1 and spin-0 bosons in (1+1)-dimensions with a scalar linear potential

    We point out a misleading treatment in the recent literature regarding confining solutions for a scalar potential in the context of the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory. We further present the proper bound-state solutions in terms of the generalized Laguerre polynomials and show that the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions depend on the solutions of algebraic equations involving the potential parameter and the quantum number.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur

    On the bound-state spectrum of a nonrelativistic particle in the background of a short-ranged linear potential

    The nonrelativistic problem of a particle immersed in a triangular potential well, set forth by N.A. Rao and B.A. Kagali, is revised. It is shown that these researchers misunderstood the full meaning of the potential and obtained a wrong quantization condition. By exploring the space inversion symmetry, this work presents the correct solution to this problem with potential applications in electronics in a simple and transparent way
