In the first of a three-volume set published for Documenta IX, 11 authors contribute essays including: Zacharopoulos' examination of the Modern artist and the disparity between the notions of the institution and the individual; Tazzi's meditation on violence, beauty, and the artist-hero; and Castoriadis' reflections on the collapse of Marxism and the crisis of politics. With an introduction by curator Hoet, biographies on the artists, and notes on the supporting programme.
